| 26 points on 8-14 shooting. 13 assists 9 steals 7 rebounds 2 blocks 2 turnovers
From what I saw, it looked like Judd scored the majority of his points in the first half. Once the other team started to double him... he became a distributor.
Great game Judd! |

| YTD Stats
Judd's YTD (through Friday's game) are: 16.3 ppg with 60% from 2's and 51% from 3's. 10.3 rpg. 7.8 assists per game, 3.6 steals per game, 3.0 blocks per game and .8 charges taken per game. Free throw percentage 82%. Also, 2.1 T/O's per game. Keep in mind, Basha's had several blowouts where Judd plays a half or less. Also, Judd generally takes the other teams BEST offensive scorer and is thus, Basha's stopper.

| Comparison to:
I got a call from a friend in coaching who has recently seen Judd play.
The coach is familiar with basketball in the state of Iowa.
He loved the kid.
I said: throw me a bone and give me a comparison to someone I know so I can get an idea of who the kid plays like.
He said:
He reminds me of Ben Jacobsen.
That would be awesome, wouldn't it?

| Judd had 10 in a 74-44 victory....the score was 49-17 at half, so I'm guessing he didn't play more than about half the game.

| Judd was one assist short of a triple double (4 of 6 shooting), along with 5 steals, 3 blocks, 2 charges taken and zero turnovers while playing only half the game. The starters did not play but a minute of the second half.
Basha finished 23 - 6 for the season. Second round of State is tonight (Saturday) at 7. They play the team that gave them their first loss of the season back at a Christmas tournament. Still having a LOT of issues with their "point" guard. He was dismissed from the team last Thursday (18th) then re-instated on the following Monday. Bad for team chemistry. We'll see how it goes tonight.
Good luck to Drake in a couple of hours!!

| Judd finished with 6 points (0-8 from the field), and his team lost 65-56 in the state quarterfinals. I'm hoping that a season-ending game like that will only inspire him to work even harder in the off-season.

| Judd ran point the entire game and their coaches goal was to pound the ball inside. It did not work. Through three and a half quarters, Judd had 3 (THREE) shots. As the other coach said in the article below, their main goal was to have Judd "run" the team instead of looking to score...
It was quite a site. The only player to be able to get the ball after they scored was Judd. He would be about 6 feet off the baseline with a 5'10 guard and a 6'3 forward hanging on him. He'd make a move to get free, get the ball and bring it up. One t/o for the game. In the second half, Chavez started running a third player at him on the inbounds. Finally, the inbounder would just throw it high and Judd would jump and get it then make a long pass to break the press, BUT, our guys never made them PAY for pressing. SO, picture this. We have our inbounder. Judd is 6 ft off of the baseline and the other three teammates would be on the other end of the court...
Judd ended with 6 points. He had 7 shots, but 4 of those were in the last two minutes and were desperation and were NOT good shots. So, your best player, even though he was responsible for breaking the press the WHOLE game, only gets THREE shots...!!!
He had 9 assists (at least 12 more, that were blown, lay up type assists) 9 rebounds, 5 steals (GREAT site watching a 6'5" kid strip a 5'10" kid at the top of the 3 point line, repeatedly), 6 blocks (2 were at the rim - SPECTACULAR) and he took 2 charges in the 4th quarter. One was where he was defending (almost stole the ball) at the top of the 3 point line, then you see a flash of a kid go to the block and there's Judd on the ground having taken a charge. He had 1 turnover. Against the heaviest of pressure, Judd came through.
Doesn't matter though. It's Judd's team and they lost, so it's on Judd - that's how he feels, and I feel horrible for him. He had tears mixing in with the sweat at the end of the game. NOT tears of disappointment but tears of TOTAL frustration!
Judd WILL indeed work, relentlessly, in the offseason...

