Shelton was certainly star crossed with two programs canceled underneath him. I met him once when I was in Des Moines and saw a few of his team's games. When he came to Pacific I ran into him at some event. He was still smarting about the Drake (but philosophic about it) move although he really landed on his feet. I attended a few football games when he coached in Stockton. Pacific had the same problem a Drake, They had somewhat better attendance but not enough better.

When Lynn King became AD at Pacific there was a strong movement (from X players and fans) to bring football back. However, the numbers just didn't add up, even with some big donors offering to kicking some money. King offered them non scholarship in the Pioneer League but there was negative interest. So a couple of years ago Pacific tore the stadium down and I think it is now a soccer field.

There have been many Drake-UOP connections over the years.  Bulldog players in Pi Kappa Alpha surely recognize the name Voltmer...as in the Voltmer Trophy awarded to the fraternity with the most successful intramural teams.

The trophy is named after Edward Voltmer, once the head of Drake's phys ed department. He and his brother Carl, then a professor at Pacific, wrote Manual for Athletes - Fundamentals in Sports.  Published in 1949, it covers coaching basics in 12 sports...with advice on nutrition, sleep, medical care, "proper sex life," along with some wisdom covering what we now call "sports psychology."  All of this in 210 pages...

Fun reading if you can find a copy.
