Anyone else SUPER underwhelmed with the University division this year? Felt like it was the worst I've seen it in the eight years I've been going. I wonder if a number of them dropped off when Brian Brown left.
I'd be curious how much the Relays Director has to focus on getting Olympians there, but for me I really judge the caliber of the event by the University teams you are able to bring in too. It felt like some B1G and Big 12 teams to go along with the Dakotas, and not even the cool ones, just the close ones.

I also think it's ridiculous that Drake can't field a better track team than Indiana State. Is UNI constantly that much better just because they have the UNI Dome? It's always pretty embarrassing that we rarely win any heats at our home meet (even though we own that distance race on Thursday night when nobody is watching).

I agree re: University division. I can remember when SEC, PAC12 (then 10), and a smattering of ACC teams would show up. SEC is now hosting their own event the same weekend (probably more than a coincidence).
IMO, we have to upgrade our facilities and marketing of the event. I think removing the block party from downtown Dsm is a huge mistake, if your focus is on community engagement.

I watched the relays on TV and thought he same exact thing. Back in my tears at Drake the relays would draw: Baylor, Stanford, Oregon, Arkansas, etc.....huge track schools. I actuallyed checked out their schedules and all the "big" schools were at other meets, some very tiny. Hopefully this is not a new trend. I do wonder if all the recent years of bad weather are affecting the schools choices.

I do think it's a new trend, but I don't think it has anything to do with the weather.  Cheaper to go to a smaller meet closer to home.  College competition at Drake has been going downhill for 35 years.  I wonder if it's the same at Penn.  I know that Penn has a lot more top high school athletes, and colleges can use that to help their recruiting.  No recruiting advantage to be gained by coming to Drake.

Interest in track and field has been going way downhill for years (kinda like horse racing, boxing, etc).  The only reason good crowds come out is because there are hundreds (over a thousand?) kids from in-state running in the meet, and family and friends buy tickets.

I'm repurposing this thread for the 2018 edition.

I got to attend the Friday events. Good time seeing the pole vaulters and a new Relays record...fun stuff to watch. The weather held (nod to Paul Morrison doing his job talking to Mother Nature about this).

Wonderful to catch up with Put, DUB, and the Marine while I was in town (Marine, extra props for the connection you made to an old classmate's family)

I also got a photo with the resident rock star on campus  A-LISTER
Relays is a great weekend. I hope several of you got a chance to enjoy it.
