I am just curious if, in the recent past, Drake has discussed adding baseball. Drake is the only MVC school without baseball and college baseball is fantastic. My kids grew up going to WSU baseball games, playing catch with me on the outfield hill, sliding down to the outfield fence on pieces of cardboard, cheering the Shockers, talking to the WSU pitchers who were warming up, chasing (and sometimes getting) foul balls, yelling at the umps, etc. Baseball is a wonderful college sport and it is cheap (compared to football). Anyway I'm just curious.

I didn't make it back to Iowa to give a lecture and watch WSU play Drake; considering the outcome, I'm glad I didn't make it. My visit to Des Moines and to Drake in 2006 was very pleasant and I hope to return; the Drake students and faculty were very nice. I hope a few of you come to WSU and watch a weekend series of baseball on campus. If you are at least 21, I'll buy you a beer at Eck Stadium. Next weekend for me will be running http://www.math.wichita.edu/MAA2007/index.html rather than baseball.

I've never heard any discussion about Drake bringing back baseball.....I don't see it happening any time in the near future.

It's been gone for 30+ years now, so only the old-timers even remember that Drake ever had a baseball team.

Baseball would just mean that they would have to come up with yet another women's sport to give away scholarships. Baseball is pretty weak this far north, and it would be particularly difficult to compete here. Iowa State had a decent baseball program, and they dropped it. I never hear about Iowa or UNI doing much of anything. I see no reason for Drake to divert resources to Baseball.

Don't pass up the shot.

Drakey: With the new uniform start date http://hawkeyesports.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/spec-rel/011106aab.html, do you think baseball will become more popular in the north?

If Drake could get donors to support the new sports (e.g. baseball, women's sports), this might increase Drake's undergraduate enrollment. I think enrollment is an issue for Drake (but I might be wrong). I know some NAIA schools have non-scholarship football and soccer essentially to maintain or increase enrollment.

As much as I would like to see Drake have Baseball program or a Wrestling program, I don't think that it will happen. In regards to your comment regarding the increase of students to Drake that other sports might have (if they were offered at Drake), that isn't likely to happen.

In January I went to the Drake 125th Year Birthday Party and President Maxwell indicated that this years entering freshman class of 788 was the largest that the school has had in the last 10 years. Several of those in attendance asked if the Drake was interested in being a larger school (student population wise) and his response was that Drake's ideal size per class is in the 750-780 range.

As far as how this would apply to Drake adding additional sports, I don't see it happening. My personal belief is that even if Drake had donors who were willing to put up substantial amounts cash to help increase Drake's profile in athletics, those funds would be used to enhance the current programs and not create or bring back new ones.

Prof, I saw some of the Shocker-Indiana St. series last week and had a blast.

Yeah, the uniform start date is good. But, it's still THE FIRST OF FEBRUARY.

If you make it to Eck again, look me up and I'll buy you a beer (you have to bring ID). Section F, Row 1, Seat 14.

I missed a few WSU games (Nebraska, Creighton game on 4/7) but I'll be at the KSU game on Tuesday and the UE games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Drake fans are missing a great sport; college baseball has bad umps ( ), good players, future stars and players who represent "your school." I hope some of you get a chance to see WSU play this year. Say "hi" if you come to Eck Stadium.

I started in the fall of 1978 and it had already been dropped.

College baseball is not a revenue raiser. It costs a lot for the team to travel. Drake has the minimum number of D1 sports to remain D1 eligible. This is common for lots of small private schools. Drake has a track team, which many other small private schools do not have. I am guessing that baseball gets the stiff-arm due to the existence of the track team. That being said, it is a shame.

Thanks, JC!

1971 was the last year.

I was told the Men missed too much class.

Drake didn't have softball back then, but to answer the enevitable question:
Why then do we have softball?
1. title IX
2. women are generally better students than men.

Tough to admit it but those are the cold hard facts.
