Let me be clear...I would love to see us schedule UNI...It would expose the guys to speed and strength...First game I saw at Drake was against UNI...still can not believe the speed.

Probably better off trying to get a PL or Ivy.

I have nothing against non-DI schools...I support a lot of them in Iowa, but if you truly want to be seen as a DI institution, you need to play DI schools in all sports.

I still think a 9 game conference schedule with UNI every year would be best. That gives you 10 games and depending on the year you only have to schedule 1-2 more games a year. Do two year contacts with home and away series with a Ivy, Patriot, Northeast, Great West, Big South, SWAC, etc. team (similar to Lehigh or Montana State) and you have the schedule.

I'll add a vote for Grand View. The downside is their NAIA status and the accompanying image problem for some people.

But an annual game for the championship of Des Moines would build fan support.

Without getting into detail, I can say that D-II teams are reluctant to schedule nonscholarship FCS opponents, because they are penalized when it comes to at-large playoff consideration. The NCAA actually has written guidelines for computing D-II non-conference SOS. As such, I would not expect perrienial playoff contenders such as Northwest or UNO to play the Bulldogs.

How about Northwest Missouri State? They are close, a great program, and they would bring a lot of money as they have a decent amount of alumni in the area. The downsides would be the Bearcats don't schedule FCS teams and they would probably run away with the game.

I also agree playing Ivy League schools would be great!! I was not saying don't play Ivy league schools, was just hoping to make the UNI game a traditional rivalry.

I personally think the PFL should play a true round robin schedule. We would then only need to find two non-conference games. One could be UNI and the other could be an Ivy League, Patriot League, Northeast, etc school. This would make the schedule fairly competitive and make non-conference scheduling easy. If you only have to find one team per year, it would not be that difficult to play all D-I schools.

Darmouth just hired Don Dobes as their defensive coordinator. He is originally from the South side of Chicago. If called upon, I would gladly try to schedule a game with either Darthmouth or Princeton. Farthest Princeton has gone in the last 3 years has been to the Citadel. Only plane trip they have taken in that time period.

Navy did not defeat Notre Dame for 44 years. Iowa State did not beat Iowa for more than 15 years. It is not about being able to win every game. It's about honoring the rivalry and stepping up to the challenge. And of course enjoying the upset if it does happen.

BTW, Dartmouth freed up space on its schedule by discontinuing its series with New Hampshire. They haven't beaten New Hampshire in about 30 years.

A few Ivies have also played NEC and other eastern teams. And they've played San Diego for the California recruiting exposure.

I think Ash was trying to negotiate something with Dartmouth, but with the coaching changes, it slipped between the cracks. Now Dartmouth will play Butler home-home in 2012/2013. Why was our AD unwilling or unable to follow through?

I would agree that for the most part the only other conference in which the Ivy League schedules games is the Patriot League but things may be changing . Some of the Patriot League teams -most recently Fordham -are now offering athletic scholarships . The Ivy League is not happy with playing against scholarship teams and many of the Ivy teams are considering expanding their scheduling beyond the Northeast.
In reaction to Fordham's decision to offer athletic scholarships for football-- Harvard's football coach Tim Murphy in an article published in the Harvard Crimson September 18,2009 was not pleased with Fordham's decision
" Realizing the national clout that the Harvard name carries,Murphy is looking to expand the field of competition beyond the Northeast for alumni and recruiting reasons. The University of San Diego is just one of the new names on the Crimson's upcoming schedule "
Maybe somebody from the Drake Athletic Department should at least contact Tim Murphy or coaches from other Ivy schools Hope springs eternal -nothing ventured -nothing gained

While schedule against a team you know is going to run away with game; i.e., UNI came within a last second field goal of beating Iowa last year.

Becasue they are a rival and good competation. Plus, it would be a series that actually drew fans and made money for the program.

I would also like to see an Ivy League team visit Drake. However, I want this poll to be more than a beauty contest. So, how would you get them here? DJOM basically said they don't want to spend the time or money to come here, and I agree.

I would particularly like to hear from those who say they don't care about seeing (insert boring team here). How would you fix the situation?

I would love to see an Ivy League school but realistically, it is not going to happen. Ivies don't seem to want to schedule outside of immediate area. Patriot seems to make most sense. Why schedule against a team you know is going to run away with game; i.e., UNI came within a last second field goal of beating Iowa last year. Conversely, why schedule against a team you know you are going to beat up. Look at our opener last season; 40 kids suspended and we still ran away with it----teams get stronger when faced with similar or slightly better talent.

If it is "wishful thinking" to consider Drake playing against teams from a non-scholarship -high academic standards conference like the Ivy League then maybe it is time to ponder the current status of Drake's Football Program. Would the Bulldogs be better off in Div 3 or dropping the program completely ? I hope not -bring on the Ivies !!

I picked UNI...they are our only natural MVC rival with football. You always should play a true rival even if you are the underdog.

Most importantly, if you choose a team we haven't played AT HOME during the PFL era, explain how (as athletic director) you would convince them to play in Des Moines.

As a PFL team, Drake has had home games against Truman, MST, UNI, Morningside, a Patriot League team, and Grand View.
