Local guys - what can you tell us about Garrett Sturtz over at Newton? I saw a tweet the other day about him averaging 40+ points over his last few games. He doesn't have a Verbal Commits profile and all articles on him are from fall of 2017. I'd imagine the Drake coaches are aware of him as he played with Connor Gholson at Newton. This article from Nov. (trigger warning it's the DMR) mentioned Drake and Albany are monitoring him. https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/sports/high-school/recruiting/2017/11/03/these-iowa-2018-basketball-prospects-could-become-ncaa-division-one-recruits/821621001/
I wouldn't think there's a scholarship for him with the 7 signed recruits unfortunately, but he could be a late find. Here is video of one of his 56 point games: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJlKB2bBuN4

+xReminds me of a short Ben Simons +1 DT, ya prack. I was going to post the same thing. The first thing is his shooting form and how he releases the ball. The other, he kinda looks like Ben.

Wherever he ends up, let's hope they run the play Phelps ran for Ben when he'd just run figure 8's around screens until he was finally open.

I know that the coaching staff is aware of him. He has attended multiple Drake games this year.

If it drove you crazy, can you imagine how Ben felt as it drove him to utter fatigue and mono? Was that his junior or his senior year....I forgot. How much time did he miss?

Hard to tell if a guy like that can play in college. Doesn't look very tall or very quick, but maybe he's a guy who can adapt.

Watched 2 games of his. Strikes me as similar to Chris Caird or Kale Abrahamson type at the college level. Not what we’re looking for IMO

We've got 7 new dudes next year, I have no idea what type of player we're looking for lol. You wouldn't hear me complain about signing a local kid who filled it up in HS

Saw he scored like 54 of his teams 63 points in the substate game or something against Indianola. And he's played for the Iowa Barnstormers who have been pretty successful on a national basis on the AAU circuit. Just doesn't seem super athletic to play the shooting guard at this level, but damn, averaging over 40 a night is still saying something, especially when it sounds like he was pretty much the entire team.

Schlatter was a member of the barnstormers AAU so there could be a connection there.

null I agree - just wouldn’t want a schollie used on him. (Moot point I know since class is full).

He does have a really smooth shot. I think one game he had 9 points in 45 seconds or something like that.

Sturtz can flat out play and he has a motor. Kids like this deserve a shot. It will be open competition for playing time next year. The more players in the mix the better we might find a diamond!

We’re still assuming walk on, right? Obviously no departures announced yet.
