+xThat 1985 Drake-Iowa State game was apparently the result of a late scheduling change. I have an early-1980s media guide, with future D schedules. It shows Drake hosting Cornell University on that daye on '85. At the time, (Iowa native) Bob Blackman coached Cornell. Back in the 1950s, Blackman's Denver teams had played Drake. But Blackman had left Cornell by 82 or 83, and the Drake game fell through. It was fortuitous that Iowa State then stepped up with a paycheck... ...but I wonder if Drake will ever get another shot at an Ivy League team. ;-) It's not like Drake hasn't tried to play and Ivy League team...None of them want to give any type of return game, and the money isn't worth going east...they can do better with a MVFC team. I would love to see Drake tee it up against Brown, Harvard, Cornell, etc. but it's not going to happen anytime soon.

I was worried about playing a team like ISU and the physical toll it would take but Hardin and Fox made it sound like the guys are really excited for this opportunity. Hopefully Drake extracted a pretty penny for this opportunity :D

And I think it's possible that the Ivy League could eventually allow its champion to play is a bowl game. The Ivy's Executive Director, Robin Harris, compared a bowl to playoff participation. “A one-game postseason opportunity might have more of a shot than a multi-game possibility,” says Harris, “but the issue there is, who do we play? It seems like other conference champions are tied up.” In the same article, Princeton head coach Bob Surace suggested playing one of the historically black schools. However, the SWAC and MEAC champions already play in the Celebration Bowl. It's the black college championship, and they aren't giving that up. Hey guys, how about the PFL champ? Yes, the PFL would have to give up its playoff slot. No big deal. It would help if the PFL changed its rules to allow some athletic money toward student loans (exactly what USD was caught doing a few years ago.) Go Bulldogs!

My preferences for a bowl location. 1st choice: Daytona Stadium. 2nd choice: Children's Mercy Park. (potentially cold weather)

+xRetiring "20-17" should not be done for less than 300k. Incarnate Word was going to get 300k, so I would be disappointed if Drake took less.

+x+xThe average payout for these types of games against power 5 schools is about 4-5 hundred thousand dollars. There are schools getting a million to provide a victory for power 5 schools fairly regularly. what does it cost to field an FCS scholarship team. It seems like it might be profitable to go back to providing scholarships and schedule two or three of these games a year. The money might finance a pretty decent program. I think the math was done on that decades ago. It doesn`t work. The payments to the patsies has increased dramatically since then. P5 schools are paying a fortune for victories now.

So, realistically, just how lopsided will this game be? I don’t expect ISU’s starters to even play a half.
Fox will pull out every trick play in his playbook.....all zero of them. Seriously, has he ever ran something unusual?

However, I believe Brad Pole has called plays for the past 3+ years. http://timesdelphic.com/2015/10/new-play-caller-and-sauberts-big-day-contribute-in-drakes-win/

Thanks....I wasn't sure if Fox was the offensive coordinator, or somebody else.

Drake's worst beatdown in history was 85-7, to Ohio State in the 1930s. It would be unsportsmanlike for Iowa State to rewrite our records in this situation. So I hope their second half play calling is predictable. And maybe they'll use some lube.

I was thinking ISU might play the starters one series. I assume every walk-on at ISU will play significant minutes. I can't believe that would want to risk injuries.

Agreed^
Would they even release a line for this game? I don’t exactly know how that stuff works but curious what the spread would be.

Seeing as they are too afraid to play us in basketball anymore, I hope we held out for a king's ransom!!! It was Iowa who backed out of the HyVee Classic. Iowa State reportedly willing to keep playing us in men's basketball as long as it's not at the Knapp Center. Back to football, picked up my tickets last night on StubHub for $10.06 including processing fees. If you end up in section M near row 32 you'll have at least 9 other Drake fans with you. Also, if you haven't heard RAYGUN has put together a T-Shirt for this game. I picked up mine today. https://www.raygunsite.com/collections/t-shirts-1/products/the-availa-bowl-shirt-blueIf you go in person they are making the shirts on demand, so go to the counter.

Odds open with Iowa State as only a 42.5 point favorite.
