I am giving him an A based on nothing more than him wanting to be here which means he won't have one foot out the door when he begins. Of course, now I am really interested in the assistants he hires and if he can salvage a recruiting class.

He does come from a winning program- goof background. You would also have to assume he has alot of recruiting contacts and inroads.

I gave it a B. In comparison, I gave the Niko hire an A last year.

Gave an A+ ... at least Drakey didn't give the hire an F. When Phelps was hired, I did not want DeVries, in retrospect I think my anger toward Creighton blurred my vision.

I went with B. We probably won’t know true grade until year three. Solid hire, but no splash.

I went with B but I couldn’t tell you why.

I am trying really hard not to be that negative, but still I can't help but think we've gone with a model that has been an abject failure at Drake (hiring a long-time assistant). This time could be different and I certainly hope it is. I'll be cheering him on heartily. Still, I have to give this hire a "C". Could turn out to be an A+, but we'll only know that after a while.

I understand the hesitancy to be excited because of how this song and dance (hiring long-time asst.) has gone for us in the past, but I think it is important to recognize the key difference between now and previous hires: the AD and President's support of basketball. I think it's fair to say one of the biggest hurdles for a first-time head coach is adapting to the new role with a new staff, but for the first time in a while I think we should be confident in the efforts of the AD's office and administration to help and support D-Rock (I'm a fan of the nickname but I do think he needs a new one from us) in the transition into head coaching. I gotta imagine he has to be in a better spot than the past hires simply because of the support he will have from an administration that isn't trying to make us D3. Obviously, none of us know if he will pan out to be the successful coach we need, but I think the deck is stacked more in his favor than past hires of coaches with similar backgrounds has been.

PeeWee was an assistant coach five years ago. Every good head coach was an assistant. It's silly to bash a guy simply because he was an assistant. DD was an assistant who recruited NBA quality players. He's been tutored by two very successful coaches at a school 120 miles away. I'd say he's got considerably more going for him.self than any of the previous assistants. It just doesn't make sense that you would want Thorson over DevVriews other than to try to retain the recruits...which is a good reason I guess.
Moving forward.....

I actually gave him a B based on his press conference. I do think he will be totally invested in the job and not looking for his next bigger paycheck. That should help with recruiting.

I was very impressed by DD. He's a man with a plan and has sincerity when it comes to his desire to be the Drake coach. I'm expecting good things.

On the surface this isn't an exciting hire but after reading up and hearing what he had to say I think it's a great one given the circumstances. Time will tell how good this really was, but I'm more optimistic now than I was a week ago.

Wouldn't it be fun if Darian is wildly successful, making SHC look even worse for skipping over the guy multiple times? Just to really hammer it home, yknow.
