I can't read this story, but it looks like Drake has a verbal from Judd Welfringer, a 6-4 junior-to-be wing from Basha High School in Chandler, AZ (a Phoenix suburb). He had 13 ppg, 8 rpg, and 6.5 apg last year.

| Here are couple little tid bits from the article. -
Chandler (Ariz.) Basha sophomore guard Judd Welfringer had begun to see his recruiting stock rise of late and had recently received his first DI offer from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
Welfringer makes it official today at Drake.
Welfringer took an unofficial visit to the Midwest heartland this weekend and ended up committing to coach Mark Phelps and his staff.Welfringer is fast becoming a top prospect in Arizona from a very loaded 2011 class, and the fact he has committed early could lead to other top programs to continue to recruit him moving forward.
So, how solid is this commitment from Welfringer? "Extremely solid. I made a commitment, this is final," said Welfringer.
Time will tell if this commitment is solid as a rock, but it appears Welfringer has his priorities set in stone for where he wants to play and get a free top-notch education at the next level.

| We haven't seen a Phelps recruit play a game yet, but the best thing is that he is getting recruits he WANTS and getting them early. That hasn't happened since pre-Rudy days.
Don't pass up the shot. |

That didn't happen pre Rudy either.

| | I think more than anything is that Phelps is showing that he can recruit players on a national level as well as from the midwest spefically. Now, I have no idea if the guys he's getting to commit to the school are "high" level players, but you have to admit, its probably been a long, long time since we've seen players commit to Drake from states like AZ, AR and VA. |

There have been others out of Arizona JCs. I think the difference here is he's from an Arizona high school. Sounds like a great kid, exactly what Drake looks for.

| | I agree. It does sound like this kid has his head on his shoulders. I think that he'll be a welcomed addition to the team in 2011. I am also glad that from a recruiting standpoint that Drake is able to recruit on a national standpoint regardless of whether its at the high school or junior college levels. It goes to show that Drake's name is out there as a viable option for kids that want to play basketball and get a college degree. |

| I can't find a lot about him, but this sounds like a good get. He put up pretty good numbers for a young kid, especially considering he wasn't the star of his team. It seems like his recruiting was just starting to pick up, with Utah showing a lot of interest and some BCS schools starting to notice him too. I look forward to following him for two years.
I gotta give Phelps credit for taking the long-term view of the program. He signed the 2009 class right after he arrived (except for Clarke, whose scholarship didn't open up until after this season). Now he's working on kids who won't be on campus for another two years. Drake has had pressing needs, but he's stayed away from high risk or low ceiling players who might make an immediate impact in favor of quality high school kids who match his style. And he hasn't been afraid to take on players who have to sit out a year (Wiseler, Wedel, Clarke). Phelps is doing a great job building a program the right way with an eye on the future.

| Drake only has one player in the junior class (Wedel).....so, this guy will be DU's only recruit for that class unless somebody leaves.

| Here's a link to a premium article.....link
I'll give some quotes for those who can't read it....
This kid is the complete player on and off the court. Not only is he a coach's dream on the court, he currently pulls a 4.2 GPA in the classroom.
Drake is not the only school in pursuit of his services. Utah has visited twice in the past three weeks and he is also hearing from Oklahoma State, Washington, and some top academic institutions.
Welfringer has a very solid sized body for a combo guard (6-foot-4 and growing, 180), and plays the game with an extremely high IQ, and with power rarely seen in players his age.
Welfringer was also recently named Co-MVP at the Southwest Showcase Academic All-West Camp held at Grand Canyon University.
While many players look for points on the board, Welfringer has different ideas. "I want to set the state record in assists," said Welfringer.

Thanks for the link. Not great hops, but as he matures, he should become more explosive.

Welfringer has a teammate, incoming freshman post Torren Jones, who already has a scholarship offer from Arizona. His team should be very good for the next couple of years.
