Interesting quote from the chat......Emmenecker was asked about Phelps....

I'm a fan. Phelps is an honest, down-to-earth, hard-working guy. The day I walked back into the gym after coming back from Germany, he came to talk to me, and the first thing he said was that HE made a lot of mistakes this year. He told me he learned a lot and was disappointed by the season but was encouraged by both his own and the team's progress. He works so hard recruiting and I think he has a great first recruiting class. Last year was a difficult year for a lot of reasons, but I see only good things in the future.

It takes a big man to say that. As long as people are able to learn from their mistakes, it's all good.

When I read that statement, I was both encouraged and concerned at the same time. I am encouraged by the fact that Phelps shares the sense of disappointment felt by fans and that he seemingly accepts responsibility for some of the problems that plagued the team last year. It is good to know that his perceptions are consistent with those of most people on this board. As such, as you indicated DUB, Phelps can learn from his mistakes and then build on what he's learned.

I am concerned, however, because I get the sense that Phelps is experimenting and is still in the process of developing an effective system. If that is the case, unless he's a quick study, the team, even with the great recruits he's brought in, may under achieve for the next year or so until Phelps finds or develops a system that works.

Despite my concerns, I am mostly encouraged and despite the team's performance last year, I have a really good feeling about 2009-2010. The fact that the players think highly of Phelps makes me a fan too.

The Bulldogs are Back.

You mentioned Phelps not really having a system. I think he's got a system (one that is a proven winner, too) The biggest issue is adapting the system to the personnel available. Throughout last season it became evident that Dr. Tom's personnel wasn't 100% cohesive with the system. (losing Emmenecker, Houston, and Korver hurt also) Unfortunately, making the best adjustments is the toughest thing for a first year coach to do. This was a valuable lesson to learn. Phelps is working harder in recruitment than any Drake coach, ever, and so far it has payed off. Adam's quote was really positive for me to hear.
Here is what I think we have going for/against us next year:
- lost our frontcourt to graduation
+ coach's improvement (that quote showed just how much coach wants to improve)
+ coach's recruiting
+ more length (especially good for the zone and getting good shots off)
+ really good backcourt (in skill and leadership)

Obviously, there will be a big learning curve with so many newcomers playing a big role. I am very optimistic about the progress we will make next season.

I'm not sure if I agree with this. The Bulldogs have some good 2's and 3's, but I'm not sure that they're above average at the point guard position. A lot depends on how much Stanley's game has progressed since last season. After watching him this summer, I'm not sure what to think about Wiseler's game. Smith does some things well, but it's hard to expect too much out of a freshman at that position.

i meant good as in better than last year. true, there are a lot of questions at point guard. However, we didn't lose anyone, and we gained Wedel and Frank. I don't know how much Wiseler can contribute this year. Wedel looks like a big asset to me. the leadership was referring to jy. Hopefully he will be healthier and a little less targeted because we have more talent. my judgement is clouded because i am an optimistic and enthusiastic fan. either way, the backcourt will be our strength.

Well, the 'dogs did lose Parker and Baryenbruch....hopefully, Wedel and Frank will be an improvement. Definitely agree that the guard court will be DU's strength. There is some talent on the front line, but it is an extremely young group up front.
