Now that Relays are over, thought I'd offer my opinions and see what others think:

I think we need to add something to Monday for a full week of activities. Not sure if a high jump in a Hy-Vee store is the answer, but something.

Moving Wednesday's Pole Vault back inside was clearly a good idea. Not sure if Capital Square is the best venue, parking can be disastrous and an unnecessary expense if you don't work/live downtown. Personally I'd like to see it go back to Jordan Creek, but Microsoft won't be moving anytime soon & the event had outgrown the space by the time it was moved.

I watched the inauguration at work. I thought everything except the Flash Mob was great & what I expected. The Flash Mob was dumb and shouldn't have happened.

Rain put a damper on the rest of the week. Hopefully next year weather will be good. If some "Rio Olympic Rematches" can be scheduled that'd be a major selling point. It'd be even better if the Penn Relays could move to another date, but I'm dreaming here.

Finally, really liked the Hy-Vee Road Races moving to Saturday. Relays ends Saturday night period.

I ran into a couple student athletes I recognized in the Peggy's Tent. Glad to see they can have fun too.

Brian Brown does an excellent job with the Relays. Overall - weather aside - it was another great week. It's tough to compete with Penn Relays, and I do hope that future years see some of the traditional powerhouse track schools back at Drake. I remember Oregon, Arizona, Arkansas, and LSU attending in past years. The elite fields were great, as always. But the university division seemed a bit down this year.

SEC is having its own meet the weekend of Drake/Penn starting next year so the university division won't get any better. They had Arkansas come a few times with Bucknam (former UNI coach), now I am guessing it will be mostly just the B10 and B12 minus the more eastern schools that opt for Penn.

Maybe the weather led to some things not being done, but this Relays seems like less of a show than normal. Where were the big elaborate video intros for the pro events? Where were the fireworks? It just seemed to be a lesser event this year, in terms of spectacle AND the university field.

My friend and I take note of the big programs that visit each year (been doing it since 2009), and this year was definitely the worst we have seen in terms of cool schools. If we are going to become B1G and Big 12 schools only, at least get all the midwest schools in those conferences there in full force. Obviously getting Maryland, Penn State, Rutgers won't happen because Penn is so much closer. Why I didn't see more Oklahoma, Kansas, Oklahoma State and Kansas State this year... dunno. But they gotta be there. And then snag some Pac12 schools to go along with Utah.

Seemed like the pro field was announced later than usual this year. Might just be me, or maybe the pros were less certain of their schedules in an Olympic year. Also possible that the sponsorship situation wasn't certain. The Hy-Vee extension wasn't announced until April (obviously might have been reached before then, what do I know).

Having Garth Brooks in town this weekend seemed to take away a lot of the local hype. Between that and the weather (they've had really good weather for the last three years at least) I didn't really hear any local talk about going over.

The best university teams are going to go where the best prep runners are (use it as a recruiting trip). The best prep runners are at Penn, not Drake.

Drake has no plans to invite elite out-of-state prep runners. The reason is simple. The reason the Relays sell out every year is because every Iowa kid who runs in the Relays probably has 5-6 family members/friends in the stands. The more out-of-state runners = less Iowa kids running = less tickets sold.

you could have an out of state division in addition to an Iowa division, and have those who won the Iowa division compete in the out of state division. If you limited it to the 10 or so closest states, it might INCREASE attendance.
