Off-topic sorry, but has any of this put a hold on developments in/around Drake area such as soccer complex, ymca, hotel, etc.?  Haven't been in DSM in awhile and have no reason to go right now obviously to look.

Hotel is still under construction, but they are probably not in any hurry. Don't know anything about YMCA. Don't know if the soccer complex ever got approved. I assume it was put on hold.

I'm with McB, its hard to understand how a state with 4x the population only projects to have 2x as many deaths with the only discernable difference between the two states is that one took action quicker than the other.  How is that at all possible?

Plus it shows Illinois has passed their peak resource date and IA's peak is May 5th. CRAZY!

Fact is, I'm pretty sure I had hang overs worse than the Corona-virus back in the day. At some point, IMO, we must open everything back up. As I heard someone say, "...  trying to burn down the village to save it is foolish. That’s a cold, hard truth. Yes, we shut down, but the shutdown did not stop the spread of the virus. I wish it had. But it’s too late for that.”  Is it really too late? I'm all about a couple more weeks if that is going to make a big difference. After that, phick it, ... the elderly, those with immunity issues, and hot spots need to handled. I think that really is the cold hard truth.

By Mc Bulldog - 4/16/2020

That's fair, free country and all. I guess we'll agree to disagree.

College basketball is going to need the same mindset as you can hear in this interview. (Ben Carson interview)

Could schools have social distancing in the stands? I mean, based on Points, could Drake sell (Hypothetically) a maximum # of seats to a hierarchy of points or donors, every other row and separate the fans by 2 or 3 chairs? Hopefully, either this scumbag virus just goes away or they find a cure, but if not, I'd rather see half a normal crowd as opposed to none. Maybe a maximum of 4 - 6 seats per group, skip a row or 2, and put 2 or 3 empty seats between each group.
By Mc Bulldog - 5/12/2020

California sucks! How is 6 feet safe at Walmart but not a beach? Hope and pray this gets under control. If I had a son or daughter in college I'd put a kabosch on school this year. Not wort it. Unless they transfer to a school in South Dakota.

You should stick with basketball comments. You are a fool when it comes to contagious pandemics.

Why should you be a responsible citizen in our society you ask? Gosh thats a tough one. Why should we respect the safety and well being of our neighbors? I can't say. I suppose I could just start a huge bonfire in my back yard, and if the fire spreads to my neighbor its his problem, not mine.
I could rush to the grocery store, run four red lights and speed through every intersection. Collide with a school bus on the way? Not my problem, I have a right to drive my own car my own way to my own purpose. Your damn school kids aren't important.
Most educated adults have studied The Social Contract Theory somewhere along the way. Obviously you slept though this class. Your "right" to wave your fists end at my cheek, or so Roussoau said in the 18th Century. Our fear (Polls say about 80% of Americans) is the actions of a few selfish idiots will endanger the lives of all of us. We are on our way to over 135,000 deaths in a
America....and you blather about fear. Of course we are afraid, we see people dying faster than all of our wars and we should be afraid, and take preventative action.  You can speak and
write all you want about rights and freedoms, you don't have the right to infect me or my family. Stick to basketball.....you are a small minded and selfish little fool.

"You are a small minded and selfish little fool" is going a little overboard Coach.  You did realize that what McB posted was a quoted statement?
By zman - 4/15/2020

Insider that's a really good point.  It's one thing to test pro players and such as they are making hundreds of thousands of dollars.  It's another to send kids out there that aren't getting paid and risking it.  Vaccines just don't happen overnight.  I think we will be lucky to get the kids back on campus in the Fall.  Just my opinion.
By zman - 4/29/2020

Tons of just basic uncertainty for what lies ahead in the Fall, let alone the Winter bball season.  I tend to agree w/Bulldog 2233, not to be to political, but I'm also not sure at what point and how much our economy can actually take.  I also think colleges have incredibly tough decisions to make, and make soon.  I'm sure an insider on this board can tell us how much not having the relays will hurt us.  It's got to be big.  If schools don't open some won't make it, and possibly college as we know it won't ever be the same.  Online learning is not the same.  And if that is what is going to happen why would you continue to pay and what should you pay?  I already think there are a lot of high school Sr's who might take a semester or even a year off until things are settled.  I can't blame them.  I've got a son I'm hopefully sending back to school in California in August.  No idea what the future holds.  Tough time to be a school President.
By zman - 5/4/2020

I'm already hearing some D2 and some other smaller schools are saying their is a good chance they will close their doors if students don't come back in the Fall.  Can Drake survive an entire semester of nobody living on campus? I don't disagree that things could be rough again in the Fall, and dorm life certainly does not seem appealing, but not sure of the answer.  Are the professors going to be ok w/students quarantining themselves for 2 weeks if they test positive? How would you feel as a parent if it starts going around your kids floor at the dorm?  I think they are going to try it, but lots of tough decisions.
By zman - 5/4/2020

On a side note what does this to lower tier sports at schools and or D3 schools? Hard to see the Wartburgs and Northwestern's (IA) of the world making it out of this imo only so much money to go around as there is no way they have cash reserves to be paying everybody.

