This was reported on the Jacksonville University athletics site.

I wouldn't expect a bid until such time as the playoff field increases from this year's 20 teams...to 24. And maybe that will happen by 2012 or so.

This is a significant announcement, because the PFL had previously chosen not to be considered for an automatic bid.

Commissioner Patty Viverito (also commissioner of the MVC Football League) had been so adamant about not applying for a bid...I wonder if this signals that she is on her way out with the PFL.

Don't know if Patty V is on the way out or not, doubt that it much matters. With what they could pay they are only going to get someone who already has the job for another conference to do it. That will always come with the proviso that they work their full time job first.

Also, remember Patty V wasn't the problem in the past. She was doing what the institutions president's wanted her to do. Perhaps with the changes in membership their view has changed. Perhaps the failure of any sustainable D1 non-scholarship division to come to fruition has caused folks to re-evaluate how we should consider playoffs. Perhaps winning 3 of 4 Gridiron Classics and watching the NEC pick up an auto bid opened a few eyes. Perhaps the attention garnered by a certain central Iowa basketball team a few years back (and the subsequent increase in applications) made the case for a little higher profile.

All good points. But she publicly made the analogy that a PFL team in the playoffs would be like putting a I-AA team in the Rose Bowl. As recently as two years ago, you could find her quoted as saying PFL teams couldn't beat scholarship programs and shouldn't even schedule them. I find it hard to believe that the school presidents wanted their commissioner to say any of that.

Maybe she isn't "the" problem. Maybe she's her own problem.

I think this would perfect if it was true. I am also still in the mindset that we should work out some additional postseason games similar to the gridiron classic with lower level FCS/non-playoff FCS conferences. Realistically we will only get one bid to the playoffs, so our champion would be the only team to make it. What makes football meaningful for most DI schools is the possibility of postseason eligibility.

PFL Postseason Suggestions
1st place: FCS Playoffs (Host TBA) vs. TBA
2nd place: Citrus Bowl (Hosted By Florida A&M University) vs. SWAC
3rd place: Presidents Bowl (Hosted By Penn University) vs. Ivy
4th place: Harbor Bowl (Hosted By University of San Diego) vs. Big West
5th place: Gridiron Classic (Hosted By Jacksonville University) vs. Gridiron
6th place: Patriot Bowl (Hosted By Liberty University) vs. Big South

Six may be too many, but these are just suggestions. You obviously would not have big bowl payouts like FBS. The funds raised from gate/merchandize would go to pay the costs of teams traveling. Exceptions would be given to the host school if they qualify and they would play at home regardless of place. If you work it out right, at least 1/4 of the teams would be playing at home. I only figured out the PFL configuration, but all conferences involved would play each conference once like a mini tournament. It would only be one game for each team, which would allow the Ivy league not to play during finals and the SWAC to keep their rivalries.

Your idea resembles the old College Division bowl system the NCAA had in the 60s-70s. Drake played in a couple of those bowls.

I don't think we'll see anything like that in FCS football.

Yeah, but it would be fun to see. It would reward players and keep fans interested which is ultimately the goal

Division 2 has some bowl games for teams that don't make it to the playoffs like the Mineral water bowl.

As a loyal Clay County resident who supports local events, I've been to a MWB or two. Lately, it's been played the same day as the Gridiron Classic.

Exactly...all it takes is a little organization. By my logic above, Drake would have played an Penn in the Presidents Bowl this year. That would have been a fun postseason match-up. A trip to Philadelphia would have been nice!

Here are some others I found.

Division II
Dixie Rotary Bowl - Saint George, Utah
Pioneer Bowl - Various locations
Kanza Bowl - Topeka, Kansas

Division III
Aztec Bowl - Toluca, Mexico
Knute Rockne Bowl - Atlantic City, New Jersey
Oyster Bowl – Hampton, Virginia

After thinking about this again, I would do it this way. Now all we have to do is persuade the higher-ups.

My new suggestion....

Citrus Bowl (at Jacksonville, FL): PFL vs. SWAC
Gridiron Classic Bowl (at Staten Island, NY): Northeast vs. PFL
Harbor Bowl (at San Diego, CA): PFL vs. Great West
Presidents Bowl (at Philadelphia, PA): Ivy vs. PFL
Hall of Fame Bowl (at Montgomery, AL): SWAC vs. Big South
Pecan Bowl (at Houston, TX): SWAC vs. Ivy
Raisin Bowl (at Davis, CA): Great West vs. SWAC
Freedom Bowl (at Charleston, SC): Big South vs. Northeastern
Boardwalk Bowl (at West Long Branch, NJ): Northeast vs. Ivy

That would be 9 games (18 teams from) 5 conferences (49 teams) that receive limited or no guaranteed FCS playoff bids.

Rules....

1) Received FCS playoff bid, go to FCS playoffs
2) Remaining teams chosen by conference order finish
3) Must have .500 record or better (only one game vs no DI - FCS or FBS - opponents counts in total)
4) If conference cannot fill spot becomes at large
5) Pairings are completed by geography (if host school qualifies they play at home) - trying to match the teams so games competitive also should be considered.
6) Profits from the Bowls will go to pay for expenses...if all expenses paid, the remaining profits split between the conferences.

2009 Match-ups would have been...

Citrus Bowl (at Jacksonville, FL): Jacksonville vs. Prairie View A&M
Gridiron Classic Bowl (at Staten Island, NY): Central Connecticut State vs. Dayton
Harbor Bowl (at San Diego, CA): Drake vs. North Dakota
Presidents Bowl (at Philadelphia, PA): Pennsylvania vs. Butler
Hall of Fame Bowl (at Montgomery, AL): Alabama A&M vs. Stony Brook
Pecan Bowl (at Houston, TX): Texas Southern vs. Brown
Raisin Bowl (at Davis, CA): UC Davis vs. Marist (at-large)
Freedom Bowl (at Charleston, SC): Charleston Southern vs. Albany
Boardwalk Bowl (at West Long Branch, NJ): Wagner vs. Harvard

The Drake vs. North Dakota game would be out of the region, but hey San Diego would be nice in December. The rest of the games would have one team within driving distance (six out of the nine games would have host schools).
