I would be in favor of at least expansion to 68 teams (or more in favor of going back to 64 if it does not expand). It has always bothered me that the bracket was unbalanced. You should either have 4 play-in games or none.

If it does expand to 96 teams (which from the articles I read seems possible) the rules should be....

Automatic Bids
1) 2 bids per conferences - 32 conferences, 64 Bids
2) Conference tournament champion gets auto bid and bye - gives incentive for regular season champion to play hard in tournament
3) Conference regular season champion gets auto bid - if same as tournament champion, than conference regular season runner-up gets bid to put meaning on the regular season

At Large Bids
1) 32 total teams
2) Must have winning record
3) Must meet two of the three requirements: have 20 overall wins, have .500 conference record, be ranked in the top 96 in RPI's
4) No conference should be allowed more than 2/3 of conference in tournament.

If we are expanding to allow more mid-majors who deserve to be in the opportunity to play, I'm in. If it is to get 14 Big East teams, 9 Big Ten teams, 10 Big Twelve teams, 10 ACC teams, 10 SEC teams, and 8 Pacific Ten teams, I'm out.

Expansion to 96 very likely will happen, money is the reason IMO. I doubt any significant changes are made to the at large process. The concern for the Valley is scheduling better opponents. The BCS teams have no upside to scheduling home and away with Valley teams, unrealistic to expect that to change.

Need more arrangements with the better mid major conferences. Want to be an atlarge? Its who did you beat. Wins over other NCAA teams are the most important criteria IMO. Out of conference wins over bottom 200 teams don't help.

The selection committee made choices based on wins against NCAA teams and SOS.

Schedule up or win the automatic bid.

One choice is left off of the poll: ALL teams

End March Sadness: Let 'Em All Play

"I say it's time to let 'em all play. All 330-odd NCAA Division 1 schools should have a ticket to the Big Dance...I know what you're thinking: That would take forever. In fact, it would take just two additional games to expand a 64-team tournament to a 256-team tournament. If you factor in byes, that's no big deal."

Gottleib (ESPN, brother of former Bulldog) just said leave it at 64, but force the last 4 at large teams to play in play in games for the last 2 spots. I like the idea.

Can't imagine it going to 96. Would give the committee another excuse to play all the mid-majors against each other.

Keep as is.

The expand to 96 vs. leave it alone with 65 is a question that will be answered by money and only money. Here is the landscape:

- The current CBS March Madness TV rights deal is 11 years long and worth about $6 billion total. The existing TV deal expires after the 2013 Final Four, but following the 2010 Final Four the NCAA has the right to opt out of the current deal. This would end the current deal two years early, as a point of reference those two years represent about $2.3 billion in broadcast rights fees.
- Why would the NCAA opt-out? ESPN has expressed great interest in the March Madness rights and due to their dual reveune stream (ad sales & carrier fees) they have extremely deep pockets and can afford to outbid CBS. About 90% of the total yearly NCAA reveune comes from the March Madness broadcast rights.
- The NCAA wants to increase the broadcast fee, but in all reality in the current format the fee has just about reached its max. Thus, in order to secure a higher fee the only choice is to add more games, thus increasing the commerical inveotory for the broadcast network to sell.
- What happens if the NCAA opts out of the existing deal (this means that the tourney will probably see more teams)? ESPN is probably prepared to bid for the rights & CBS is going to put up a fight for them. Given that ESPN can easily outbid CBS, CBS is exploring taking on a cable partner for the rights. In all likelyhood the CBS partner will be TNT. TNT brings deep sports experience to the table (NBA and NASCAR) and like ESPN they have a dual revenue stream. From what I have heard, Round 1-Elite 8 would be shared between CBS/TNT with the Final 4 and Champ game alternating each year between networks. Which ever network carries the Final 4 and Champ game will pay for 60% of that years righs fee with the other network paying for 40%.

Lastly, the current rate for a national 30 second commerical during March Madness - Early rounds $100,000 Champ Game $1,000,000.

I think to get an at large bid you need to finish better than .500 in your conference. Too many BCS schools play cupcakes to pad their win total and then play mediocre in the conference and get a bid.
