+x+xWeek 2: Sara Rhine, Player of the Week I just wondered if a player could win 6th player of the year and player of the year ,the same year? Nothing should prevent it. POY could also be defensive player of the year. No rules against it, but I wonder if voters may be reluctant to vote that way. Also, it is a long season. Hitner has garnered a lot of attention from defenses in the preseason, when we get to MVC play there won't be any surprising teams and everyone will be focusing more on Sara and Becca. Most teams will be better this year than last, so it will be tougher.

Not a "weekly" honor but: Senior Sammie Bachrodt has been selected as a candidate for the 2018-19 Senior CLASS award. Bachrodt is one of sixty NCAA® men's and women's basketball student-athletes who excel both on-and-off the court and were selected as candidates for the prestigious award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. The men's and women's candidates will be narrowed to two fields of 10 finalists in February, and those names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one male candidate and one female candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four C's of community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the 2019 NCAA Men's Final Four® and NCAA Women's Final Four® this spring. If I recall correctly, Lizzy Wendell was a finalist for the same award two years ago.

Sara Rhine wins sixth player of the week award. The six awards rank tied for second all-time in Valley history for a single season with Drake's Rachael Hackbarth (2011-12). Also, Becca Jonas has been selected for WBCA “So You Want To Be A Coach Program” Jonas is one of 60 women’s basketball players from across the country selected to take part in the 17th annual “So You Want To Be A Coach” program. Jonas will participate in a three-day workshop put on by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) in partnership with WeCOACH April 3-5 in Tampa Bay, Fla during the 2019 NCAA Women’s Basketball Final Four.

Plenty of weekly honors in the future for Drake recruit, 6"3" Maggie Bair. Just named A.P FIRST TEAM ALL-STATE (one of five) in class 3-A (second largest, but a fine line between 3A and 4A.... in boys, also).
She is also all region and special mention all-state in volleyball.

Here you go, article on semi-final game (13 pts and 16 rebounds) https://basketball.dailyherald.com/sports/20190301/glenbard-south-earns-spot-in-state-championship-gameAlso: Maggie Bair: When Maggie first stepped on the court for Glenbard South High School’s varsity basketball team as a freshman in 2015, it was immediately clear that she was special. The forward scored 15 points and pulled down 20 rebounds in one of the first games of her high school career, and she went on to average over 10 PPG and an areabest 11.5 RPG that season. Maggie was even better as a sophomore, putting up 13 PPG and 12 RPG before flaunting her versatility by winning Illinois’ “Queen of the Hill” state three-point competition in the spring of 2017. However, the action surrounding Maggie’s recruitment during her first two years of high school did not reflect either the skill or potential Bair showcased on the court. It wasn’t until the summer of 2017 that Maggie, while playing up a year with Mercury Elite 17U Ralston on the travel circuit, began to receive serious attention from college coaches. The momentum began with a full scholarship offer from division two Saginaw Valley State University, a school that has had recent success recruiting players in the western suburbs of Chicago. A few weeks later, division one Youngstown State offered Maggie a scholarship while hosting her family on an unofficial campus visit. Though several other programs began recruiting Maggie hard by the end of the summer, her recruitment took a backseat to her all-state volleyball campaign in the fall of 2017. During this time, she visited only one school, and she scheduled that visit because the school’s proximity to her home minimized the strain that the visit placed on her in-season schedule. That school was Drake University. On that early-November visit, Maggie and her family fell in love with Drake. Her final commitment did not ultimately come until a month and a half later, but during that period of time, Drake’s coaching staff only further emphasized their interest in Maggie. “The coaches made me feel so wanted”, said Bair after announcing her commitment. “They made me feel like a part of a family”. Even though it will be nearly two years before Maggie puts on a Drake uniform, she is confident that now was the right time to make her commitment. “I knew that Drake was the perfect fit, so what was the point of waiting any longer?”. With Maggie’s commitment, all three of the Bair siblings will be college athletes. Her oldest brother, Billy, plays football for Illinois State, while older brother Charlie is a freshman basketball player at Illinois Wesleyan.

6 points in a 35-21 loss in the state championship game. Pulled down 5 rebounds. Looks to be a great get for the Lady Bulldogs. Amazingly, her team was not ranked this year, even though they made it to a third place finish last year.

Will be interesting to see who makes he All MVC team. Clearly Drake should have 3 players on the team with MSU, Northern Iowa, Bradley and ILSU all having at least an argument for having two on the team. Add Nicole Martin and maybe O'Connor and one has to wonder if some deserving players on the top 5 teams will get squeezed off the 11 person team And will the voters mindlessly put a player such as Willard on the team just because somehow she was on it last year. Rhine and Hittner will clearly be 1 and 2 in the POY. I suspect Harper will be Coach of the Year.
