This next two weeks will be interesting. Although Bradley has their two toughest weekends in the first half just ahead they have been impressive recently and should not be taken lightly. I expect they will lose at least 3 of the 4 games but if they manage to win 2 or even 3 of the games that will be impressive. Drake and Missouri State with UNI on their heels remain the teams to beat. I could see any of the 3 winning the regular season crown. If the Missouri State team of the first month of the season emerges from hibernation then they will be the clear favorite. Folks on their board are saying that they had that loss coming given how average they have played in recent weeks. So we blow out 2 teams at home and fall 10 spots or so in RPI. What a joke. Right now we have put ourselves in good position to get at an at large berth if we lose only to UNI or Mo State. The MVC tournament is set up to have some upsets that could throw in a monkey wrench in things. We will be in the unfortunate position in the tournament and I think even in the regular season of needing to root for Missouri State except for when we play them because if we don't win the MVC tournament we sure as heck don't want anybody else to win it but them. There is no way the NCAA will take 3 teams from the MVC. I wonder If Maahs from UNi will be back in uniform soon?

Women's RPI Rankings:
2 Missouri State 38 Drake 48 UNI 66 Southern Illinois 72 Bradley 78 Illinois State 95 Loyola Chicago 183 Valpo 269 Indiana State 327 Evansville
Missouri State's loss was bad enough to drop them just outside AP Top 25 to 26th.
Conference Standings: 1) Bradley (5-0) 2) Drake (4-1) 3) Missouri State (4-1) 4) Loyola (4-2) 5) Northern Iowa (3-2) 6) Illinois State (3-2) 7) Southern Illinois (2-3) 8) Valpo (2-4) 9/10) Evansville/Indiana State (0-6)
While back-to-back 100 point games was nice, no question this was our easiest weekend of the conference schedule.
Regarding bracketology, I think it's nice to see the current theory that even if someone surprises at Hoops in the Heartland and steals the autobid Charlie thinks Drake & MSU have good enough resumes for 3 MVC teams in. If you look at the out list UNI is the 6th team out right now. However, I agree in that I don't think anyone expects it to pan out that way.

Regarding RPI rankings, you could win by 1 or win by 150, RPI does not take margin of victory into account. Additionally the teams around us had much better opponents. In a couple weeks if we keep winning we should be back up around the 20-25 rank.

Big road trip on tap for the Bulldogs this weekend. First up on Friday night is Illinois State who gave us a good fight in last year's tournament and is on the rise. Then we have Bradley on Sunday, the surprise team of the Valley this year and currently on top. They'll be looking at this game as an opportunity for statement win. Two important wins if we want a top-2 seed in Moline.

Keep the ball moving on offense, keep turnovers below 16 (for Drake that would be amazing) and don't play a zone defense.

Any team can win on their home floor,But Bradley has not played any really good teams yet! If we had schedule like theirs our record would just like theirs.

If I had to choose the winner of each Individual game of the 4 games at Bradley and ISU this weekend I would choose UNI and Drake to win all 4 games. However all 4 games could go either way and we better come to play both games. Although Bradley's schedule has been weak the margin in recent wins has been impressive. Bradley is going to find these next two weekends where they stand in the MVC. Evansville and Indiana State are horrible. Valpo is average. But everybody else in the MVC is capable of beating any other team on a given night. I still think 16-2 will win the MVC outright.

Say what you want about the RPI. Seven teams in the Valley are ranked in the top 100. (Valpo 183, Indiana St 272 and Evansville 326) If UNi, THE Missouri State University, SIU, Ill St., Loyola or Bradley play well at home, and Drake shoots below their average, with the way too often 20+ turnovers, the 'Dogs would probably lose. The defense is improving, and must continue to get better. Love the speed of the ball movement, all five ladies moving away from the ball setting picks, but the turnovers must stop. The simple math. If Drake can bring the turnovers down by 10, shoot 50% from the floor, that is a minimum of 20 more points. Continue to improve the women-to-women defense, cut down on the turnovers and this team will win the Valley and have a chance to advance deep at the dance.

