The competition is North Dakota, South Dakota, UNO and Dartmouth. You'd have to think we'd be the frontrunner out of those.

Because we absolutely would be if it weren't for Sandy.

You hit it. "Would be ". We're not a better program than any of those schools except Dartmouth, and of course he gets his Ivy education with them.

I'm not someone who is unrealistic about Drake's position on the college basketball landscape. We've been terrible forever. But I would still rank Drake above all of those schools. Drake plays in a better conference than all four schools. Des Moines is also a much better place to live than Vermillion, Hanover or Grand Forks. Omaha is probably a tossup depending on your preference. Drake's academics are much better than 3 of the 4 and our practice facilities are the best of the bunch from what I've seen. I think recruits will see Drake for what it is, a better school in a better conference that has been down for a long time. It's up to Niko to convince them that he's going to change that.

I think we give to much credit to Des Moines and it being a nice place to live. By that, I mean most 18 year old basketball players are looking at where they can get playing time, how good is the program and is it going to get me to the league. Even kids at the Valley level and other mid major levels truly all think they are going to play in the league. Yes, Des Moines is a much better place to be than South or North Dakota. My point is the majority of these kids really don't care. They are coming to play basketball.

I do think they might consider that Des Moines is much more accessible to their likely hometowns than Dakota Schools. I also think that the fact that Des Moines is kind of a cool city does help.

Based on my experience with recent recruits, Des Moines the city doesn't really factor into their own decision, but to their parents it matters. I gave tours of campus to almost a dozen prospects and their families during the Giacoletti era and I think only one player asked about the city while almost every parent does. It's a small sample size and clearly not every kid has the same decision-making process, but they cared much more about the campus atmosphere, how the other students got along with the team, and the fact that they play almost every game streaming on ESPN really seemed to peak their interest. I of course didn't mention that not many people actually stream the game, but they liked the thought of exposure on ESPN3.
Just my two cents.

Committed to South Dakota......I don't think Drake was actively recruiting him anymore.

Griesel is reopening his recruiting: Drake head coach Darian DeVries was the first to get an in-person visit with 2018 Lincoln East F Sam Griesel late this afternoon. Griesel reopened his recruitment from South Dakota early today. Story
