Now that we're in the Valley, let's see where Drake Nation stands on Niko. I like what I see so far, I'm on board.

For me, its just crazy what he's doing with essentially the same bunch of guys that were one of the worst teams I've ever seen in D-1 basketball (with an RPI to match what we saw). Not only that it was a boring, slow team. I'm amazed at what he's gotten out of this group of guys. I have no doubt that rough patches await us this year. This is still the team that lost to Omaha and threw up on themselves at Iowa. But the progress is simply remarkable.

I think what we have seen thus far makes me think Niko is a good coach. Definitely a good coach. Depending on what happens the rest of the year, especially when teams start playing each other the second time, I think there is a chance for us to think we got a great coach.
In short, I don't say "We'll be pretty dang good in three years, just give us three years" anymore like I used to based off of being burned the last couple coaches... but I now tell people that I have more positive vibes about this coach than I did the last one for sure.

This is where I'm at right now as well. Don't get me wrong, I'm over the moon right now with the 3-0 start but there's 15 conference games left and things can still go downhill quick like they did last year after a good start to conference play. I don't see that happening this year and Niko's exceeded all of my expectations up to this point though.

My heart says the best option but I think past experiences have obligated me to pick the second best option.

I'm getting close to being worried about him being one and done, so that shows you where I lay.

"What I'm starting to pick up on is the fact that the Bulldogs make the other team cooperate through commanding the tempo. On top of that, they are forcing the opponent to open their defense with long 3's and taking advantage of them when their defense extends. Fun to watch."
"Another very fun game to watch! Team is so relaxed and having fun."
"Confidence is growing, amazing turnaround. Kudos to coach for instilling the confidence."
"Drake is fun to watch for the first time in a long, long time! Crisp passes, no ball hogs, decent defensive fundamentals."
"This is such a huge win. Unbelievable. I was jumping up and down."

The quotes above? They're from our message board at this time last year. Obviously things changed.
Can this team win in MVC? Well, they won 5 of their first 9 last year so I'll go with yes (+WSU is out of the mix)
Do I think Medved is the right guy? Based on what I've seen so far...ABSOLUTELY.
Do a few of us have our head out in front of our skis? Probably.

I get it...this is a message board and wild swings in emotion ranging from on-the-ledge to full-blown koolaid drinker are a fact of life (Exhibit A: I bought in last year at 5-4 and did a road trip to see the purple pimps work over Griff's boys)
All else equal the litmus test to me is when these teams get to see D the second time. All else isn't equal given size and other attributes, but based on what I've seen so far, Medved is in the top tier of MVC coaches. Hopefully he can keep the team one step ahead of the MVC, particularly when Feb and Mar roll around and what works the first time around may not the next time.

I agree that it'll be interesting to see how they do the 2nd go around against teams.  Hoping for the best!!!  Would be great to see them not play on Drake Night.

Way to *smack* me with a cold dose of reality, Darth!  But, you are right, of course.  Interim Coach Rutter turned it around for a short spell before the wheels fell off again.  Its irresponsible to assume it can't happen again.  You've brought me back to cautious optimism.  On the flip-side, anyone who is still in the "Abyss" has clinical depression separate from this message board and needs to seek immediate psychotherapy.  DU fans have every reason to believe the DU future is bright under Niko.

Are you talkin to me?

If you want something really ugly, look at the posts during Giac's first dozen games, when the team was looking pretty up. Lots of positive comparisons, particularly of him to the previous regime, Of course, most of us were pretty mixed to negative on the Giacoletti hire and then briefly looked wrong...Medved's track record with program building (despite his weak overall record) is decently established.

I'd like to point out that I was the first person to speak positively about Niko as a candidate so if he is indeed a good hire then I am taking all the credit.

Agreed with the fact that its early and everything could go wrong. However, this feels different. We've played some truly awful games, but came back strong. We've seen tremendous player improvement in McGlynn and even Timmer. I'm well aware that everything could turn into Rutter part II, but I don't think so. We'll see soon enough. In the meantime, I'm enjoying this because there hasn't been much to enjoy in a long, long time with Drake basketball.

Rutter's temporary success was likely the result of a fortunate schedule early on in MVC play.  The easiest home games were frontloaded.  And, once teams figured out what Drake was doing, they adjusted easily.

What's different this year is that after opponents adjusted to Drake's new offensive scheme, Niko went back and tweaked everything, and the offense is rolling again.  In game adjustments and in season adjustments are things we never really saw from the two previous coaching staffs.  I'm all aboard the Niko bandwagon.

So I have an acquaintance that I found out has had season tickets at Furman for years. He was a member of the roundball club there so he got to know Niko pretty well. He’s been following the Bulldogs from afar and had this to say to me...

Same blue print he used for us.
He inherited a team with a bunch of SRS. Then his first real class are now SRS for us.
We start 3 SRS guards.
Then A 6'5 number 4 with ball handling and 3pt skills,,
.. and at the #5 6'8 Jr from Illinois.Matt Rafferty.
He leads us in rebounds ,assists, steals ....and leads our conference in FG pct, and 2nd in the conf in rebounds.

We are first in the conference right now and have won 8 of 9. Only loss to UTenn in Knoxville by 5 points. They were ranked top 25 at the time. Game was tied with minute to go. By the way Wofford in our conference beat UNC ChapelHill and GaTech already this year....and we have a 5 point advantage above Wofford in Sagarin right now.

Niko saved our program. You are in for a fun ride.

What Niko is doing is beyond amazing. A whole lot of people around the country
are going to hop on the Niko bandwagon as the season goes on. Drake better be ready to come up with more $$ to keep Niko because I think a lot of schools are going to come calling.
I would hate to see another one and done ala Keno, especially with the recruiting class Niko has coming in.

Amen Matt. I know the Raffertys. I begged the previous regime to give a scholarship to Matt but they didn't...and his brothers went to D! Big Mistake.
Medved doing wonders.

Pretty tough not to be on the bandwagon.  Minnesota is also my big concern. Even as stoked as I am about Niko, I'm not sure this season ends up being one and done material. It might actually be best if Pitino does get fired this year, as opposed to 2-3 years from now.

Just DU it !
