Here's an article from a U of Illinois site that mentions his visit to Drake.

link

Plenty of Division I colleges think Rice has the talent to back up his ambition. The Centennial standout now has offers from 16 Division I schools with his newest offers coming from Nevada and TCU. Other offers on the table are Illinois State, Oregon State, Drake, St. Louis University, Akron, Detroit, Wagner, Kent State, Loyola, Miami (Ohio), Ohio, Virginia Commonwealth, Western Michigan and Eastern Illinois..........Rice traveled to Des Moines, Iowa, on Wednesday to visit the Drake campus......"It was pretty nice," Rice said. " I liked it."........Rice said the three schools that are sticking out right now are Nevada, Drake and Ohio.

He also mentioned that he's probably going to wait to see if any of the BCS schools that are following him offer him a scholarship.

Some of the high-majors calling Rice include Missouri, DePaul, Boston College, Cincinnati, Indiana and Penn State. The stocky guard said he'll likely hold off on making a commitment until the high-major programs decide if he deserves a scholarship offer........."(The high majors are) just going to see who else commits first then offer probably," Rice said. "Some of the high-majors are recruiting me pretty heavily."

thanks DUB. i think Rice's attitude is very common for the quality of player Drake is offering, wanting to wait to see if a BCS school offers. Hopefully the young man will realize that Drake is the best place for him even if a middle-conference BCS school steps up.

Everything I've read seems to suggest that he's a "fallback" guy for the BCS schools, but a high priority for mid-majors. Might as well go where you're really wanted. Even if he gets a BCS offer eventually, he probably wouldn't be looking at a lot of playing time, especially his first 2-3 years. At Drake, he'd be in the mix immediately. Nobody on next season's team will have more than 1 year experience at the D-1 level.....playing time will be wide open.

Drake is fairly close to home (5 hour drive), but not too close, which is a good thing for a young man going away to college. His family would have an easy drive to a lot of Drake's road games.....Illinois State, Bradley, SIU, Indiana State, Evansville.

Academics are good.....location is good......Drake really wants him......he'd be in the mix for playing time immediately.....Drake sounds like the perfect fit.

According to this article, David Smith used to live in Champaign, and briefly attended Champaign Centennial. I wonder if he and Rayvonte Rice knew each other growing up. I'd love to see 2 big, physical guards like Smith and Rice in the same back court.

From ilprepbullseye.com.....

Rayvonte Rice, the 6'3 class of 2010 forward from Centennial High School in Champaign, IL completed a campus vist to Drake University this past week and there is no question that the Bulldogs remain at the forefront of his recruitment. However, we still believe that it will be a while before Rice is ready to render a decision, as he has already said that he plans on taking at least a couple of other visits.

Don't be shy, Rayvonte.....make the plunge. Be the first commitment in a great recruiting class.

RR would be great.
Jeremy Jeffers was in last weekend with Karl Madison.
I hear JJ is close.
Once the first domino fell, it's up to others to grab a scholarship while one is open for their position.
If Rayvonte doesn't commit today, I'm guessing his spot won't be open by Monday.
Wow! We are on the verge of something really special.

Lots of great talent considering Drake, only three spots left!!!

Staying on the subject of Drake, Bulldogs head coach Mark Phelps conducted a home visit with 6'3 class of 2010 forward Rayvonte Rice from Centennial High School in Champaign, IL tonight. Weinstein tells us that Kent State, Ohio University, Nevada, St. Louis and Illinois State are all schools that also remain in the hunt. Drake already has two commitments from the class of 2010 including 5'10 point guard Karl Madison from Lanphier High School in Springfield, IL and appears on the verge of a banner class overall.

Two commitments????????????? Maybe they think Welfringer is a 2010 commitment...or maybe there's somebody we don't know about yet.

appears on the verge of a banner class overall

Yep....even folks with no connection to Drake know that this is going to be one fine recruiting class. Rayvonte, wouldn't it be great to be a part of that? There's no question which direction Drake basketball is headed. And that's up.

After all of Drake's recruits are in, I want to see electricmayhem's article about how Drake has the best recruiting class in the Valley for two years running.
