the women opened their exhibition season with a 3-1 victory over Northern Illinois tonight. They have their second exhibition at home against Minnesota Saturday before opening on the road at North Dakota State August 19.
the men start their exhibition season with Bellevue Sunday and then host Eastern Illinois next Wednesday. they play their first five regular season games on the road, nine of their first eleven.

The university never bothered to release its signing class for men's soccer. I'm looking at the roster, and it's interesting how foreign the new players are.
Former coach Holmes was Swiss-Canadian. Current coach is Scottish. Under Holmes, Drake didn't have a ton of foreign players (college soccer is loaded with them). A few Canadians (including their current GK). Their best player last year, Wypych, is New Zealander, although he was a transfer from New Mexico.
2016 recruits include a guy from Tijuana, a guy from Iceland, a South African (via Minnesota), and a Scot. Also a Finnish transfer from a D2 school and another New Zealander transfer from Green Bay. Also a German listed as a senior who near as I can tell was with UMKC at one point.
Some usuals- Indiana, KC, and Iowa City- but definitely a foreign flavor.

Men's soccer team forfeited their victory over Green Bay earlier this week. Apparently, used an ineligible player. Coach will be suspended for next 4 games linkPretty bad when the coach doesn't know the rules.

So, first a football coach that schedules too many games, and now this. Well, that's baseball.
But, at least I got some awesome news the other day. I received a "Save the Date" card from a place called Drake University. It said there is a 50 year reunion for my class on Relays Weekend!!
50 years???!!!!???? SAY WHAAAAATT????!!!!???? HOLY CRAP!!!!!

That's just so Drake in a nutshell. I actually went to the game last Saturday night at UMKC. They have a very nice on site stadium with probably a few hundred chair backs seats plus another few hundred bleacher seats. I wish 20-25 years ago Drake would have had the foresight to build something like this on campus.

The signing class not being released is typical given the lack of transparency shown since Sean Holmes was fired.
Does anybody know why it happened definitively? No. Has our AD spoken about why such a drastic change was made the day of the first game? No. Has Gareth reached out to alumni since taking the position? No.
The program is clouded in secrecy and for me, as a former four year player, doesn't pass the sniff test. Given that Gareth doesn't know the rules and for the first time in Drake history actually lost a game single handedly due to a coach not knowing the rules I'm a huge skeptic. Also seeing as he has another full time job while being the main man makes me think nobody involved except the players take our program seriously.
That is sad and needs to change.

Waaaaaaaait, hold up, what's his second full time job in addition to being head coach? A side job is one thing, but another full time job means the head coaching gig pay is ridiculously low or he doesn't take the position as seriously as he should. Neither being good things.

chris, I'm confused by the whole roster thing. As a former player, maybe you can explain it better. It seems on every roster, not just Drake's, there is a huge revolving door of players every year. Is there a reason why we have so many players? I know 16-17 guys play in a game, but don't we have like almost 40 guys on the roster? How many of them are getting money? Seems like we have a huge amount of players transferring in and out every year. Just curious.

Turnover is pretty common when you have big numbers. What is abnormal is a veteran group (12 seniors) going from the second round of the NCAA tournament one year to being 3 games against Bradley away from a 3 win season. That leads to questions. Drake is currently being plagued by poor leadership.

Former GK Darrin MacLeod is with Swope Park Rangers for the preseason. They're the reserve team of MLS's Sporting Kansas City. They promoted some guys to the senior team last year, tougher spot though because they already have a rookie GK that they drafted from Rutgers.

MacLeod got re-signed for 2018. He played five games last season. The other rookie GK played in three. Most of the reserve team minutes went to the guy who is currently the third-string GK for the first team. That will probably be the case again next year, unless MacLeod can beat him out enough to be considered a #3 option for Sporting KC.