Exactly right.  The NCAA's path forward has to cover members from all divisions.  How many hundreds of schools is that?

The cost of putting a non-revenue sport in mothballs would be the coaches' salaries.  That's most of it, I think.

Wouldn't make any sense to formally cut a program, if the school wants to continue with it sometime down the road.  I don't care what Maxwell might have thought 20 years ago.

Robert Crumb?

It was Rousseau, Mr. Social Contract himself.

Robert Crumb would never say anything so ridiculous.  He knows the value of intellectual property.  In fact, I'd like to become his business partner. Unless a vaccine and testing becomes common place , I believe there will be no school and  no "sport" of any kind.

Some of the country's major sporting events like the Indy 500 have been moved to August and the Kentucky Derby to September. If they don't take place, would be another key indicator.

There is beginning to be a lot of information about employer duty of care and legal ramifications of known risks. Venue liability would have to be considered also. Insurance?
By musiccitybulldog - 4/29/2020

I noticed an NPR poll had a question if it was a good or bad idea to allow  large groups of people to attend sporting events. Over 91% said it was a bad idea.
85% thought it was a bad idea for kids to return to school.

With those thoughts present is there any chance of pro/college/high school sports until there is a vaccine?

Here is a link to the polls, caution there are political questions as well.     NPR poll.

The polls say 91% though it was a bad idea to allow large groups of people to attend sporting events "without further testing".  Testing is currently being ramped up all over the country.

Correct, I take that testing refers to anyone, rather than those who have health concerns.

I wonder what a timeframe is for deciding if school/online will take place,  or having Football would be?  June? July?

Lord, I hope we can still have a season. I hadn't even really considered, though I've been mildly concerned about football...

Probably comes down to establishing a date at which practices start being allowed, and then giving everybody about a month from that date...and then...maybe jumping right into conference season????
By SOSublime - 4/15/2020

I guess I forgot about the possibility of doing it with no fans. I still think there's no chance that sports come back. All of these players interacting would be too much of a risk, even if there were no fans. Also, like others said, we'll either still be doing this or be doing this again.
By SOSublime - 4/15/2020

I'd be interested to hear from those of you that think it will be business as usual, which seems to be the majority of people at the moment. Unless it's just as simple as, "it will be completely over by then." But I don't really see how that's a possibility. From what I've been reading we wont be back to normal for a long time. In the article Hammy posted on the Brodie thread, Fauci has an idea of how to proceed with pro sports but it involves testing players weekly and monitoring them closely. If there is a season and it's without fans, I'd be OK with paying a pretty substantial subscription fee to Drake to make up for lost revenue considering how much I usually spend at the Knapp throughout the season.
By SOSublime - 4/15/2020

zman - 4/15/2020
Insider that's a really good point.  It's one thing to test pro players and such as they are making hundreds of thousands of dollars.  It's another to send kids out there that aren't getting paid and risking it.  Vaccines just don't happen overnight.  I think we will be lucky to get the kids back on campus in the Fall.  Just my opinion.

Good points by both of you. I'll add to what zman said about vaccines, we won't have one anywhere near the start of basketball season.

By SOSublime - 4/16/2020

DUBulldog - 4/16/2020
Iowa’s peak is coming later than Illinois’ because the virus started spreading in Illinois a couple weeks before it hit Iowa.

The lockdown wasn’t specifically to STOP the spread of the virus; it’s too late for that. It was meant to SLOW the spread. Has it been effective at that? Nobody knows, because we don’t know how much worse it would have been without these measures. I’m thinking it’s helped at least somewhat.

Having said that, I’m not in favor of continuing it long term (and I’m in the “high risk” demographic)

What would you consider long-term? If we stop what we're currently doing too early, we're undo a lot of the good we've done by helping slow the spread. I'm not a big fan of doing it long term either but if it helps others who are high risk, I'm OK with the sacrifice. The problem is, we don't really know how long "long term" is at this point.

Also McBulldog, it's going to have to go a couple more weeks, especially if you consider the link you sent that I am too dumb to understand.

Also also, I mean, I guess we could open up the economy in the next few weeks but we'd wipe out 80% of Drake's fan base ;)
By SOSublime - 5/7/2020

The social distancing and all of the other measures being taken are to try not to overwhelm healthcare workers which would result in more deaths. It's not to stop people from getting it, just to slow the pace at which it spreads. Why is that so hard for some people to wrap their heads around?

The NCAA options link was something being discussed for a while pre-COVID-19. It’s mostly a standardization which sadly will allow more of the power leagues to move to 20 game conference schedules at the expense of games against mid-majors.

I think the next few weeks are critical. Iowa has said they plan to open summer football on June 1. However you slice it, the most important thing is there has to be students back on campus to hold anything. Getting students back on campus brings tremendous challenges.

The leading experts are expecting social distancing to have to continue to at least some degree until a vaccine is available. The absolute earliest we could even start to see a vaccine is September, and that’s if we get lucky. I don’t see a way you can have students back on campus and social distance. Dorm life simply won’t allow for it.

