Timing seems really odd. Kills recruiting for this year. When will new coach be announced? Seems like their only option will be to hit the transfer portal (though that is happening lots of times to lots of programs).

Like you said, when the new coach will be announced sets the timing for everything else. That said, if you know this is it I like being honest and forthcoming with everyone about it.
