As the Drake football team nears the conclusion of its first week of spring practice, the Bulldogs had scouts from the Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings stop by Friday evaluating senior-to-be defensive linemen Andrew Asbell (Machesney Park, Ill.) and Dain Taylor (Highlands Ranch, Colo. )

Sounds like they will be two players to watch next year.

I mean it did take four officers, mace, and a tazer to bring down Asbell in July so you'd have to think he's strong enough to make it in the NFL. I jest of course, everyone makes mistakes, hopefully he will have learned from it because it looks like he's clearly got a skill set that makes him a distinct possibility to play professionally and that can only benefit Drake University and the football program.

Left tackle Will Rackley of Lehigh is getting positive preseason press. I believe he'll be matched up against Asbell on Sept 4th.

The roster currently lists Asbell about 20 pounds lighter than the weight claimed by the press release...no doubt much lighter than he'll be in September. If he hasn't lost his agility, he'll be something to watch.

Also the press release and roster don't agree on his position, which I think will be DE.

My comment on Asbell at DE is based not only on the roster, but also on the possible need to replace Walkup.

It's unclear whether Walkup will be medically cleared, plus he's married now. It's all downhill once you're married.
