Am I the only one who doesn't think they should kick him off the team? He didn't do anything with malicious intent. Accidentally shot a gun that he apparently has a permit for and then got scared and lied about it. Suspend him sure, but he's not a bad kid.

I thought I remember seeing a post about an event that sounds suspiciously like this a few weeks back. Must have been a fever dream. Hopefully this ends up being much ado about nothing but the optics aren't great.

He made a mistake and lied. You don't ruin a kid's life over something like this. It's unfortunate.
Moving forward.....

I wouldn't be surprised if there was pressure to boot him but I think it would be harsh for mostly just being an idiot.
Also that could blow up chemistry since a bunch of the guys on the team know each other from growing up.

Two misdemeanor charges. No felonies. 10 or 12-game suspension?

This sort of charge, sadly the punishment is likely more about how its perceived by the public and how the President and trustees react than what he actually did. Given the brutal headlines I've seen, it might not go in Tremell's favor.

What is a 19 year old college student doing with a .22 in his nightstand? He's lucky the guy who caught the stray bullet is still alive.
At least from what I remember 27th street isn't on campus. I'm not sure about in Des Moines, but lying to the cops/obstruction of justice in Chicago is a huge deal. I'm sure he's a good kid, however my oldest is getting ready to be shipped off to college next year. If I was paying minimum $35K/year to send him to a private university and something like this happened, it would be a red flag.

Obviously, I’m glad the other young man was not seriously hurt. I also hope Tremell is okay...I know how bad I’d feel if it was me....gotta be weighing on him.
From what I’ve heard, the gun was legally owned and the shooting was accidental. I hope Drake allows him to remain in school and finish his education.

Since I didn't mention it before, I'm grateful the student is OK. And though I suggested 10-12 games, if the administration kicked him off the team, I couldn't blame them. This obviously could have been much worse, and, even if the weapon is legally owned, I would hope that there there is a "no guns" rule on the team going forward (if there wasn't already). Not sure how enforceable that kind of rule is, but it'd be preferable.

I had friends who owned guns just because they could. Second, this could happen anywhere and has. He was a scared young man when police showed up. You'd be scared too. And if you were young and black you'd be more scared. From what I know Tremell is a great kid and there has been no pattern of behavior that would suggest otherwise. Unlike Free Socks. It was an accident. Hope they give the kid a break.

Alot of holier than though assholes with no empathy out there - Accidents happen - doesn't mean no punishment is deserved, but does mean there should be a level of understanding among us.

The university ought to have enough heart to help Tremell and the injured kid through this.

First off, I'm so glad the victim is okay. On Tremell, both charges are misdemeanors and the gun was legally owned. I bet we don't see him until at least 4-5 games into conference play, but I doubt he's dismissed from school. If he had the gun on campus, that's probably a different story. This is a BIG mistake and he better learn a life long lesson from this, but I don't think they'll ruin the kid's future over this.

The young man definitely needs a refresher course in firearms safety. Very fortunate that more damage was not done. I hope he has learned a valuable lesson.
