Aside from coaching future Kansas City Chiefs, such as Mike Livingston and Jonathan Hayes, Fry is part of Kansas City football lore because of his interaction with Lamar Hunt, the late Chiefs owner.
The Southwest conference was segregated when Fry, then an assistant at Arkansas, was recruited to be the head coach at SMU. As a condition of taking the job, Fry demanded the ability to recruit black players. It was SMU alumnus Hunt who negotiated on behalf of his alma mater. Hunt told Fry that if he took the job, he could recruit one black player. Fry accepted, and that player turned out to be All-American Jerry LeVias.
Fry's Iowa assistants included future Wisconsin hc/ad Barry Alvarez, who had coached Drake's Dave Killpack in high school.
