Opener will now be at defending FCS champ North Dakota State. October games against Marist and Davidson will be the only chances to see Drake at home before Halloween. https://www.newsrepublican.com/news/20200608/naia-releases-fall-sports-plans

If Drake wants to replace that game, they could schedule another similarly affected program for Labor Day weekend. A partial list of FCS teams seeking to replace canceled (Sept 3rd/Sept 5th) games v. a D-II or NAIA: Stetson, North Carolina A&T, Kenessaw State, and East Tennessee State. Playing Stetson as the opener would mean sacrificing Stetson as the season finale (11/21). Drake would either need to find someone else for Nov 21st, or finish a 10-game season at home v. Butler in mid-November.

Looks like Week 1 game is not completely scratched... let’s hope they find a game!

I think they could play Stetson twice this year, if that's mutually agreeable. Drake was going to pay Hastings something...maybe enough $ to meet Stetson more than halfway on the cost of a DSM trip? Only the November game in Florida would count in the league standings. Stetson Coach Roger Hughes, a.k.a. Mr. Midwest

Not a fan of playing a conference team, twice, if they can find another option which there seems to be other teams with open dates. Drake football is ready to show what it’s made of the next few years!! Go Dawgs!!

FCS teams are being allowed about six weeks to prepare for their first game. Practice may start on July 13th if Drake schedules a replacement game for Sept 5th. Otherwise, they wait...

Central Connecticut wants a game 9/19. Unlikely Drake will schedule them, but it shows that while Drake may not be able to find a game for Labor Day weekend, there may be a way for D to get an 11th game back on the schedule. CCSU became available when Valpo dropped them. Things like this happen unexpectedly.

Another possibility, abeit unlikely, is Stony Brook (NY). Stony Brook--in the Colonial for football--has nothing scheduled for Labor Day weekend. Today, the Patriot League said none of its teams may play a game before September 4th. You can figure out the rest of the story by looking at the following Fordham schedule...Fordham football is in the Patriot League. https://fordhamsports.com/sports/football/schedule

(D-II) Urbana has closed its doors, yet the football team's 2020 schedule is still online. They scheduled Gannon for Labor Day weekend. Guess that's why Rus mentioned Gannon in the other thread?

For what it's worth, St. Thomas has yet to post a schedule. The Toms will soon be in the PFL, so I see them as the ideal replacement opponent. If St. Thomas already has a D-III game scheduled for that weekend...or if they already have the D-III limit of 10 games lined up...they should f-ing drop someone. Make room for Daddy.

I heard a rumour the match has been scheduled with a school in South Dakota but I'll leave it to D or others to confirm.

With this post, I will reach my limit on wild speculation... Augie has an open date that weekend... Edit: NSIC teams apparently are prohibited from playing before September 12th this year. ...leaving Black Hills State as the most likely candidate. Like Drake, they had an NAIA game scheduled for 9/3.

Not speculating on how Drake fills its vacancy, but... More cancellations mean lots of possibilities are opening up for schools that actually want a game in early September. SEMO, mentioned in another thread, is looking to replace Dayton. The Flyers somehow don't think they can have players COVID tested until the official start of camp. Given that results are not instantaneous...and they won't start football until all results are in...this will push back their actual preseason work. Consequently, they don't think they'll be ready to play until 9/12. I assume that SEMO would be a one off, paycheck game for Drake. If Drake could live with a D-III opponent, it looks like Rockford is one of many possibilities. They were scheduled to open against Grinnell on September 5th, but Grinnell has canceled its football season. After the college bagged most of the 2019 football season, this has to be especially tough on the Grinnell players.

Alternative method to getting an 11th game back on the schedule...Let's call it The Death March. It goes like this: Do not replace the Sept 3rd game. Opener would be at North Dakota State on Sept 12th. Do not have an open date (Sept 19th) in between trips to North Dakota State and Dixie State. Instead...make another trip! If the Ivy League cancels its non-league games (decision to be announced July 8th), there will be a number of potential paycheck opponents looking for a replacement game. Probably no one paying $200k, but maybe someone would pay more than enough to cover Drake's travel expenses. Possibilities would include Georgetown, Bryant, VMI, Holy Cross, Lehigh, and Bucknell. * All of them potentially dumped by the Ivies. Note that Patriot League teams are not allowed to fly to nonconference games this fall. But maybe Bryant (Northeast Conference) could be a home game... With so much uncertainty this year, Drake shouldn't worry too much about scheduling its way to a winning record. You only live once. * also see previous post re: Central Ct State.

I understand that the D-II school near me, William Jewell, was supposed to be Black Hills' home opening opponent. Drake apparently offered Black Hills enough of a guarantee to persuade them to swap out WJC for the Bulldogs.
