Travel Channel's Man v Food recently visited Des Moines, and the show is to air on October 6. The places he visited were High Life Lounge, Jethro's and Black Market Pizza in Ankeny. The "challenge" was the Adam Emmenecker sandwich at Jethro's. It's possible that there might be a Drake mention.....not sure how they could do the Emmenecker sandwich without explaining who he is.

I went to High Life Lounge for the first time about 2 weeks ago ... had bacon wrapped tater tots, onion rings, fried cheese curds, and bacon wrapped little smokies. I really don't think my digestive system will ever recover. I'd rather have a testicle mashed in a vice and chopped off with a rusty can lid than endure that rath from Satan again.

Works for me.

He said Satan's "rath", not wrath. To quote a highly reliable source, the definition of "rath" "again according to Humpty, is a sort of green pig." I don't know what Satan's green pig did to McBull, but given the visual from his post, we unfortunately all know which body part(s) it involved.

See now if he had been eating Chinese food I would would have understood considering the alternate spelling for rat, is also rath, but McB didn't mention egg rolls or crab rangoon. Although I do think there used to be an animal shelter near the high life. Green pig? Really?

Two of the others who were with me had the same situation. Whatever, I'm not eating there anymore. I can go to the West End and order from across the street and get better service, better food, with better clientele for half the price.

I've only eaten once at High Life....all I remember is that it was dirt cheap. 2 couples, and our total bill was about $20, including tip. It was kind of like eating a school lunch, but I think that's the idea. Definitely a strange place for Man v Food to hit in Des Moines. I don't think the places they picked are the places that most Des Moines residents would suggest for a show about pigging out on good food. The place in Ankeny that they visited was virtually unknown, even to people who lived in Ankeny. They've only been open about a year, and they're closing before the show will even air. link

That makes sense, I take it you were buying? :P Each of you had the grilled cheese and a Shasta because the beer is $2.50 for a tap and $3.00 for a bottle. - Menu Link

I think most of the sandwiches back then were about $2-3 (sloppy joe, cheeseburger, fish sticks, etc). I don't know if the menu has changed since then....haven't been back. What places do you think Man v Food should have hit in Des Moines. I think they should have done a breakfast at the Waveland. Tasty Taco's is a local legend. Someplace like George the Chili King or Smitty's which have been around for 50 years. I don't think that High Life Lounge or Black Market Pizza would have been real high on a list of suggestions from Des Moines natives.

For the stuff the guy in the show is looking for, the only thing around here is the Iowa State Fair and a restaurant northwest of Marshalltown called, "That Place". It's outside Conrad, IA and we go there once a year. The food is better than 801 at about 1/4 the cost. Nice article on the place ... eerrr ... I mean, That Place. - linkAnyone ever go to Scarpino's in Cumming years ago? That place (no, not that place but this place) was unique.

I watch Man v Food all the time.....I think Rube's or Iowa Beef Steakhouse would have been perfect for the show.

How about the Asian Pizza place on 4th St off of Court Ave.? What's it called, Fong Pizza? Or how about A Dong? I've had business associates in town before and their joke was, "Hey, what did you have for lunch today?", "Oh, I had A Dong." :P

I went to Fongs when I was last in town to drop off Jeff at Drake. I am a unrepentent Chicago pizza snob (I prefer very thin) and I like Fongs! Des Moines has sure grown up since 1983!

Adam Richman failed at the Adam Emmenecker Challenge. Both AE and Heemskerk got some face time on the episode.