Add Buddy Re: Basha vs. Chavez question Reply
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is the first time in school history a Chavez basketball team made it to the Final Four. Congratulations to Coach Gary Lee and his band of hearty warriors, as for the most part, they had to overcome a soft schedule to turn up the terror. I'm referring to their suffocating, trapping defensive pressure on defense. It was on full display last night.
Both Basha and Chavez came out hot from the perimeter in the first quarter, as they combined for six treys. Basha surprised Chavez by opening with a 2/3, perimeter zone, but Chavez shooters didn't hesitate from beyond the arc. The pace overall was electric, with blocked shots and scintillating passing. The same excellent crew that did the Mountain View/Chavez matchup, David Alvarez and Ricky Peters, let them get into a flow. The Bears 6-foot-8 senior forward Brelan Berry hit three baskets on transition, while 5A Desert West Player-of-the-Year senior Chavez point guard "Downtown" Brandon Brown connected on three treys. Basha held a two point lead entering the second quarter.
In the first four minutes of the second quarter, Chavez hit three more treys (Brown, Marcus Barnett, and Trayvon Brnes) to wipe out a Basha six point lead. Senior point guard Javon Taylor was doing most of the damage for Basha, while junior sharpshooter Judd Welfringer was literally fighting with all his strength to get the ball through Chavez's back court traps. Coach Lee told me after the game: "Our game plan was to wear Welfringer down. We wanted to get him so busy running the team that he wouldn't be able to think about scoring." He got off maybe three shots in the first half. A big difference for Chavez was the return of center Hagne Kisima, who missed Chavez's overtime loss to Mountain View last week. He was wearing a big knee brace, but his presence inside kept Basha's twin towers, Berry and 6-foot-8 freshman sensation Torren Jones, from controlling the boards. Chavez pulled off a 9-0 run, capped by Brown's trey, and the home crowd was rockin' in the rafters. The Bears freshman point guard Jaron Hopkins hit a big trey, and Chavez went into halftime with a four point lead.
The third quarter was decisive, as Chavez turned all of their defensive weapons loose. Basha scored only one FG, and a had a total of three points in the entire quarter. Twice, the referee had to hesitate handing the ball inbounds to Basha, and warn the Chavez defenders who were harrassing Welfringer front and back. The other Basha guards were never a factor due to Chavez's backcourt blinding speed. Chavez enjoyed a 13 point lead entering the fourth quarter, and Basha's shooters were clearly rattled by their inability to even get close to the paint with the ball offensively.
Basha was able to make a brief "run" by hitting some free throws, and Chavez's 6-foot-5 junior Todd Pink fouled out with 3:17 to go. Chavez got scoring from four different players down the stretch to show their strong depth, and maintained a double digit lead throughout. The final was 65-56. Leading scorers for Chavez were Barnes (11), Brown (24), and Barnett (14). Taylor (11) and Jones (16) were tops for Basha. Chavez free throws were 20/33, while Basha hit for 14/21 in the game. Overall, Chavez really "bodied" up the Bahsa big guys, as Coach Lee noted postgame, "make them pay a price when they faced the basket". Chavez's pressure defense forced Basha to take a lot of low percentage shots in the second half. The Chavez/Mountain View rematch will be a dandy, especially with the return of center Kisima. Congratulations to the Basha team for a 24 win season.

| Thanks for that info.....the article that I linked to seemed to suggest that Judd had to expend so much energy just dealing with the pressure defense (bringing the ball upcourt) that he just wasn't able to get real involved in the offense. Sounds like he had a real good overall game, other than the shooting.

| In Arizona there are 7 divisions for basketball, broken up by size of school. 5A1, 5A2, 4A1, 4A2, 3A, 2A, 1A.
Basha is 5A1. I think the distinguishment for the largest division (5A) is greater than 3,000 students in the high school.

| Judd's club team, the AZ Stars, are in Newport News, Virginia playing in the Boo Williams Invitational (42 Nike sponsored teams from across the U.S.). They played the Wisconsin Nike Team tonight (Friday night) and won 75 - 62. Judd had 26 points, shooting 9 for 12 and he had 7 assists. He is playing the 3 spot on this team. He played point for the last three years.
They play at 11 am and then at 9 pm tomorrow and then two games on Sunday.
Last weekend, they played in the Southwest Showcase in Phoenix, AZ and went 5 and 0, winning the tournament.
