Curious, why is every school traveling for 10 days, but Drake's only seven days? '67, I'm thinking you feel better that a trip to Costa Rica will probably be less expensive than crossing the pond. Plus, while all the other schools are traveling for ten days, Drake's trip is seven days. Basketball in Costa Rica? No clue who the 'Dogs will play. However, it appears the Costa Rica national team has never qualified for the FIBA World Cup or the FIBA AmeriCup. Now ranked 94th, the team has shown strong performances at the regional level. At the 2015 FIBA COCABA Championship, Costa Rica finished 2nd, its best performance so far. Did you know the first natives in Costa Rica were hunters, and gatherers, and Costa Rica served as an intermediate region between Mesoamerican and Andean native cultures. In 1502, Christopher Columbus made landfall in Costa Rica. Soon after, his forces overcame the indigenous people. He incorporated the territory into the Captaincy General of Guatemala as a province of New Spain in 1524. For the next 300 years, Costa Rica was a colony of Spain. As a result, Costa Rica's culture has been greatly influenced by the culture of Spain.[1] During this period, Costa Rica remained sparsely developed and impoverished. Following the Mexican War of Independence (1810–1821), Costa Rica became part of the independent Mexican Empire in 1821. Subsequently, Costa Rica was part of the Federal Republic of Central America in 1823, before gaining full independence in 1838. Its economy struggled due to lack of connections with European suppliers. In 1856, Costa Rica resisted United States settlers from mounting a take-over of the government. After 1869, Costa Rica established a democratic government.[1] After the Costa Rican Civil War in 1948, the government drafted a new constitution, guaranteeing universal suffrage and the dismantling of the military. Today, Costa Rica is a democracy that relies on technology and eco-tourism for its economy. Although poverty has declined since the turn of the 21st century, economic problems still exist. Costa Rica is facing problems of underemployment, foreign and internal debt, and a trade deficiency.[1]

+xCurious, why is every school traveling for 10 days, but Drake's only seven days? Travel. Getting anywhere overseas takes two days coming out of Des Moines and you want to allow time for delays. Staying within the Americas is shorter travel time.

Staying within the Americas is shorter travel time. Obviously. When Drake went to Italy they had competition from other countries. Maybe teams out of Mexico, Canada, Argentina or Brazil will be there to compete. I can't imagine Costa Rica has anybody worth playing besides their 94th ranked, never to advance to an Olympics, national team. Notice, I didn't suggest Venezuela.

Is anyone thinking about going to Costa Rica? I mean I'm probably not, but at the same time I am intrigued. Or anybody going to the Gulf Coast Tournament?

Don't underestimate Costa Rica's team. Baloncesto Estrella is playing for them. We recruited him back in the day.
Moving forward.....

I'll probably be in FL (hopefully for both the boys and the girls) since it's a quasi-home game for me.

I mentioned we like this Florida tourney. Estero is a nice place, super nice in my book is Sanibel Island and Captiva. Former Des Moines Register Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist Ding Darling has a National bird and animal refuge on Sanibel that is scenic and interesting to drive through. The area was also the winter home to Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, and enjoyed exploring workshops and homes. Bought a bunch of Edison CD's and light bulbs. It seemed the games started later and you had time to explore in the AM.

Drake Men's Basketball just posted some pics of practice in Costa Rica, Brady looks like he might be a bit bigger than Nick.

Here are the pictures (it’s “for” Costa Rica not “in” Costa Rica for what it’s worth) https://twitter.com/drakebulldogsmb/status/1137025974581760000?s=21Some more mystery faces in the last pic. I wonder if they’re using this time frame as walk-on tryouts. If that’s a thing that happens. Nick Norton is pictured as well. However he looks to more be in coaching attire. Not necessarily a surprise since I think we all figured he’d be with the team in -some- capacity. But good to see him out there.
