linkNothing real in-depth in the link above, but raises the question of wrestling returning to Drake.

I don't see Drake keeping football much longer. Drake needs to add some more sports and wrestling would be a good sport to add. Adding more sports could help build enrollment.

I don't think football is going anywhere. It brings ~ 100 male students to Drake who otherwise would not be there. With Drake's enrollment decline recently, they couldn't afford that. Right now, most schools are dropping sports....very few are adding them. Almost every sport (other than big time football and basketball) is a money loser. I'm all for Drake adding more sports, but only if they can handle it financially.

Considering how much this state supports wrestling, I think it’s not a bad idea to give it a try.

Maybe they can add women's wrestling, too, if there is such a thing. I know they have to balance every men's sport with a women's sport.

Good idea. I was trying to think of other women’s sports.
I wonder if any of Drake’s fuels are suitable for lacrosse....I have no idea of the dimensions of a lacrosse field.

I was thinking the same about the cost, DUB.
I assume a football field would work for lacrosse.

I wonder if gymnastics would be on the table to compensate. Another sport that has done well in this state.
Would they need a sport to compensate? Right now it’s 9 women’s sports and 7 men’s sports. Granted I’m sure it goes by number of students, not number of sports and football probably balances it out.

NCAA lacrosse field dimensions: 1. The playing area shall be rectangular and marked with a solid lined boundary. Optimal field dimensions shall be 60 meters (65 yards) in width and 110 meters (120 yards) in total length, with goals 92 meters (100 yards) apart. Where optimal field dimensions cannot be met due to field-space limitations, the field must be between 101 and 110 meters (110 to 120 yards) from end line to end line and between 55 and 64 meters (60 to 70 yards) from sideline to sideline. The goals shall be placed not more than 92 meters (100 yards) and not less than 82 meters (90 yards) apart, measured from goal line to goal line. There must be 9 meters (10 yards) of space behind each goal line, extending to the end line and running the width of the field. There must be a minimum of 4 meters (4.4 yards) of space between the sideline boundary and the scorer’s/timer's table. There should be at least 4 meters (4.4 yards) of space between the other sideline and any spectator area. There should be 2 meters(6'6") of space beyond each end line
I don't know if the stadium is wide enough. Maybe just barely with the smaller width. I've been in favor of lacrosse for a while though. Growing sport. Still predominately played by upper middle class kids. Not fully funded (12.6 scholarships for men, 12.0 for women with average squad sizes of 30–45 so you can boost enrollment with the types of students Drake likely wants.

Girls lacrosse is becoming more and more popular with Missouri high schools as there are over 60 schools with girls lacrosse. More are being added each year.

NCAA rules requires you have to offer two more women's sports than men's sports. A lacrosse field easily fits on a football field so outside of having multiple line sets it should be fine from that perspective.

Is there a cost effective way to add lacrosse lines to Drake stadium or would they have to get a whole new field?

Women's wrestling has created a scholarship path to possibly elevate wrestling back to a varsity sport. Men's wrestling requires 9.9 scholarships and women's wrestling requires 12 scholarships at DI level.
Drake would need roughly 3 more women's scholarships to balance out their population with Title IX if both men's and women's wrestling are funded as varsity sports.

Lonnie Timmerman was ranked 12th (probably now 13th) following the 2022-23 season in NCAA DI coaching victories at 364. He was ahead of Iowa coaching legend Dan Gable (15th), but behind Iowa State legend Harold Nichols (2nd). ALL-TIME Coaches(D-I)– Top 100 The tournament Drake students have competed/can compete for club wrestling championships since varsity funding was eliminated following the 1992-93 season. NCWA National Collegiate Wrestling ChampionshipsEven if Drake never restores the varsity program, they should recognize the team's history somewhere on campus. There is a lot of accomplishments there both at conference and NCAA level.

Someone once told me gymnastics is deceptively expensive because with the injury rate being so high the healthcare & insurance rates go through the roof. While Iowa is big into wrestling, most of Drake's student body has traditionally been from outside of Iowa. Considering Iowa, Iowa State, and UNI all have solid wrestling programs I don't know if it's something we need to get involved with. Also keep in mind athletics by their own admission has problems with support staff as it is, adding more sports isn't going to help that problem at all.

I think lacrosse would now be in Mediacom Stadium. If they did add both wrestling and lacrosse as varsity funded sports, they would probably be affiliates of the Big 12 conference. UNI is a wrestling affiliate of the Big 12. The Big 12 just added lacrosse as a varsity contested sport and they are begging for affiliate members. The Drake lacrosse club played in Drake Stadium, but I think they now may be moving to Mediacom Stadium... Drake Men's Lacrosse Picture
