THE OFFICIAL TENNISDOG 2019 SEASON PREVIEW (HIGH LEVEL VERSION, MORE DETAIL TO COME):
  • I expected more out of our fall season, so my expectations for the spring season aren't as high as they were in September.
  • Four matches in two days to start the weekend. Should win three of them. Could see a loss to either Purdue or Illinois State, as we play those teams on the same day. I imagine we beat Purdue, but could be a bit tired against Illinois State (who only has one match that day). Getting on and off the court with as many straight sets matches as possible will be key that Sunday.
  • ITA Kickoff weekend starts with Oklahoma, which will likely be a loss. Notre Dame or Vandy after that, so could leave that weekend with two losses.
  • We're home pretty much all of February, and taking advantage of that will be key. Dartmouth, Indiana, Oregon, Nebraska - four names we could beat in this timeframe hopefully. More four matches in two days stuff
  • Literally no home matches after February 23 though. On the road through April 28, which is the Summit League tournament. Absolutely brutal, because it isn't just sticking around the midwest either. They'll be hopping from state to state: Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa, Michigan, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Colorado, Indiana, Illinois, Virginia, Oklahoma. The "play Western Michigan in the morning in Kalamazoo, be in East Lansing by the afternoon to play Michigan State" seems especially brutal.
  • Always a good chance to get to the NCAA tournament because The Summit League isn't very strong and if we're healthy we should be able to beat anyone in that tournament. The road-heavy schedule will be beneficial for the tourney IF we can get wins and confidence is high (duh).
  • Coach clearly stacked the schedule with a lot of difficulty, both in terms of the teams on the schedule and the situations (multiple matches a day, lots of road matches, etc.). Hopefully everyone can stay healthy this season!
I do not envy all the time they'll be spending in those big white vans :D

Definitely surprised that Northern Illinois was the toughest match of the weekend. Maybe just first match jitters or maybe NIU is decent.

Checked out a little of the new HD camera set up at the Tennis Center. Pretty nice. It was during the Northern Illinois match. From what I saw, Northern had a decent couple of players

Looking at the box score, it looks like we missed a big opportunity to beat Vandy. Lost 2-4, but two of the losses were close enough where we could have pulled them out for a win.

That would have been a nice win.  Very easily could have won the doubles point, and then just needed one other win.

Disappointing loss to Dartmouth at home.

I got a bad feeling we may not be as good as I had expected this season. (Granted, my expectations were top 25)

I just don't understand this schedule at all.  Who goes on the road for a month and a half?  I'll be honest, I"m not sure how they expect kids to actually get to class during these 2 months.  This is ridiculous.  I was hoping to see a match this year, and then looked at the schedule and like you said the home season is over in 2 weeks and I probably can't make it up.  If we win the conference tourney we'll be the 4 seed and draw a 1 seed and probably lose 4-0.  Might grab a match or 2.  Kind of worried about the future of the program to be honest.  Losing Gillespie at the top of the lineup who has been a rock for us.  A lot of Sr's on the roster.

Like basketball, being a midmajor in tennis means scheduling can be tough. Somewhere along the line the home/away aspect got messy it would seem. Clearly big schools are willing to come to Des Moines, which is great, but it is a home and home series. Except for Minnesota, they're jerks.

Hopefully the home-and-homes don't mean this is the way the schedule is going to work every year moving forward. Need to have the same breakout of home and away, but interchanging more.

And yeah... next year could be rough. I don't think Vinny is as consistent as Anis Ghorbel or Alen Salibasic were at 1 a handful of years ago, but he's definitely the only player on the team that I'd want at that 1 spot. Don't know who fills that next year.

3 out of 4 this weekend. Looking at the scores against Oregon in the match we lost, 3 of them could have gone our way. And they are ranked 15. And we are putting our annual beat down on Nebraska already clinched the match 4 matches in. Not sure they have ever beaten us.

We've only won 1 of our last 7 matches. All on the road, but still. Losing to Tulsa, Arizona, Tulane, San Diego State, Wichita State, and Denver aren't BAD losses because those are all good teams, but we don't seem to be that close in a number of these. Great teams find ways to scrap out at least a couple of those. We're not great this year. Good, maybe. But not great.
This season unfortunately seems to point out that just because you return everyone from a previous season, it doesn't guarantee success.

Also, this was the first time in a LONG time we've lost to Iowa.

I have said from day 1 whoever made this schedule is an idiot.  It really doesn't matter what our record is at the end of the year as we were going to have to win the league tournament.  Pretty much knew it was going to be between us and Denver.  Like you said, Tennis, none of these are considered bad losses.  I'm just not sure how you can expect kids to go on the road from February 23rd-April 28th.  I'm guessing if 4-5 of these matches were at home we would have won them.  Something just seems to be missing w/this team this year, and I blame a lot of it on the schedule.  Still think there's a good chance to make the tournament, but will probably be a 4 seed in the 4 team region and be gone after the 1st match.

Very nice win over Denver today in a fantastic match to win the league tourney. Came down to the last match in a 3rd set tiebreak. Congrats Dogs! Going to miss these Srs.

Get Cal Bears in the first round. They are ranked #33. Usually I'd say that would be quite beatable for us, but we haven't really proven ourselves capable of beating Top 50 teams this season.

Expected us to draw higher-ranked Illinois first round honestly.

Better than playing Illinois, at least I think.  They played a really tough schedule, obviously the Pac 12 is a great league, and beat #12 UCLA in the Pac 12 tourney before losing to USC in the final.  They were probably on the bubble to get in before the last week of the season, but we would have to play our best match of the season to win.  It's so hard to beat really good teams when you never win the doubles point, and we rarely do, which means taking 4 out of 6 matches in singles.  They don't have any singles players ranked in the top 100 that I see, and honestly I think we could win court 1 and a few other courts could be very close.  If we can win the doubles point, I honestly think we have a chance.  Lose and it's probably curtains.  Thoughts Tennis?
