Drake hasn't cancelled tonight's game (so far). Sounds like the bigger problem in town won't be the snow but the cold. So bundle up if you feel like it is safe to travel to the game!

Missouri State played both of its first two conference games at home and won both, beating Bradley 72-67, and UNI 90-80 (in what must have been a defensively challenged game :-)). They have two pretty strong offensive threats in Casey Garrison and Christiana Shorter, but are thin at the point guard position. We are their first MVC road game. Playing on the road is always hard, but I imagine the poor weather conditions will not work in their favor.

Here's today's coverage of the game from the Springfield News-Ledger: http://www.news-leader.com/article/20100107/SPORTS040101/1070378/Lady-Bears-hit-Valley-road. One of their players notes that they want to get our post players to commit fouls. Basketball 101 stuff.

The DMR's coverage can be found here: http://www.desmoinesregister.com/article/20100106/SPORTS020404/1070332/1003/SPORTS/Women-s-basketball-Northern-Iowa-Drake-at-home-for-a-change.

I know Ellie has a stress fracture, but haven't heard when she is expected to return. Brittnye should be able to play more minutes, giving us more depth at PG.

Let's go Bulldoggies!

DU wins 88-84. The few hundred fans who made it to the game got to see some pretty good entertainment. DU led by 20 with 12 minutes left, but MSU (or at least Jaleshia Roberson) caught fire and almost came all the way back. MSU had a few chances at the end to tie or take the lead, but DU's defense held. DU shot 31-56 for the game, and needed almost every shot. DU was also a pretty good 22-27 on ft's, but MSU shot ft's even better hitting 18-20. Hackbarth had an amazing game with 28 points on 12-14 shooting. Plummer was also pretty good with 21 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists. MSU's Roberson dominated the game with 36 points (including 7-14 on 3's. Turk missed the game (ankle sprain I think). Herrick returned with a couple of uneventful minutes, and Ritscher scored 5 points in her return to action. McSparron also looked pretty good with 5 points in 14 minutes.

Here's the DMR's article about the game (thanks to Dan Johnson who came out on a very cold night to do his job): http://www.desmoinesregister.com/article/20100107/SPORTS020404/1080367/1003/SPORTS/Drake-women-s-basketball-Bulldogs-get-second-wind-to-win

Thanks for your summary of the game, Mecha. I can confirm that Turk sprained her ankle and is day-to-day. However, I am sorry to say that Herrick is not back as she is still recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery.

MSU has several offensive weapons, and the Bulldogs did a pretty good job of containing Garrison (who still had 16, but she was the leading scorer in the MVC coming into this game, so 16 is not a high point total for her) and a very good job of containing Shorter (who was singled out this past week on the MVC website for her offensive play). Roberson shot lights out from the 3 point range, and was hard for the Bulldogs to contain. But she should have fouled out of the game for her antics on the defensive end, and she didn't. I am discouraged that the MSU coach would allow the kind of poor sportsmanship that I saw displayed by that young lady last night.

Creighton won last night and remains the only undefeated team in MVC play. Creighton clobbered Wichita State last night on the Jay's home court.

The Drake Bulldogs are in a three-way tie for 2nd. We play Wichita State on Saturday at the Knapp Center.

Whoopsie on Herrick. I didn't remember her playing last night, but her name appeared in the box score so I figured I must have missed something. MSU has a history of unnecessarily rough play, so I wasn't too surprised by Roberson's antics. Creighton looks like they're clearly the best MVC team right now. They didn't look impressive in non-conference (unless you consider not getting blown out by great teams "impressive"), but they're just steamrolling everyone right now.

Great win by the Bulldogs. Must have driven Amy nuts to have MSU claw their way back into the game, but they did what the needed to do to win. In the pre-game the scout said they wanted to limit MSU's 3-pointers, trips to the free throw line and keep Garrison in check. Not so much on the 3-pointers, good job on the free throws, Garrison only had 6 in the first half which is a pretty good job on her and still kept her down in production below her average.

Looks to me like the scouting report really had Shorter figured out. She was POW in the MVC after last weekend and she was a non-factor last night. I noticed our D sagged way off of her when she was on the perimeter, I'm guessing she has no long range shot and only scores off the dribble. Good job on that front.
