Interesting that the news was announced by Brian Brown, and not by Sandy. Not sure if that means anything.

I think Brian handles the hiring of the tennis coaches, so I probably wouldn't read into that much.

Interesting that our last women's coach was an assistant at Ohio State before coming here and the new coach was an assistant at Cal State Fullerton. A bit of a step down in terms of pedigree. But Coach Koz on the men's side came from UAB and he's doing well, so I guess it doesn't really matter the size of school. Just don't know what to expect yet I guess.

So, Williams win conference #4 singles. She is listed as a sophomore, so this begs the question one more time, that a number of us were asking...where was she last year?? If she was hurt, no one said a word. Or, was the coach that blind?

Tennis,

Saw in the paper this morning that Drake has signed Kelsey Neville, of Antioch High School to a LOI for Women's Tennis. Her record seems mediocre and her ranking in Illinois is in the 20s. She is a two star recruit.  Her school plays in Class 1A, the small class. On the positive side, she took 6th in the state tourney this year and last year, as a junior, she took 4th.
How does this seem to you, Tennis?

She will likely play at the very bottom of the lineup, unlikely to be a program-changer or anything. No midwest states are great at high school tennis, so even those who win their state tournaments tend not to be at the very top of the lineups on good teams. That's why so many teams in the midwest recruit abroad as well, because it is tough finding elite talent around us (and the elite talent in places like California and Florida want to stay there for outdoor sports like tennis. A bit chilly up here!)

Not really sure what the plan is w/the womens team.  I believe Kenya was a 4 star recruit but it's kind of odd she's still playing #4 singles.  Honestly thought when she was recruited she would be our number 1 player.  Wichita was the dominant womens program and w/them leaving it's very very weak.  Dogs are pretty weak at the bottom of the lineup and don't really have a #1 at the top of the lineup you need, though she is a good player.  Coach has brought in his daughter from Roosevelt and it looks like she has really struggled since she's been here.  Like Tennis said, most of the top teams, like our mens team, are dominated by foreign players.

finished regular season at 15–5 (5–0). I am not familiar with women's college tennis, but since Creighton is their only real notable non-conference win I am assuming they will need to win the tournament (Missouri State hosts).

There are seven teams (Stony Brook joins for the tournament) so I think they get a bye (#2 vs. #7, #3 vs. #6, #4 vs. #5).

Creighton is not a notable win in tennis.  They will definitely need a win in the tournament to get in.  Probably have to beat Mo State again down there to get in.  If healthy should win this thing, and probably be cannon fodder in the tourney I hate to say!

Yeah, Creighton is notoriously horrid at tennis. Which is weird because they are so good at all the other sports they field a team for.

Disappointing result as the #1 seed.  Our women have not been good in the postseason in tennis, unfortunately.  We had just beaten them I believe the week before.
