| ELMHURST, Ill. - The IUPUI basketball team has been pegged to finish third in The Summit League preseason poll, according to the league’s coaches, media and sports information directors. Oakland garnered 34 of the 35 possible first-place votes to take the top spot while Oral Roberts edged the Jaguars by four points for the No. 2 spot.
South Dakota State was picked fourth, followed by North Dakota State, IPFW, Southern Utah, Western Illinois, UMKC and Centenary.
"We’re excited about what we’ve got here," IUPUI Head Coach Ron Hunter said. "This is the time of year that everyone’s excited and everyone’s optimistic, but I really like this group of guys. They work hard and want to improve everyday.
"We’ve got three seniors that want to go out as winners and there’s a lot of depth up and down this roster."
Oakland guard Johnathon Jones was named The Summit Preseason Player of the Year and was joined on the first team by Davis Baker (Southern Utah), Keith Benson (Oakland), Garrett Callahan (South Dakota State), Robert Glenn and Derick Nelson (Oakland).
The 6-foot-7 Glenn, who was named The Summit’s Top Newcomer in 2009, averaged 13.9 points and 5.4 rebounds per game while swatting a team-high 50 shots in 30 games. He also hit 61 percent of his field goal attempts and 72 percent from the foul line.
In Summit League play, he upped his output to 16.7 points and 6.1 rebounds per game and scored in double-digits in 18 of the team’s final 19 games of the season.
Four other Jaguars that started at least 15 games a year ago also return.
Sophomore swingman Alex Young averaged 10.8 points as a freshman, marking the top scoring average by a rookie in the program’s Division I history. He was also the top scoring freshman in The Summit and also averaged 3.5 rebounds per game. Also returning on the wings is junior Leroy Nobles, who averaged 9.9 points per game and hit a team-high 41.7 percent from three as a sophomore.
Up front, seniors Jon Avery and Billy Pettiford both return.
Avery averaged 9.2 points and a team-high 5.9 rebounds per game and shot a school record 67.9 percent from the floor. He also ranked second on the squad with 21 blocked shots. Pettiford averaged 5.0 points per game and registered a team-high 74 assists and 32 steals from his forward spot.
IUPUI’s crop of newcomers is led by freshman point guard Greg Rice. The 5-foot-11 Rice was a two-sport standout at Ben Davis High School and earned First Team All-Marion County and AP Honorable Mention All-State honors a year ago after averaging 18 points, three rebounds and three assists per game.
"Personnel wise, I think we’ve addressed some areas and built a really good core," Hunter said. "We’ve got some really good bigs, we’ve got some wings that can score and defend and a good group of guards.
"We’re going to be tested before we get to conference play though. We’re going to learn a lot about ourselves, playing teams like Memphis, Notre Dame, Auburn and Kansas State."
IUPUI’s regular season begins on Nov. 14 when the Jaguars travel to Des Moines, Iowa to take on Drake in the opening game of the Glenn Wilkes Classic.
Just DU it !

| | IUPUI is always very athletic. Drake better not come out in the prevent offense & they better be able to rebound much better than they did against Upper Iowa. We should win if we play well but I'm not sure what to expect. Phelps is bringing in his kind of players, players who can play all over the floor, & even though we are starting 2 freshman, I expect better than last year. |

| It's killing me that I can't be at the game tomorrow -- stupid 1 o'clock start. Z, I agree that the rebounding has to be light years better than Upper Ia. If they don't board b etter this will not be pretty unless of course they can force a bazillion turnovers. I expect it will be a very entertaining up and down game. The only thing that can slow down Drake's young greyhounds is a point guard.
Tomorrow has arrived and the sun is up. |

| | Saturday night games aren't always possible. But it doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out that a 7 p.m. games draws a much bigger crowd. |

| | Let's go Bulldogs. Hoping both basketball and football teams are able to pull off victories. Neither game is going to be easy. IUPUI is a lot tougher than many people think. It could be a close one. |

| | DULawdog, McBulldog told me he will be at West End before the game. My son Jeff and I will either be at West End or across the street eating at the Mexican place. It is good. See you then! |

| You would think if they are going to schedule day games, they would try to make sure there isn't a huge Football game during the day.

| I'm curious if there is going to be a postgame show since both games are on the same radio station.

Three observations:
1. Didn't Templeton play power forward last year?
2. The story notes that Templeton has "grown" an inch since last year, and there's a little acknowledgment that the roster is inflating heights.
3. Phelps says "We need to play as much as we can in the open court. We're not built for the halfcourt. We're looking to take advantage of every fast-break opportunity we can." I'll believe they're a fastbreaking team when I see it. Of course maybe with YouTube and the Luxembourg Laser running point they might be a little more uptempo

| I really don't know what to expect in this game. I'm thinking the offense can't look a stagnant as it did last year. It got to the point last year where I was checking every game to see if we had 5 points by the ten minute mark in the first half. Wedel should help out the offense. A point guard who can shoot reallly loosens up defenses.

Young is out with a hip pointer after a collision in practice on Monday. He's out today, and sounds like he's day-to-day in the future.

| well..that sucked. But I really liked a lot of things that I saw. The offensive pace is much better except when Stanley runs the point. CS had a pretty good game, but the dude just can't really run an offense. His passes are weak and he really doesn't see the court well. But he brought some good drives to the hoop, I think he'll get some time, but I don't like him at the 1.
The freshman can score! If Josh Young were playing today they couldn't have played so close to RW. Overall, Drake looked pretty good - rebounding was markedly better, good shots, and generally good poise. We MUST have JY back though. Also the middle was weak, nothing to keep them from the scoring all day in the middle - that's troublesome. Also, IUPUI won't play this good the rest of the year, no way they shoot the three like they did today. Total bull****. The refs also really, really sucked in the second half - missing some easy calls.
I'd be more upset if the offense totally sucked and JY played. As long as we can get a decent JY back, I think we'll be OK. |

| Very encouraged by the offense, especially considering JY wasn't playing.
Very discouarged by the defense.
Very discouarged by the lack of adjustments defensively when 3 IUPUI players scored all but 4 of their points (until the free throws in the last 30 seconds). When your defense obviously isn't working, you might want to change it up.
