| Today, Knapp Center, tip-off is at 2:05 p.m.
Here's the short blurb from the DMR about the game: http://www.desmoinesregister.com/article/20100108/SPORTS020404/100108028/1097/SPORTS/Saturday-s-Drake-women-s-basketball-game
The Wichita Eagle has nothing on this game at this point, which is not all that surprising because they are owned by McClatchey, the same company that owns the Kansas City Star, Sacramento Bee, and a whole host of papers that used to provide good coverage of women's sports. McClatchey has been slowly going broke, and as it has, it has let go the writers who specialized in women's sports. But it appears that McClatchey no longer has anyone whose primary beat is women's sports in the Wichita (or Kansas City) area, let alone a writer who covers mainly college women's hoops during the season. They had no preview of the Creighton/WSU game that was played earlier this week in Omaha, and their short article summarizing the game was written by "Eagle Staff" -- which means they had no one from their paper at the game.
Newspapers are dying, and a lot of the good coverage of women's sports has disappeared from them. Geezers like me are distressed about this, but it is a fact of life. What is taking their place? SOCIAL MEDIA. Espn.com at the national level. Blogs at a national, regional and local level. Twitter -- great for very timely information "bites" (but not for posting "old news" like a victory that happened 2 days ago). Facebook -- more local though you can find teams from all over the country with pages on their now. And yes, Discussions Boards -- national (e.g. rebkell for women's hoops), regional (e.g. hoopscoop for the Big 12), and local, like this one. A short anecdote about how twitter and discussion boards can be used to promote women's hoops: A friend of mine who is a very good sportswriter by profession has a blog, and when she updates the blog, she puts out a tweet with the url and a short note about the topic. She does not post on discussion boards, but she knows that between her tweets and the people who just "check-in" on her blog periodically, someone is likely to post it on some discussion board somewhere. And they typically do, which then drives more readers to her blog. And this is how she gets her blog stories about women athletes heard. These are stories that probably would not be told were it not for her efforts, and often include features about women athletes, some of whom are famous and others that are not, that would not otherwise get told. But in the end, they all help support the idea that women can achieve great things through sports.
It's cold out, but the sidewalks around Knapp appear to be in decent shape. We need to win this game, and while we come into it with a better conference record, RPI and strength of schedule, Wichita State has some reasons to get fired up for a win, including the fact that they got thumped by Creighton on Thursday. Let's go Drake!

| This team should know exactly the mind set of WSU since they had to go to Indiana State just last Saturday after taking a bad loss at Illinois State on Thursday afternoon.
The big question for the Bulldogs after Indiana State was which team would show up game in and game out. The team that is sharp, focused and playing with energy showed up for the MSU game. Veteran players provided leadership in their example and willingness to take control of the game when necessary.
I'll be there ready for tip off. |

What does Drake do with social media? I know there's a generic athletics Twitter account that has game and score updates for a lot of sports. There's also a generic athletics Facebook account, but Drake doesn't seem to do much with it. Coach Stephens has a Twitter account with lots of "big game today" and "big win yesterday" type of tweets. Anything else?

Some of the sports have weekly blog postings by players and coaches:http://www.godrakebulldogs.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=15700&KEY=&ATCLID=3761508&SPID=8128&SPSID=586053

| | There is a Drake Women's Basketball page on Facebook, but it has been sporadic in it's activity. Of course there are only 24 fans, so it may be a chicken & egg thing until there are more fans following it. |

| I'm not sure how many Drake fans know there is a Facebook page for women's hoops; I found it through a Facebook friend, who is local. One thing is for sure -- information travels very quickly on Facebook. And it's not just for high school and college students anymore.
Here is an example of a facebook group about women's hoops. It's a group called "I played 6 on 6 basketball in Iowa" and is open to any fan of the 6 on 6 game. A friend of mine invited me to join this week, and it has 2,156 members as of this writing. http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=53656214263#/group.php?v=wall&gid=53656214263

| Lots of good points in this game, not perfect, but got the win w/o turning it into a nail biter.
Really good minutes from Steph Running. Rachel picked up 2 early fouls and had to sit. Steph really stepped it up and played well when we needed her. She collected 10 boards. I'm impressed by how well she moves her feet, that usually takes post players a while to pick up. She runs the floor well and was wide open for the play at the end of the first half, but no one noticed before the defense recovered.
Brittnye played much better today than against MSU. She looked much more comfortable on the floor with the ball in her hands against an in-your-face D. Have to keep reminding my self she really only had a handful of games last year before she was done for the year so she might have the traveling and college experience thing under control, but only has a touch more game time than the freshmen.
Jordan was solid all around and spectacular from the line 12 of 12. The team's free throw shooting was outstanding going 24 of 27.
The knock out punch was at the start of the second half when the Bulldogs went on a 15-2 run to put the game on ice. During that stretch things were firing on all cylinders and which ever 5 happened to be on the floor were working together well as a team. |