I’ve spoken with a lot of teachers and a couple professors. The virtual e-learning thing simply doesn’t work for most people. If people wanted to do online class or could stand it there were already plenty of options for that. Their decision to choose in person classes for a lot more money over online has been validated nothing more.

Barring a breakthrough treatment (remdesivir is a start but by no means good enough), the virus suddenly completely dying out for no reason at all, or something else that makes social distancing no longer necessary, right now my money is on the entire fall semester being cancelled at all levels. I think we’ll have the vaccine by the end of the year and be comfortable enough to resume classes for the spring semester. When that happens, I think you see a conference basketball season. I would like to see the NCAA tournament is both conference champs and tournament champs with limited at-larges where spots open because the same team won both to make up for lack of “resume chances” but something tells me the power conferences won’t let that happen.

Decisions will be held out until late July because of the revenue involved. I think you would see a conference only spring football season with limited bowl games played as well simply because of revenue.
By Bulldog2323 - 5/7/2020

A number of schools, including Iowa, are planning to start College Football practice June 1. Growing sense is let it happen and use this as a test to see how it goes. I don't think anyone is expecting this fall to look exactly like last fall but if things go well this summer we'll at minimum have students on campus and games happening. If every player is in the ICU by July 1 then well I don't think I need to say anything more.

If the MVC follows suit, Drake Night could be a casualty of COVID-19.
By Bulldog2323 - 4/18/2020

My opinion, and this is going to get far more political than I would normally get on this board:

The White House announced the three stages. Everyone is in stage 1 right now. I believe every state led by a Republican Governor will be on Stage 2 by May 15, the rest by May 30. I think every state will be onto Stage 3 with no or limited government restrictions by July 1.

Is this the right path? No. People already have and will continue to die due to arrogance, "for the economy," incompetence, and refusal to accept facts. I don't like it but I think that's what's going to happen.

I think you will see sports but I don't think attendance will come anywhere close to a sell out anywhere until there's a vaccine or effective treatment in place. As it relates to Drake, attendances of less than 1,000 will be normal. It will be interesting to see how enrollment swings and how many people actually come back to campus in the fall. My guess is barring a vaccine/treatment a sizable number of students don't come back in the fall.

If I was a betting man I'd go all in on nothing happening until there is a vaccine.  In addition,  I think many state gov and AD's (not that they have same power) will ultimately decide with how they want to precede.  A team like Syracuse could just refuse it's participation in this year's sports since they are close to epicenter where as a state like Mississippi or Alabama is hell bent on watching 18 year-olds running with a ball for entertainment and do not care about the ramifications.  Either way you look at it if we allow sports with fans with fans right now imo way too risky and if anyone gets sick and it will be PR disaster 10x.  How can you rationalize a team like Clemson playing football for no money in order for TV providers to make money.  If I'm athletes I protests if you are made to play.  Positive note if gov decides to "bailout colleges" hopefully Drake invests in Knapp center even more.

Your analogy of burning down a village to save it is awful.  Maybe worse than Kale Abrahamson's attitude while at Drake.  We are not setting fire to the United States we are simply limiting social contact in one of the most transmittable diseases of the last 80 years.  Also by saying "phick it" really is not a pro-life stance if we are putting money for sports team owners ahead of the health of United States citizens. But like they say to each their own.

Edit: I hope I'm wrong and this does "magically" go away

Yep, as Drakey said, the hotel is currently still under construction.  They have never stopped work on it.  The exterior is nearly complete, no clue about the interior.

No clue what YMCA you're asking about.  I follow development in Des Moines very closely, and I've never heard of a YMCA planned anywhere near Drake.

I also don't think the soccer stadium ever got officially approved by Des Moines school board.

Sorry meant Boys and Girls Club (pretty sure?, right across from Shivers?)

Would you rather have a completely cancelled college basketball season next year and it guarantees Niko has less than 5 wins in the next full season or
Full season next year, but Niko wins 30 games and is dark horse final four contender?

In the Darnell Brodie thread on the recruiting board, one of our posters mentioned the possibility of their being no college basketball this coming season.  While I think this is very valid discussion, I don't want that recruit's thread to go completely off topic, so I'll set this up here for discussion.

What are your thoughts about whether or not there will be college basketball in 2020-21?

Iowa’s peak is coming later than Illinois’ because the virus started spreading in Illinois a couple weeks before it hit Iowa.

The lockdown wasn’t specifically to STOP the spread of the virus; it’s too late for that. It was meant to SLOW the spread. Has it been effective at that? Nobody knows, because we don’t know how much worse it would have been without these measures. I’m thinking it’s helped at least somewhat.

Having said that, I’m not in favor of continuing it long term (and I’m in the “high risk” demographic)

Off-topic sorry, but has any of this put a hold on developments in/around Drake area such as soccer complex, ymca, hotel, etc.?  Haven't been in DSM in awhile and have no reason to go right now obviously to look.

I found McBulldog’s use of tinfoil hat in his post rather ironic.

Consider this thread closed. People have had their say, but I think we’ve all seen enough. Please don’t take political discussions to other threads
