Here's a good ESPN article about the Thanksgiving opportunity for a Mid-major team to build their non-conference resume. Bottom-line, wins over POWER5 Conferences. Drake will play Purdue today, hopefully Arizona State in the second round. Play great defense in those two and win, it would hopefully see Drake play Mid-Major #1 Gonzaga for the championship.
Also, it has the top ten Mid-major rankings. #1 Gonzaga #2 Missouri St #3 South Dakota (Drake lost @ SD in OT) #4 Drake #5 Ohio #6 UNI https://www.espn.com/womens-college-basketball/story/_/id/28173718/why-mid-majors-most-gain-thanksgiving-tournaments

Purdue 67 Drake 47 Final. Drake played well in quarters 1, 3, & 4 but the 2nd quarter disaster was too much to overcome. Drake will play Maine, the America East Favorite, tomorrow at 12:30 PM CT.
Purdue figured out how to stop Sara Rhine and Hittner couldn't make shots. Younger players got good looks but didn't have the experience to execute.

Ladies defeat Auburn 83-82. Rhine hit two big free throws with :08 remaining. When the 'Dogs have movement away from the ball they take control. They also did a good job of breaking the press. 12-13 from the line.
That being said, still had 19 turnovers and the defense continues to be soft, really soft! Can anybody explain why Drake doesn't play woman-to-woman?

Beating an SEC school is cool and all, but this team has raised their own bar where I'm not really impressed by beating this Auburn team by 1. If you look at their record, they aren't going to be finishing at the the top of the SEC.

hamlox I can't explain. In both the Purdue and Auburn games when the opposition switched from man to zone defense we got in big trouble very quickly.
TennisDog2013 Auburn was picked to finish 7th out of 14 in the SEC.
It wasn't mentioned here but Drake did defeat America East favorite Maine no problem on Saturday. It may have helped that Maine was out their best player who was injured in their game on Friday.
While this tournament could be looked upon as a missed opportunity and a disappointment as we finished 5th and suffered a very bad loss to Purdue, coming out 2-1 is still not bad. One could see noticeable improvement in the second half of today's game. Not to discount Waldorf but the women won't have a true next game until at Oklahoma on 12/17. This gives Drake a lot of time to review film and develop what needs to be developed in practice.

+xBeating an SEC school is cool and all, but this team has raised their own bar where I'm not really impressed by beating this Auburn team by 1. If you look at their record, they aren't going to be finishing at the the top of the SEC. A win is a win, even better on the road or neutral court. If this team wants to be considered a top 25 team, not a top Mid-major, they will have to play like it. That will start with better defense. Drake has played a very good non-conference school, but they have not beat anybody in the top 25. That leaves very few Mid-major at-large teams after the NCAA fills their bracket with the 32 conference champions and the other 20+ Power5 schools. Let's be real, Missouri State, UNI, Illinois State, maybe others in the Valley are going to make winning in the Valley more difficult. Last year Drake defeated South Carolina, played Notre Dame respectfully and still only got a 10 seed. Glad Drake won two out of three this weekend, but getting crushed by Purdue was a missed opportunity to play teams ranked in the top 30 (Arizona State and Gonzaga). When all the offensive gears are in motion, Drake is awesome on that half of the court. I'm just not sure why it's so difficult for this team to learn how to play defense. I wish somebody would give me an answer on why Drake plays no women-to-women defense. Gonzaga is good, really good!

Winning the Auburn game was mainly huge in that it avoided another loss on the resume. Despite the improved MVC, we're playing with fire with 1 or 2 more non-con losses

On the road, Missouri State's only loss was at #5 Oregon State. Finally cracked the top 25, sitting at 22. Gonzaga looked like a top 10 team to me. Zags only loss was at #1 Standford in OT. They are sitting only at #18. Drake has some nice wins, including a win over South Dakota St who defeated #21 South Florida; and a win over Creighton who beat #23 WVU. Never bad to beat POWER5 teams: Iowa State and Auburn. Obviously every non-conference game is a must.
'Dogs are in the ix of "others" in the polls. The NCAA has always favored the power schools. Sadly, every game is a must win when you're a mid-major.

If you watched the Gulf Coast Showcase video (or in person) you may have noticed Monica Burich was on the stationary bike when she wasn't on the court. She's sitting out today's game in what is being described as a "minor injury" with no further details.
In more positive injury news, Maggie Bair returning today after a back injury.
Drake up 32-6 with 7:30 to go in the 2nd quarter against Waldorf.

Even if it is a fun game for the kids from the schools ,I think it hurts the team to play such under matched teams this time of year. Maybe have that game the very first one of the season or after the season.

Long time lurker of this prestigious board. I think this looks so so bad on Drake athletics part in playing an NAIA school. The least they could of done is play a D2 school. What does this accomplish??? Waldorf is a pay to play school and Drake is a top 40 women's division 1 basketball program the comparison would be the Lakers playing a Ray G coached men's team. Such a joke in my opinion and this is coming from someone who enjoys watching the team. I wish there could be a middle of the ground solution where they play a clearly winnable game while packing the stands.

NAIA sort of straddles the line between NCAA D2 and D3. Some actual scholarship players but then there's also for-profit schools like Waldorf. Obviously there's only one D2 school in Iowa although there a bunch in border states.
Do they have trouble finding an opponent willing to play at 11 AM on a weekday? They blitzed Clarke last year, but they were at least a good NAIA team. Waldorf lost by 73 to Dordt and by 48 to Grand VIew.

To me, there was something ironic about playing a game sponsored by “Character Counts”....and the beating your opponent by 84 points.
But, Drake wasn’t even trying to run up the score, Waldorf got a payday, and it didn’t even count against their record (it was technically an exhibition game for them)

I agree there are some good NAIA schools (all realtive) that could compete with D2 but at least be smart about the game. There are several schools in Kansas, Wisconsin, Illinios that could easily fill the void in my opinion.
I would not think 11am is an issue; many men's division 1 teams play early games and if anything they travel the night before so the time of the game should not matter. This would never happen but my suggestion would be to do a non con game against UNI and have it alternate sites and prioritize the tickets to people of the community just for that one game. This would never happen, but I think it would be a more interesting solution. How can you keep young kids engaged at all when they are winning by 30 let alone 80.
