Not a disappointment. And by the way, Butler was not your normal Butler this year. I've seen plenty of Butler teams and this was no doubt the best one. Far and away. A very good team.

That being said, the Bulldogs did have a chance to win this one. But it wasn't playcalling that did them in, it was personnel. Mainly guys along the front line. Now believe me, these guys tried. And there are some big boys along the front. But I don't know that they were all made to pass protect. More of a running type of offensive line ... but this isn't a running offense. Not schematically and not in skill position. The guys just never gave Piatkowski enough time. Not against Butler and not against the top teams they played.

The good news is that it looks like the o-line's got some big skinny guys that hopefully will turn into big athletic guys along the front. And when that happens, this playbook opens way up.

All that being said, there is a reason this team was picked 6th in the preseason. And there is a reason this team finished tied for third. Good coaching/playing.

By the way, for all you slamming the coaches ... I hope you guys make to at least half of the games. And if not, you better be someone like Lurking Dog ... live a long ways away but follow the team with a passion. If you are none of the above ... then give me a break. Attitudes like that without game attendance will get a very competitive program canned by the school. Make sure you give support before giving criticism. Those guys and the school deserves it.

RE: BEAT BUTLER

I am curious what do the true freshman playing have to do with it. Piatkowski completed 17 of 29 passes for 166 yards against Butler. They won IN SPITE of some of the coaching, NOT BECAUSE of it. Only blue-tinted glasses would give CC the PFL Coach of the year; try Butler's coach (picked 5th and finishing first).
The kids played their hearts out and deserved better.

RE: BEAT BUTLER

Blue Dog, I don't understand the anger. This is a D1 football team. If we had converted just half of the gifts Butler gave us----we would have been PFL champions. If you don't convert at least half of these gifts into 7 points apiece--you allow your opponent to hang around and take another shot at you.
That being said, this team went further, faster than most of the "experts" thought they would have. Experts look at stats and past records, they don't measure heart. No one is taking a shot at the young men playing. I believe they are respectfully suggesting that some different offensive plays may have resulted in some touchdowns and a victory.
All of that considered, it was a fantastic year--congrats to all of the young men who played so hard this year.
RE: BEAT BUTLER

Oh yeah, "one last comment." Remember, this football team is playing the same sport as the Drake footballers of 1900, 1930, and 1960.

Second most pass attempts in a season? I would buy that one.

RE: BEAT BUTLER

One last comment on this subject. Don't be SURPRISED if CC ends up being PFL Coach of the Year.

RE: BEAT BUTLER

Let me get this straight. Second year coach takes the team to an 8-3 record. Redshirt freshman QB throws for over 2,100 yards (second all time at Drake). Lose a close one at against a very good Butler team on the road for a share of the PFL championship. Defense plays lights out all season (even without Asbell). Wubbs and the special teams were tops in the league throughout most of the season and we're 'going after' the program???

Smells like 'entitlement' to me. These guys worked hard for everything they got. They earned it. Start supporting them. I'm calling everyone of you out right now and predicting a PFL Championship next season. Some of you came on here preseason and said you would be surprised if they won 4 or 5 games...well...be SURPRISED!!! I'll reserve a spot for you on the Bulldog Bandwagon this time next year.

RE: BEAT BUTLER

First Drake game of the year - my observations...

Defense was great. They played with pressure and got turnovers to help set the offense. Linebackers played great - line was very good and d-backs defended well and tackled well. Very good job by the defense.

Offense was not very good. They were handed gifts in the first quarter but could not capitalize on them. They could not run and there were at least 8 perhaps 10 dropped passes. Quarterback is young but will be good. But there are no homerun hitters that I saw. Coaching staff should look at their schemes (blocking and pass routes) and start making changes.

RE: BEAT BUTLER

LurkingDog (11/22/2009)
I would like to see the Bulldogs throw downfield more often...maybe even over the middle. But could the quarterback deliver the ball?

I think he could, but we might never know. It seems like Creighton likes nothing but runs and 7-8 yard passes. If he does not have the athletes for "his system" he only needs to look in the mirror. Just count the number of true freshmen (HIS recruits for HIS system) getting significant playing time and see how effective they truly are. If they are successful, great, if not, make the change to some who is. He had the athletes to win this game for these kids who put themselves in a position to win a championship despite the (offensive) coaching. I agree, this is NOT D III FOOTBALL; get an OC who has some creativity; clearly CC has none.

RE: BEAT BUTLER

Two dog night (11/22/2009)
The reason it came down to a FG at the end of the game is due to the lackluster play calling which put an athletically superior team in a tenuous situation late in the game. The defense played (as always) great, x for a busted coverage and a stupid penalty. As the game gets tighter, however, Creighton's calls get more conservative and predictable. Did anyone listen to Butler's broadcast? (4th QTR, 1st down, almost laughing) "No surprise, Cashmore off the right side for no gain." When broadcasters and the ENTIRE STADIUM know what is coming, defense is much simpler.

These last two seasons, I've been pretty disappointed with the offense in general, and especially the playcalling. I know that every coach has their system, and his offense seemed to be pretty potent at Wabash. Maybe the 'dogs just don't have the right personnel for CC's system, and maybe CC needs to adjust his system to this level. I wouldn't mind seeing him bring in an offensive coordinator. Being both the head coach and OC is a lot for one guy to handle.

RE: BEAT BUTLER

The reason it came down to a FG at the end of the game is due to the lackluster play calling which put an athletically superior team in a tenuous situation late in the game. When broadcasters and the ENTIRE STADIUM know what is coming, defense is much simpler.

There are absolutely NO perceptible offensive halftime adjustments; the second half of both of the Dayton and Butler games mirrored the first half. Does Creighton even know how to spell "misdirection"? Our defense gets 4 turnovers and our offense gets only 10 points; the offense only had one sustained drive of their own and SEVEN 3 and out nonscoring possessions against a defense that is clearly less athletic than Dayton's.

This loss is on the coaches (as well as last year's 21-15 loss at Butler); the players played well enough to win; the coaches did not give them the opportunity to finish the job. 8-3 is a remarkable feat for a bunch of kids that overcame so much adversity (remember the 41 suspension nonsense at the beginning of the season); it is too bad Creighton will probably not learn any lessons from all of this.

RE: BEAT BUTLER

Drake finished tied for third in the PFL with Jacksonville.

RE: BEAT BUTLER

Butler wins 20-17, on field goal at the end of the game.

RE: BEAT BUTLER

17-10 Butler in the 4th.

RE: BEAT BUTLER

3-3 at the half.
