A PFL school has started with Morehead State losing 52-0 to James Madison.

JMU is the peeseason #4 in FCS, so maybe a blowout was not unexpected.  Still, I don't think Morehead came ready to play.  Their best defensive linemen did not play...don't know the story, maybe they're saving them for later.  Is Rick Fox now in charge at Morehead State?

Elsewhere, Davidson is leading #21 Elon 23-18, in the 4th.  The Wildcats lost their leading rusher and their top linebacker via transfer, but that option is hard to defend
And they convert a lot of 4th downs.

Davidson couldn't hang on.  They lost 26-23.

Has anyone looked at the schedules, and formed an opinion about the order of finish this spring?

San Diego, of course, is the favorite.

Morehead looks promising on paper, but laid an egg in the opener...their big man on the D-Line, Vaughn Taylor, did not play.  Likewise, they're slow to get other FBS transfers who could help the defense onto the field. Seems they have coaching issues.  But they don't play USD this spring, so the ugly loss to James Madison could end up being forgotten.  They're not playing Drake, either.  Who do they play twice?  Butler.

Davidson will have to wait at least a few more months to break its nine-game losing streak against Marist.  However, based on last weekend, they look good for a few wins this spring.  The Wildcats aren't playing Drake.

Where will our Bulldogs finish?  Given that they play Valpo twice, it depends a lot on how good the Brown and Gold are this spring.  They have a FBS transfer running back named Robert Washington (not to be confused with the former Dayton Flyer).  He once turned down a scholarship offer from Alabama to play near home - Charlotte -and later transferred to Old Dominion.  Washington can run angry, like McBulldog hopped up on goofballs.  Could be trouble, if he actually plays.  On the other hand, if he's a phantom dude on the roster (see Cam Thomas, JU 2019), Drake may have a fairly easy schedule.  I don't see DU as a title contender.

Newcomer Presbyterian has about a dozen scholarship players, and should be in the second tier with Davidson and Stetson.  Butler will probably finish at or near the bottom.

What say you?

Clearly Week 1 will tell a lot... Drake vs USD will give us a look at how well the depleted O Line (Drake) will be this season.  Davidson vs Stetson will be another to keep an eye on. I think we will have a much better idea of how these teams are coming along and what if any adjustments have been made giving 5th years not back in spring, or those who may have opted out, etc

All of this has the feel of spring football (the kind teams have in normal years).  Yes, someone will get a trophy and go to the playoffs.  But from a fan's standpoint, it's hard to take seriously.

Valpo plays Drake and Butler twice each in the course of its six game schedule.  Gotta be kidding me.

Presby is part of the show, but have they actually been made eligible for the league championship?

When the spring is over, Drake will only have about three months before fall camp starts. The season that follows will be much more intense.

Outside the PFL, two of the top three teams were defeated this weekend.

Normally Dominant State University lost for the first time since 2017.  And - of particular interest to Drake fans - Sugar Daddy State University also lost.

From that, it seems that Presbyterian is not eligible for the title.

any word on fans? If we’re allowing 900 masked folks indoors surely we can get that outdoors in a larger venue.

I haven't emailed anyone with that question.

The last time I went to Drake Stadium to see a "USD" game, the Dogs lost by 70. 'Must have been traumatic for the athletic director, who sold the 2019 SDSU home game to the Jacks.  At least, I hope Drake got money for giving that one up.

San Diego and Davidson both recorded 21-24 victories today.  They are the only unbeaten teams in the league standings.

They play each other next weekend in California.

I had USD/PC on in the background for a while, Presbyterian was up 7-3 and had the ball at their own 40 with about 30 seconds left. I stepped out of the room and came back to USD scoring a TD, they got a pick and picked up 30+ yards in a couple plays to score.
