Last year was the first year I decided to take the plunge and get season tickets for Drake basketball. To help journal my experience, I created a blog called "Bulldogs Roundball" that I shared with some of my immediate friends in the DSM area.

Now that I have renewed my season tickets, I have decided to pick the blog back up again this year. Since I have also started posting here every now and then, I figured that some of the people on DN might find my blog of some interest.

I actually just completed a post that highlights our matchup against Upper Iowa on Saturday:

Feel free to use the comments and give feedback or other thoughts.

Some interesting things you highlighted. And thanks for the info on Upper Iowa. I'll keep tabs on your blog as the season progresses.

Dutl, I'm taking the liberty of pasting your prediction in this thread:

"We weren’t as good of a defensive ballclub as UNI was last year, tough to think that would continue into this season as well. We are probably more athletic, however, and that goes a long way when you’re mixing it up with someone from a lower conference. The speed of our newbies and a healthy Josh Young is really going to show on Saturday.

Drake 68, Upper Iowa 51."

I realize you are basing this on the UNI score, but if Drake can't score at least 80 points and win by 25-30 against this lower level DII opponent, I will be quite disappointed.

I understand where both of you coming from but I honestly could care less if we win by 1 or 50. I've always thought these games are kind of bogus. This year, with all the new men, is has a bit more appeal for me as we finally get to see the new guys in action.

Were you saying that 5 or 6 years ago when Drake almost lost to . . . who was it DUB? Simpson?

I agree if this were a veteran team, but with the freshmen this year, I think every chance to play college level talent (even DII) is significant.

Or three years ago when Drake lost an exhibition to D2 Winona St?

I'm not concerned about the score, but I hope Drake can win this easily. There are the things I'll be watching:

Is the offense working? I remember last during exhibitions we were in shock at how bad the offense looked. We were convinced they were holding back for the first real game against Butler. Turns out, the offense just sucked. Now that the team has a year under Phelps, the offense should look better.

Anything new on defense? A press, or something full-court?

How do the newcomers look? Can Wedel take pressure off Young? Will Wiseler be a contributor? It would be nice to see one of the freshmen score about 20 in this game.

Who plays point? Who plays center? If the posts struggle in an exhibition against a D2 team, that's a bad sign for the rest of the season.

I'm going to have to agree. Who cares... but yea losing to a crap team or beating a stellar team does add a bit of shine to the preseason.

Yeah, I was basing it on the UNI score. While I didn't write about it, I also feel like there's a certain level of "game rust" that needs to be shook off, which might make us a bit sluggish at first.

Either way, I just hope college basketball gets all of the "Le Moyne's" out of its system before Saturday night.

Thanks all for the feedback, looking forward to blogging a great season.

I also think you have to give the freshmen some time to get adjusted to the college level game. As such, I won't be too disappointed if the scores are a little closer than I would like in the exhibitions. I'm looking more towards the flow of the offense and type of plays that are being called.

I believe that Winona State team 3 years ago was runner up the previous year in the D2 national title game. But Preseason is nothing more than a glorified scrimmage.

Hopefully the chemistry between the youngsters is obvious and can help this team overachieve all year. For some reason chemistry on anyteam can make up for alot.

Great write up on the Upper Iowa game. Are we to expect such in depth analysis after each game? You're setting the bar really high!

Good call DULaw. As it turns out this ended up being my attitude. I also discounted the final score because of the very slow start, the 10 minutes or so when CS was on the floor and the O came to a screeching halt, and Upper Iowa's late spurt when the walk-ons were on the floor.

Dutl, I love your formulas. One little nitpick about this one though:

"4) Getting to the Line. This is basically how many free throws we make over how many field goals we attempt. Do we get to the line and make them? We certainly pushed the issue and got to the line a lot more than the Peacocks, making more free throws (16) than they attempted (7). That said, we shot 64%, so there is certainly room for improvement there."

Why are you comparing FTM with FGA for getting to the line? I think possessions and FTA would be a better measure of how well a team gets to the line.

I like all the stats too.....I'd love to see you discuss points per possession......when you boil it all down, that is the one stat that best measures both your offense and your defense.
