Hard to argue with the logic of the hire. I don’t know ****, but I like the move.

ESPN called him one of the 30 coaches who will define the next decade of CFB as one of the “next DeBoers”
30. Joe Woodley, Grand View Vikings. It wouldn't be a next DeBoers list without an NAIA guy, right? While there are quite a few with similar credentials, and reigning national champ Doug Socha of Keiser University just took the job at Division II Lenoir-Rhyne, we'll go with McCarty. The former Iowa State captain helped his father, Mike, build the Grand View program from scratch and has gone an incredible 58-5 in five seasons since taking over. He hasn't snared a national title yet, but it's only a matter of time. He might know more about the program-building experience than anyone in college football, and he has a degree from an FBS school on his wall. Good combo.

The former Iowa State captain... Oops. It's good to know that someone writing for ESPN knows the name Morningside's head coach, but c'mon guys... Lol I noticed that, too; but I also know that Morningside's coach is named Ryan while Northwestern's is McCarty. 😂

Hardin said on X he had known Woodley for a long time.
Grand View won the NAIA championship on Saturday, have to think this was a done deal before that.
I'm sure Hardin and others at Drake were annoyed at how the local media called Grand View "Des Moines U" directly countering Drake's Des Moines' Hometown Team campaign.

Hardin graduated from Valley in 1998. Woodley graduated from Valley in 1999. Both families had Drake connections prior to being hired by Drake. Women's soccer coach Lindsey Horner also graduated from Valley in that era in 1997.

+xDoes his QB have another year of eligibility remaining? NAIA player of the year Jackson Waring has been a college player for five years (Illinois State & Grand View), but with a COVID year, maybe he has another season. He is already working on a Masters in Organizational Leadership at GV. Perhaps this is similar to Drake's MS in Leadership. At any rate, he's going to be in school a little longer. He could possibly stretch things through the Fall '25 semester. Whether or not Waring becomes a Bulldog, I can see a few Grand View players coming to Drake. Financial aid will be important.

p.s. Considering the Pavia injunction, the NCAA might not be in a good position to count years played outside the NCAA toward NCAA eligibility. So maybe GV players have all the Drake eligibility they could ask for.

Looks like a really smart hire. I'm surprised he made the move, but I suppose better chance of advancement from Drake.

Seems like a great hire all things considered. He is obviously very familiar with the community, the University, its facilities, and his football acumen/success speaks for itself.

Not sure how the NCAA age limit plays into it, but Jackson Waring has one year of eligibility left... 2020 (Illinois St): redshirt, 1 game played (covid year, under 4 game redshirt limit) 2021 (Illinois St): 9 games played 2022 (Illinois St): redshirt 2023 (Grand View): 12 games played 2024 (Grand View): 14 games played
