Just because the Drake stuff shouldn't be buried in the MVC thread.

I wish they could have landed one of those JUCO sophomores. Could always see a JUCO to join Yesufu in the class of 2023 next year.

I assume they still want a post player after the surprise departure of Robbins. The grad transfer market wouldn't be the worst thing for that (Pemsl?).

I agree that I wish we could have landed one of the JUCOs. I'm excited to have Bryceson and think he is gonna be a real asset in the valley, but getting a 3-year JUCO would have helped for scholly balance. I think we really have to get a grad transfer big and then immediately get on the hunt for a freshman big to come in and a JUCO big, preferably a 3-year guy. Either way, I have faith in DD to put together an effective roster.

Im not here to argue.

I'd take a flyer on Pemsl at this point and if I can't find a fr big then I put Sturtz on scholly for a year and go again for 2021.  If I can come out of 21 class with Conor, Tucker, and a big I would feel better about my roster build

I agree with that BRF.

Wouldn’t be surprised if Jordan K redshirts too.

Kwiecinski seems like a good bet to redshirt, unless Ferguson's health is still a problem. Sounds like his offense might be a little further away, Burns is a year older.

Yeah I definitely think the worst case scenario is Issa, Nate, and Jordan having to play the 5 next year. I think they get either Brodie and/or Pemsl. Wouldn't certainly prefer Pemsl if I have to pick one. I'm warming up to the idea of Issa being the backup 5, if we can just get one more post.

And yes we'll definitely need to be in the JUCO/grad market a year from now (not that we would ever decide not to be! you know what I mean...) since we'll definitely be losing one, maybe two, and hell possibly even three starters.

Have any of you actually watched Pemsl play?  I get that he has experience but he has been ravaged by injuries.  Unless he has some kind of miraculous recovery from all his injuries, I don't see any way he can come in and be our starting Center and play 20-25 minutes a game, which is what we need.  It would be the perfect scenario if he's healthy, but I don't see it.

It'll be interesting to see how it all shakes out. I have trust with DD to put together a competitive line-up. To me, you have to put Sturtz on a scholly this year, otherwise what's to keep him from leaving as well. He can't be pleased to still be a walk-on and outperforming half of our scholarship players

From a longer term standpoint, I think it makes more sense to have Sturtz on scholarship than not. Unless they get two top transfers interested (like the Norton level of transfer), you're not getting better players than him. They obviously wanted a JUCO wing but got a prep school freshman instead who hopefully can contribute. With five freshmen already, I don't think you need to take a shot on another (who tend to be longshots in spring anyway). They missed on the JUCO sophomores.

If Robbins was still here maybe you think differently but you have two open rides right now. You're not likely to find two better players.

Plus it's kind of the right thing to do etc.

He has proven himself to more than deserve a ride. Maybe get another player's parent on staff at Simpson or Central ... ya know ... pass the buck type deal. LOL!

He came to Drake as a walk-on.  No D1 offers out of high school.

He's certainly proved he can contribute at this level, so he deserves a scholarship now.

Word is that we have a pretty good shot at landing Seton Hall big man transfer Darnell Brodie. Some much needed size on the inside.

Welcome to the board.  There is a little bit of discussion about Brodie over here

I wasn't sure where to put this... thought about the Liam thread initially...Here's an article by Jeff Goodman about how transferring up typically tends to be a challenge for most Mid-Major players: https://watchstadium.com/transferring-up-proves-to-be-a-challenge-for-most-mid-major-hoopers-04-13-2020/
