Iowa has a press conference today at 2:30. The Hawkeye boards seem convinced that Lickliter is gone. If that's true, it'll be interesting to see who they land after running off their last three coaches, and paying Lickliter $2.4M to go away. Given the record of ex-Iowa coaches, whoever hires Lickliter next is going to get a great coach.

| Lickliter out as coach, gazetteonline
"Barta met with Lickliter for about eight minutes this morning, starting at 9 a.m. Lickliter, who greeted a reporter on his way to the meeting, walked to the men’s basketball suite 10 minutes later. Within five minutes he walked out of the suite and went in an opposite direction from reporters."
Maybe he was running instead of walking in the opposite direction...knowing he had $2.4 mil in his pocket??

| I think Barta has a very difficult job ahead of him. Dr. T was fired so Alford could take the team to the "next level." Alford was successful in this and was fired for it. Lickliter was hired and took the team to another "next level" and now he is being fired. How in the world is Barta going to find someone who can take the team to another level below Lick? Tough job indeed.

With a #3 seed in the East region, Alford should be sending a thank you card to the Hawks for firing him...

Didn't Stevie lead Iowa to a 3-seed in the NCAA's one season? And lose to Northwestern Louisiana in the first round?

05-06? They were second in the B-10. First NCAA in 4 years after bowing out in the NIT 3 strait.

It was Northwestern State. And I called that upset. One of the most fulfilling tournament moments I've ever had. |

| D Fast (3/15/2010) My first suggestion for Iowa's new coach: Tom Abatemarco
Ron Maly had something about Abatemarco on his blog today.
Jay Christensen sends word that former Drake basketball coach Tom Abatemarco is being considered for a job on Kevin O'Neill's staff at Southern California. Abatemarco was at Drake during some of the darkest times in the university's basketball history. Scott Wolf wrote, "USC coach Kevin O'Neill was on KCBS-TV's post-selection Sunday show in Los Angeles. Two of the names being floated for the remaining assistant coaching position are former Drake and Sacramento State coach Tom Abatemarco and former Boston Celtics assistant coach John Carroll. "I'm considering a lot of people right now,'' O'Neill said. Abatemarco lasted less than two seasons at Drake. His record in 1988-89 was 12-17. He was forced out of the job in early-February of the 1989-90 season. William F. Reed of Sports Illustrated, in a story headlined, "Mutiny On the Hardwood," wrote: "On Feb. 6, Drake players announced that they would no longer play for second-year coach Tom Abatemarco, who they say treated them abusively. To strengthen their case against him, the players alleged that Abatemarco had given them free access to the school's telephone WATS line and free gym shoes to sell, and that he was aware that assistant coach Tom Butler had written school papers for some of them. The next day university vice-president Jack Ohle announced that Abatemarco would be reassigned until an investigation into the charges could be completed. He was replaced by assistant coach Eddie Fields." Drake was 13-18 under Abatemarco and Fields. They were replaced by Rudy Washington in the 1890-91 season. Washington went 8-21 in his first season and didn't have a winning record in the next five

| Gary Barta needs to get this one right, or he'll be looking for a job. Lots of Iowa fans mentioning Keno, and suggesting he wants the job. Not sure I'm convinced.....when he left Drake he said it was his dream to go back "home" to the East Coast. I would expect him to have somewhat of a sour taste re Iowa and the way his father was shown the door. Iowa's options seem somewhat limited, and if this hire doesn't pan out, Iowa is going to be considered where coaches go to die (or at least lose)....should be an interesting week or two!
On my command......unleash Hell
Are you not entertained??!!

Unless UI makes him an offer he can't refuse, and they won't, I can't see him wanting to get the rep as the coach who will leave any program for a big check. He will stay at Providence and try to build his own reputation.

| If it helps the black/yellow, it probably hurts the blue/white....I don't believe in the 'rising tide floats all boats' philosophy when it comes to neighbouring schools. Hopefully the folks in Iowa City get it wrong (again).
