Saw this yesterday too. I just don't see how you make that work but I don't know... I also don't know how I feel about it. We've been getting better and I honestly feel like the year Norton went down (and so many others) we would have made it if a few things went differently. I'd like to get to the tourney the real way but if this year has to be different so we can adapt, I get it. It just seems like it would be easier to do a bunch of mini bubbles within a conference or two and then just have a regular tourney... I don't really get the benefit of an All Team tourney. If anyone knows what some of the benefits might be, let me know.

No way that the P5 conferences are going to agree to this, other than the ACC, unless the formula is to have all of the mid-majors play each other first to get most of them eliminated.

That's kind of what I was thinking too.

I was thinking about this and said to myself...."Self, how is this that much different from the current method of the state high school tournaments in many states?" So, starting with 357 D-1 schools (according to the article attached on the initial post), it would take 8 games to win the NCAA championship, give or take a game, depending if there was a play in game or a bye game somewhere along the way. So, maybe 9 games max. Not all that much different from winning a state championship, which  in Illinois is 7 games (2 regional, 2 sectional, a supersectional, a semi-final, and the championship).
Not so drastic, or revolutionary. Can you imagine some of the great upsets? I say screw the conference tournaments. GO FOR IT!!!!

I totally agree with 67. Great upsets would be great and they will happen because it isn’t like the smaller teams can’t play - unless like Drakey said and they are all paired against each other in early rounds which could possibly end up with fewer mids in the final 64

That's o.k. If all the mids are paired up against each other, then that would more than likely mean that all the bigs are paired up against each other, so theoretically, the brackets should allow for an equal amount of bigs and mids, which is a better set up than currently. The only way that they could disrupt it would be if they make some kind of b.s. procedure that when the final 64 or 32 teams are determined, that a new adjusted bracket would be set, using some kind of excuse like travel, location, etc. That way they can manipulate it like they do now. But, more than likely, they would set it up like now, with all the bigs going against all the mids, I don't think that they would want all the mids against each other and all the bigs against each other, thus setting up an equal amount in the Sweet 16 or Elite 8. It might result in great theater and even ratings and interest, but probably not what they're looking for if it involves the mids.

I love the idea, but would like it kick off the season every year. Gives a chance for some mid major veteran led teams teach the freshman P5 team an early lesson. And it could help mid-majors resumes. Everyone is like they only watch  lodge basketball in March, here is another way to add viewers to in november.

My doomsday scenario above where there could be fewer mids in final 64 assumed that the little guys are paired against each other in early rounds - 2 extra rounds where they play their way into the round of 64 and the P5 get a couple buys. That could happen

Don't see how this works in a Covid world. I think this idea assumes we'll be vaccinated by then. I'm extremely doubtful of that.

I'm thinking the Mids already play each other when they have their conference tournaments.