Continue to improve the women-to-women defense, cut down on the turnovers and this team will win the Valley and have a chance to advance deep at the dance. I don't think we have played women to women defense the whole year. It sometimes has the appearance of women to women because we match up with the player in our zone more closely than we were earlier in the year. But when a player runs out of the zone we do not follow them. Yes our defense has improved but has a long ways to go. I do think that the teams in the MVC play good enough defense that we are not going to shoot 50% or hold down turnovers a lot of games. Realistically the RPI is probably fairly accurate in terms of assessing where each team in the MVC stands in comparison to the others. Mo. State, Drake and UNI are probably the top 3 teams in that order. Bradley and Southern Illinois are vying for 4th and 5th and Illinois State and Loyola are vying for 6th and 7th. I think we are improving after our wakeup call at Oklahoma. Missouri State proved earlier in the year that they have the ability to play at a higher level than they have played recently. Will Southern Illinois be their wakeup call. They may not return to their earlier level. if they do not I like our chances. If they do start playing better we will really have to up our game to compete with them. We have the skills to compete with them but their combination of skills and athleticism presents a problem. Southern Illinois has a good starting 5 and great athletes. They are a scary team. UNI is UNI and with Maahs playing they are really tough. Bradley we will see. The next two weeks should really prove interesting and will give us a good idea where the top 5 teams stand relative to one another. We need to take care of business this weekend and win both games but doing so on the road may be not much more than a 50/50 probability or 60/40 at best. But get two wins and it will be a great weekend.

When I see a Drake defending guard go through the lane with the opposing guard it's not a zone to me. Not sure why you don't think Drake will shoot 50%. In five Valley games Drake has shot over 50% in four of them. The only game below was the loss to Missouri State at 46%. 'Dogs are shooting .492 from the floor this year, just 34% from three. I know this... we would both love to see them win conference, the MVC tournament and make a run in The Dance. Also, it would be great to see three teams from the Valley get invites.

BIG WIN ON THE ROAD AGAINST A VERY GOOD ILL STATE TEAM!! 69-67 in OT
Shooting was off, but the women played hard on both ends. Maddie Monahan had five assists, 10 points and was awesome on defense. Go get those Braves!!

Based on watching recent games Bradley may be playing better than us and Missouri State right now. A win against Bradley at Bradley would be really huge and put us in good position in the MVC race. One game at a time though. The wins are harder to get this year but that helps us in both our preparations and seedings in the postseason so lets go get a victory Sunday.

By the way apparently Franklin was injured in second half. I don't know how serious it is. I do not wish injuries on anybody but her loss if she is forced to miss any games beyond Sunday would be a big loss for Missouri State.

Case in point the game against Illinois State and probably the game against Bradley and the next game against Missouri State. And in the NCAA tournament the same is true. We simply are not going to shoot as high a % against Illinois State as we are against Evansville. And that is why we have to continue to improve our defense so that other teams will have a more difficult time scoring against us. Because we simply can't count on outscoring everyone.as they are trying to stop us from scoring. I think here at Drake we love our offense but don't place enough emphasis on defense.

I watched the entire game against Illinois State. The Drake guards followed the ISU guards step for step to the baseline. If you look back at this thread, much of it is about the lack of detail on the defense end. That being said, there has been much better communication between the players when it comes to defense. Coach ILL St post game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8fDxC1Sd8wI have been watching the Monday Coach Show" on Facebook. I will ask Coach B about the defense. It's not the same zone, thank goodness. If it is, they are improving.

With the Valley getting better,we sure can not compete with only 2 players in double figures! If the three won't work go to Sara in the paint that always works.

Once again poor defense cost us a game, lots of missed chances and unforced turn overs. We will be lucky to finish in 4th or 5th place this year if things don't change.Only high point is friday we will see Sara break 2000 points and she deserves it!

Played hard! However, I'm sorry, there is no road team in America, men or women, that should be shooting 33 times from three. However, let's take a breath. They have lost to the other top teams in the conference, Bradley and The Missouri State University, at their places by just two points. Both schools must come to Des Moines. They aren't finishing fourth or fifth. Got to play better defense and stop throwing it up from three when you have Sara on the team.
