| Hey All:
There's a lot of talk on the Bluejay Cafe about trying to land decent games with BCS schools. Looks like Indiana State just got a game with Louisville and is pursuing a game in Indianapolis against Michigan State to recognize the 30th anniversary of the Bird-Magic NCAA Championship match (see ValleyTalk).
Anyway, if there were some way to actually put together the UCLA-UNC-Purdue tournament in Des Moines (or maybe even completely neutral site like Chicago or Kansas City) for the upcoming season, would you pull the trigger?
Building confidence with light non-conference schedule versus toughening up versus the best?
While I recognize that it is pretty unrealistic, I can't seem to let it go because it would be so totally COOL! Imagine lowering some banners and honoring Dolph and Willie McCarter in that atmosphere! On national TV! Des Moines would be the center of the basketball world that weekend.
Would UNC and UCLA be interested in getting a shot at each other early in the season on a neutral court?
What would it take to make it happen? Money? More money? More than just money?
How would you like Drake to schedule the non-conference in the upcoming season?

| | I would love to see that tournament happen. Unfortunately, I don't see any chance of it happening. Schools like North Carolina and UCLA will usually only play non-conference games away from home if it guarantees a national TV audience and a huge paycheck. Neither of which Drake could provide. Every game those teams have to play on the road is a huge revenue loss for them. |

| | The only reason Drake's non-conf schedule has become an issue is because ISU and UofI's programs have hit the fan. I don't think the big programs you mention would ever come to a tournament in Des Moines. For 2008-09 I am hoping Drake's success will get them invited to a higher profile early season tournament that includes some good BCS programs. That plus a home game with Butler are enough of an upgrade for next year IMO. |

| Magic v. Bird was memorable for many reasons. The biggest reason was they were playing in a national championship game. Third place teams don't generate as much nostalgia, so I don't see your dream tournament happening.
My schedule wish list includes UMKC (for us alumni down I-35 apiece). And how about Northwestern for the Chicago fans? St. Louis U?...you get the idea.

| | Hey kids, listen to this. My freshman year our non conference schedule included (besides Iowa State twice) San Diego State, Minnesota, Temple, St. Bonaventure, Georgetown, Purdue, New Mexico State and Air Force. Sophomore year was Northwestern, Minnesota, Colorado, Michigan State and Idaho State. Junior year was Minnesota, Iowa, Michigan State, Memphis State (before they were in the Valley), Holy Cross and Valparaiso. Senior year was Minnesota, Iowa (twice), Colorado, SMU, Texas Western (the prior year's national champs) and Oklahoma. In 67-68 and 68-69 we played the likes of Minnesota, Oklahoma, Valpo, Nevada, SMU and Marquette. Not bad, huh. It can be done. |

| Wow. What a schedule.
Wow. What a memory! I don't remember what I had for breakfast today!
Was it 2 or 3 years ago that Dr. Tom had us play a tough pre-season schedule and then was questioned about it some because of the many losses and loss of confidence? I don't think I am dreaming this up, but it is certainly possible.
Stand up and Sing!
Here's to the one who wears the "D",
Makes a good fight for Varsity,
Here's to those who've fought and won,
Makes a good fight as a true Drake alum,
Here's to the one who's brave and bold,
Ready to battle like days of old,
Fights like a bulldog for victory!
Oh, here's to the one who wears the "D"!

| | Just drop the Division III team they play at the start of the season and develope a home and home series with a St.Louis, DePaul, Marquette, Dayton, Xavier type...Butler comes to Knapp next year, Iowa and ISU should be better, there should be on road tourney with a guarentee payout and another bracketbuster (at Knapp). Throw in the two home tourneys with a couple of decent opponents like Duquesne was and you've got a decent eleven game schedule that's not too tough but representitve of the quality of team Drake should have in 08-09. |

| | Dog 67: I remember that kind of scheduling well and it was great but the basketball world has changed drastically since that time. In the 60's the BCS/mid major dichotomy didn't exist, money and TV had yet to change the whole fabric of college sports and Drake played most/all (depending on the exact time frame we talking about)their games at Vets which was a large venue for the time. I do think that we can slowly change our schedule for the better but it will take some time. We will still be faced with the unwillingness of most BCS programs to play home and home with a "mid major" But maybe something like St Maury suggests would work. |
