Earl F. Martin, J.D., Executive Vice President, was appointed in July 2010. He is responsible for several administrative, operational and business support operations, including admissions, disability services, the equal opportunity office, faculty and mail services, student financial services, plant and construction services, purchasing, information technology services, human resources, and the bookstore. He served as dean of Gonzaga Law and Texas Wesleyan Law (now A&M law). We're going all in on being the Gonzaga of the midwest, but with a track meet, it seems...

President-elect Martin was identified by the Board of Trustees as an engaged leader who will bring to Drake a passionate commitment to the liberal arts and professional education; experience enhancing diversity; a deep understanding of excellent teaching, learning, and scholarship; a collaborative leadership style; and a vision for positioning the university to thrive in challenging times. was Air Force JAG Link

The new president's first day is fast approaching. Aside from vital agenda items, such as exempting men's basketball players from the 2.0 GPA eligibility requirement, what can we expect from Marty Martin? Drake currently operates sort of an engineering junior college for Washington University in St. Louis. Engineering students can begin at Drake, then transfer to Wash U to finish their degrees. Some people say engineering is a passing fad...but I disagree. Wouldn't it be worthwhile for Drake to flesh out its own engineering programs? Engineering is worthy of not just a major, but a standalone school with multiple majors. And while we're at it, let's eliminate --or at least refocus--the (mostly undergraduate) School of Education. Why is a university charging $43,000 per year granting bachelor's degrees in education? Let UNI train our kindergarten teachers. Drake has made progress with journalism, getting it out from under the goat circus known as the School of Business and Public Administration. Hopefully the business school can regain accreditation soon. Your thoughts?

LurkingDog (6/19/2015) Drake currently operates sort of an engineering junior college for Washington University in St. Louis. Engineering students can begin at Drake, then transfer to Wash U to finish their degrees. Some people say engineering is a passing fad...but I disagree. Wouldn't it be worthwhile for Drake to flesh out its own engineering programs? Engineering is worthy of not just a major, but a standalone school with multiple majors.I agree. I'd love to see an Engineering program at Drake. With Drake's new focus on STEM subjects, engineering would be a perfect fit. And while we're at it, let's eliminate --or at least refocus--the (mostly undergraduate) School of Education. Why is a university charging $43,000 per year granting bachelor's degrees in education? Let UNI train our kindergarten teachers. Lots of Des Moines area teachers go to Drake for advanced degrees. I think Education is one of only three areas in which Drake offers a Doctorate. Drake recently signed a contract with the Des Moines public schools to allow teachers to get a Master's from Drake for free or at a greatly reduce price. link. I can't see how the Master's and Doctorate programs could continue to survive without an undergrad program. Drake has made progress with journalism, getting it out from under the goat circus known as the School of Business and Public Administration. Hopefully the business school can regain accreditation soon. I believe the Business school is still accredited. The accreditation they lost was some kind of additional accreditation that only a small percentage of business schools had.

I also see the value in an education grad school. Regarding the B.S. degree: I can't help noticing that the most highly regarded schools of education are grad schools only. "The Drake of the East" is one example. BTW, they obviously used a time machine to steal our school motto, so Drake was probably the pioneer in pedagogy. Just a theory...

Quick estimate count says there were only about 35 BSEs given out but over 200 ed school MAs last year. That seems like the appropriate focus. I would agree with those who'd like to see Drake push more into engineering. It particular would make sense with the STEM center. Wonder whether adding a Spanish minor starting this fall means there is some reconsideration over the DULAP/Certificate approach. Not sure the money's there to bring back a language department outright though.

gonna be a long time Drake CBPA has officially entered the process to regain AACSB accreditation. The AACSB notified Dean Terri Vaughan on August 5 that the application to begin the process has been accepted. There are number of steps to complete, including submitting information and undergoing an onsite visit. The entire process will take until at least December 2016. The actual time frame will become more clear next spring.
