I'm a new member of Drake Nation, thanks for accepting me and for providing insight that Bulldogs basketball doesn't receive from the local newspaper. I noticed the Register doesn't even bother to post game wraps from road games on its mobile application. You're better off finding a story on the website tied to the opponent's paper. That was the case after the Illinois State (Bloomington Pantagraph) and SIU (Southern Illinoisan) games. Thanks Gannett.

Sadly, so true. I go to the away location papers to read what happened on road games.

If there is a game wrap on the Register’s website, it’s usually 1-2 paragraphs from the AP game story.

It’s been a lot of years since they’ve sent a reporter on the road with the ‘dogs. There have actually been home games that weren’t covered by the hometown paper.

Less and less in the paper, and price has been going up exponentially. Over $800 for a one year subscription to the physical version of the paper.

Sports section is all Iowa and Iowa State all the time.

To keep up with what’s going on, I’d recommend social media and this message board.

At the Register’s peak, they had 640 reporters in their news room. Keep in mind, at the peak, there were two papers,
the morning Register, and the afternoon edition, the Tribune. So, now there are 60 reporters in the news room, if my math is
correct, that’s a 91% reduction in news staff. If you wonder why the drop in coverage, there’s the reason imo.
Way to go Register! Keep up the good work.

The Register has a new person covering home games that used to cover recruiting. Every story lede starts with who won the opening tip and who scored the first basket. It’s embarrassing. Matthew Bain did a pretty good job last season; wish he was still on the Drake beat.

I remember when the Register alone posted five statewide editions in the early 1970s. Obviously, things change and print journalism is pretty much dead in the water.

Any news in the print edition is two days old anyway. they don't even try to cover anything past noon. They have dropped the Saturday print edition as of last week. I guess the positive is that if nobody reads it, our lack of coverage is not as noticeable.

Mark Emmert did a helluva job covering Drake MBB. I forget when his last year was; maybe around the end of the Phelps era, it hasn't been the same since.

She actually started recruiting coverage at the same time as she started covering Drake for the Register....she was hired to replace Matthew Bain, who previously covered both.

You're absolutely right though, her game stories are embarrassingly bad.  They read like a high school kid had written them.

Matthew Bain is leaving the Register.

Looks like he’s going to work for a casino or a sports book.

I wonder if the Register will even replace him or just continue to shrink the staff even further.

As of now they have an opening for a deputy sports editor position. The job description leads with a focus on high school sports and makes mention of Big Ten & Big 12 conference coverage.

It's all about clicks and metrics. The day that the Register writing a Drake story leads to 1,000 digital subscriptions is the day the Register will have a dedicated Drake reporter again. Until that time.......

If there was a good pre game preview and post game article, an article done on on each player, maybe some recruiting news, and articles talking-messaging to the coach-coaching staff once a week. I would subscribe during the season, forget to cancel and then they would have me locked in year long.
