I did find a link to all the AP football polls....don't see Drake listed during the 1981 season....maybe they were ranked in a different poll.

Drake did beat Kansas State that year, but not Iowa State (I think that was the next year). I was in school at the time, and I don't remember them being ranked at any time during the season. Maybe Lurking Dog will know for sure.

I remember watching the Tulsa game on TV.....very ugly.

In the early 80's, Pat was a class act at Drake. He played wide receiver, not tight end, on a Drake team that was undefeated and ranked in the top 20 (YES, IT'S TRUE) deep in the season. Beating Ia State and Kansas State, they went down to Tulsa in week nine and got their butts kicked in a nasty storm on a regional ABC game of the week. Nothing went right. Two, maybe three quick fumbles on the turf and they were toast. Also on that team was All-Pro SD Charger center Dennis McKnight.
Drake stadium was packed for every home game.

Pat's first kid is probably named Drake because not only did he go to Drake, but so did his wife, Blanca.

Drake finishes 1981 football season with 10-1 record. The lone loss to Tulsa costs a perfect season and postseason birth (teams shared the Missouri Valley Conference title). The team was tentatively schedule to play in the Aloha Bowl (the Missouri Valley Conference runner-up tie-in), but the bowl failed to receive certification until the 1982 season.[citation needed]

Former Drake standout Pat Dunsmore wins the 1986 Super Bowl Championship as a member of the Chicago Bears.

yes Drake had some pretty good football. My first year was 1972 and I still remember Jerry Heston, Jim O'Connor, Dennis Redmondn and Doug Winslow. (and Jack Shelton)_ I know a few months ago there was video posted from that year- very enjoyable

If memory serves me correctly (this was preseason Bears vs Cards in the '84-'85 ((superbowl)) season)..the Fridge threw Lomax down like a sack of potatoes. I bit of a melee transpired and it all kind of went south from there as the group rumbled onto the sidelines. I can't remember if Pat was trying to break things up or just got caught in the wrong place at the wrong time, but he ended up on the ground and Otis Anderson along with a few other cronies, were beating him and I think even kicking him. It was pitiful beyond belief. I think Pat suffered a concussion and along with some overworked knees (maybe a back issue in there too, I don't know) he was unable to return to duty that year. Always kind of thought Otis Anderson was cool before that incident...

Pat Dunsmore played when I attended Drake. He was a great player and a likeable guy. The team was quite good. They were co-champs of the MVC one year around 1980 or so.

Like Pat, my kid goes to Northwestern. Our family went down to Tampa for the Outback Bowl on New Year's Day to see Northwestern play Auburn. Drake Dunsmore had a fantastic game, including a 66-yard TD. Northwestern broke just about every passing record for the Outback Bowl, but lost the game in OT. Their QB, Kafka, was 47 of 79 for 532 yards. My guess is Drake caught at least 6 passes.

Register Story

There's a Register story about Pat and Drake Dunsmore as Northwestern prepares to play at Iowa. No one will officially confirm that Drake is named after the school, but Drake says "it's kind of hard to deny it." You have to love this quote from Pat:

“Honestly, I never liked Iowa or Iowa State,” Dunsmore said. “I was a Drake Bulldog. We had real good teams when I was there. We always felt a little bit left out.”

I've spoken with Drake before - as you could probably assume, his dad named him Drake after the institution he graduated from.

You are correct. I think it may have been on Monday night football. Somehow Pat got hit and he wasn't even dressed for the game. Someone must remember the facts better than I.

PS. Pat has always been my favorite Bulldog football player.

While watching some of the Northwestern football game yesterday, I picked up on the name
Dunsmore as a NW tight end. My curiosity got the best of me and I discovered that Drake Dunsmore is the son of Pat Dunsmore from Ankeny who played college ball at Drake and got in a couple of seasons with the Chicago Bears. Sort of neat to have a Bulldog offspring carrying on the Drake name.
