I picked up a very flattering article dated February 2 written by a fella named Loren Tate from near Champaign.
I don't think I can copy it to drakenation. It looks like it might come out in Tuesdays Champaign paper.

Loren Tate has been reporting on University of Illinois athletics for a long time (I remember him from when I was a kid). I'll be curious to see/read the article.

What this board will NOT like about the article is his implication that Rayvonte should de-commit to be closer to home and play in the big ten. Way out of bounds. YOu guys will go nuts.

Here is a chat they had that mostly talks football where Jim and Loren say Rayvonte made the right choice in Drake. Like Rayvonte needs their freak'n approval, right?

"Dave C., Champaign, IL: Guys,

Couple questions about Sat's Shootout at the Hall. What would you estimate the attendance was for Centennial/Waukeegan? Do you think the Big Ten Coaches missed out on Rayvonte Rice? He reminds me of Sergio McLain, short for the 3 spot, but enough of a bulldog to pull it off. Do you think anyone made a jump in front of the recruiters there?

Moderator: Dave, the attendance number we have is 3,000. Rice is very good but there is only so much room. Did Weber "miss" on Verdell Jones? Did Weber miss on Jay Simpson? Only time will tell. Weber made the right choice at the time the choice had to be made. We think Rice made the right choice by choosing Drake. Jim and Loren"

I assume that is the same Loren, right? (almost half way down the page) ---- linkage

What a ridiculous article. Just to clarify, has Rayvonte signed a letter of intent with us yet?

Wow...an open article practically begging for someone from Illinois to 'tamper' in this situation and asking a student to de-commit to a school of choice. That seems pretty low. I also agree there was a lot of 'waste' in this article (I doubt this is in Mr Tate's "Top 10" of written contributions) both literally and figuratively.

I do know this: I saw the Illinois AAA final last year where Rice came up clutch and I was impressed. I look forward to seeing him at D.

This guy is a Fighting Illini homer to the max. Talk about the ultimate compliment to Rayvonte! Still, I find this article to be biased and unprofessional. Maybe there is more to the story as to why this guy would write an article that most will view as a possible tampering violation. He is either real tight with Weber or he is telling the public that Weber sucks as a coach. Don't know which it is but I can't wait to see Mr. Rice next year. The Big Ten has been losing ground for years and this type of journalism is nothing new. He knows nothing about Drake University. He's still pissed off Bradley knocked Illinois's Richard in the dirt to start the season. Loren Tate, write a story on what sour grapes taste like. Ya prack.

Here is what I submitted ... doesn't look like the old fart is going to list it the comments section. -

"Mr. Tate, I can understand your frustration but to crawl this low? I'd think a man of your character and experience as a professional journalist wouldn't allow you to use these types of unethical tactics. This article reminds me of some young east coast putz that wants to create controversy for free pulicity. Two things come to mind, 1)You are very close to Weber and this can be viewed as a tampering violation, or 2)You are saying Weber isn't a very good coach. Which is it? You should write an article on what sour grapes taste like. By the way, what is the Fighting Illini's record against the Missouri Valley this season? You know nothing about what is best for Rayvonte Rice and you know nothing about Drake University. Though the article is a compliment to Mr. Rice, it still shows a mentality that is ruining college athletics."

I hope Mr. Tate's Depends diaper leaks all over the place today. What a cheesy, slime ball, prack.

Here is another response that someone else wrote ... I'm sure it won't show up in the comments section either. -

"Tate-
I just read your post on Rayvonte Rice. Let me help you with something. The
reason you had difficulty sleeping was not your excitement about Mr. Rice's
ability. The reason you cant sleep is because your outlook on life is
screwed up and your subconscious knows it.
You spent 1/2 your article creating bogus rationale for this young man to
break his word. You supplied him with all kinds of ideas aimed to corrupt
his morale fiber.
The reason schools like Illinois were not his choice is because people like
you have gone there and their methods of manipulating young people's minds
is not appealing to him. Thank God this young man had the wisdom to run from
programs with boosters who have no desire to help him grow as a human being,
rather just TAKE from him. In my mind he is way beyond your ability to
understand what's truly important in life. Your commentary shows that you
are a small person capable of only using others for what they can bring to
you.
I'm glad you spelled out your moral shortcomings for him to read. It will
only serve to cement his decision. Good luck with your approach. It's
probably cleaver enough to work on most the losers that end up as Illini."

I'm not trying to be a wise guy, but you do realize that in order for your comments to show up in the comments section, you have to register and submit it as a comment. If you e-mail it to him, it's not going to show up in the comments.

Here is a link to an Illinois message board discussion about this article....

To their credit, there are several posters on there saying that Tate was out of line with this column.

I love this one -

"I have a coffee cup at work that says "I'm a lawyer, not a magician." The waivers in the cited cases don't seem to have been contested and didn't appear to be the result of tampering or interference, formal or informal, by any of the players, the schools involved, their families or "posses." In this case, if I'm the Drake AD, I clip 'n' save Tate's article as my Exhibit #1. Athletic departments have lawyers, too -- even Drake, which by the way has a pretty well regarded law school."

The funny thing is, I emailed a link of the article to a friend who is a judge in Illinois. He basically said the same thing.

The waivers for Jake Kelly and Tyler Smith were granted because a parent with recently died or was recently diagnosed with a terminal illness.

The whole column was bizarre. Reading it was like listening to an elderly relative who just says whatever pops into his head.

Here is another comment that urine smell didn't post in the comments section -

Dear Mr. Tate,

Thanks for the kind words about what a special player Rayvonte Rice is. We Drake fans can't wait to showcase him, along with two plus years of other stellar recruits (that in my estimation, will have Drake performing at a level higher than the majority of the Big Ten in 2-3 years from now).

Something strikes me about your article though. We live in a world of scandal. We criticize "kids" for incredulous lack of judgment that jeopardizes their athletic eligibility. How on earth will any of that ever change or improve when they are exposed to or guided by the unethical musings or "advice" of a "respected" sports columnist such as yourself?!?

If the NCAA wants to crackdown on recruiting violations…maybe looking at coaches is looking in the wrong direction. Maybe they ought to be looking at the grass-roots crap you are attempting to stir up in this article. I honestly can't believe some of this stuff that you are spinning off as advice…or in your insinuation (directed at Rayvonte) that he ought to be having second thoughts?!?!? Honestly??? Have you ever read an actual letter of intent? Do you know that once an athlete has signed, that they forfeit a year of eligibility if they don't complete their first year with the school they signed with? And to suggest that all he needs to do to avoid such a penalty is to claim that he'd like to be close to Mom??? That's not "hardship"….are you kidding me?

I am surprised. Surprised that someone of your tenure and experience can somehow justify such an adolescently immature suggestion that Rayvonte has somehow made an ill-advised choice. Commitment, and values, and fit….they mean something. Might you walk away from your wife because some flash-in-the-pan hottie told you she'd be "more fun"…and that you'd made a mistake by being committed to her??? Worse yet, find me a respected advisor that would tell you that you should! That's what you've done here.

I, for one, am so glad that Drake has done such a great job in recruiting a kid with the moral fortitude not to be phased by this ill-conceived attempt to get him to question his decision.

When I read or hear of Illini recruiting scandals…past, present, or future…I'll now always wonder what role you might have played in it.
