The D-linemen confirmed that they don't stunt, strait gap rush. Asbell sometimes through in a spin move, when he's healthy. D-backs said they tried a couple blitz this game. First time in a game, they tried a blitz this year. All of them sounded frustrated.

Playing D-1 ball and then coaching college and HS ball for 5 years following enabled me to be a sorry coach who thought he knew way more than he did. There is no substitute for actually working and learning under quality coaches. Playing experience does not equal COACHING knowledge. It was only after joining a quality staff in FL that I learned how stupid I was.

As an aside, most Pop Warner coaches are very similar to my early years...they think they know way more that they do just because they have been coaching for awhile. We rolled our eyes and shut our mouth when they come our way. As another aside...PW coaches are awesome humans for their volunteerism (word?) and patience!!

When you make a comment that you've been to 4 games and not seen one stunt or blitz...you lose credibility (which is why I asked for your credentials).
Further, I also asked if you were exaggerating about the statement, as that would allow me to breathe easy.

"So let me asum up" (said with Spanish accent)...if you were embellishing the lack of pressure then embellish on, but perhaps without the %100 certainty of a "never"...maybe just a "rarely...not enough of a". If you honestly believe that you were watching ANY college team in America not stunt or blitz for 4 games? Than you are a loon (said politely).

Wanting a defense to be "high risk-high reward" is a great example of an opinion that shoudl be discussed at length on a board such as this. Making innaccurate comments that criticize a program should not.

There was no reference to lack of coaching ability whatsoever. I think they have a fine staff.They may not have the speed or the talent .I was a starting division 1A linebacker for 2 years.Have been coaching youth football for 10 years.Wouldn't know how to use the xbox if I tried.The defense did an okay job with turnovers etc. against lower division teams(Upper Iowa,William Penn)not so good against Lehigh,San Diego,Butler.I stated that if you sit back in a base package without any sort of pressure,the talent of the PFl will pick apart the secondary.Everybody is entitled to their opinions on this board as long as it is done in a polite way.As a fan,it is frustrating to see no pressure on the rival Qbs.Coming up this weekend against Dayton,they can upset them if they put alot of pressure on their 5'9 Qb.If they don't ,he will pick them apart.He has a very good arm,better than Hoyng's but he is not as tall,and not as fast.In conclusion,as a fan,I'd like to see"high risk,high reward" type of defensive play.It is certainly more fun to watch.

You have been to 4 games and you have not seen one stunt (assume you mean from the d-line), nor one blitz? They only sit in their base package?

Would you please submit your football credentials for inspection. Making comments like that...insinuating a lack of coaching ability on the part of the Drake staff is completely acceptable if the source knows what they are talking about (ie. I am not asking a dentist how to change the oil in the car).

There is NO team in the country that doesn't run a stunt or a blitz in each 1/4 of play. None. To go 4 games without one? That is a falsehood. So is your statement mere hyperbole? Or is your football knowledge based on the X-box?

I have seen 4 games and listened to the Butler game.I have not seen a stunt,nor have I seen a blitz from the linebackers,nor have I seen any kind of blitz from the outside.You cannot sit back in a base package and expect to compete in the PFL,inho

I was at the game too and the game was never in doubt. San Diego was in control from the beginning and was clearly the better team. It appears that the Bulldogs will need to improve their level of talent (and avoid injuries) and get buy in to Coach Creighton's system to give San Diego a run for their money in future years.

We were there also. Tough one for us to pick as our first game to attend. Wife commented one game and three ambulances.

Saw a few good individual efforts, buy not much worked except the short out pass. D-backs seemed to give the receivers way too much cushion to catch & run.

Not going back until Morehead State.

McVey was also hurt...don't know how badly.

And regarding an earlier injury, Creighton remarked last night that he thinks Pugh will be back later this season.

I was at the game. Season tickets for 10 years.

Hunt was one of the most heartbreaking things I've seen in sports. He runs to the sideline as a long USD run is about to be called back. He's cradling his arm and just collapses at the sideline and screams 'NOOOOOOO'. With the players on the sideline between me and him it took a few seconds to get the number and guess it was the arm again. There were more than a few fans around me who were dabbing at their eyes as he was splinted and hauled off the field.

Last year players stepped up when Hunt got hurt and we have some depth this year, but it really hurts to see such a great player run into such problems in trying to play the game.

My wife and I were at the game with Mike Piatkowski's parents. Nice day, a hard hitting game. The injuries were costly.

I know the paper mentioned that Hunt could be out for the season.....were there other injuries, too?

Per today's Register, Cale Hunt is out for the season.

I was at the game. I am afraid that the team did not believe they could win. I don't think they know how good they could be. San Diego was good, they were not that good. If Drake kept their heads, they could have been right in this one.

As disappointing as this game was, there were a few rays of hope. After starting the game nearly dead, the offense finally showed up and for the first time this season showed an ability to execute against a decent defense. They sustained drives and moved the ball. They finally were playing with some heart.

Defense was more of a concern. They only forced 1 punt in the first half. Defenders on the wide receivers were playing 7 yards off the line, they played very soft and would regularly give up 6-9 yards on first down giving USD lots of short yardage downs.

Agreed. I think the list includes an experienced offensive line, speed at running back, and a quarterback who can get the ball to open receivers.

Benny had a terrific year last year...

In fact, he led the league in tackles. We may see more of him, depending on the extent of Hunt's injury.

What's amazing, everyone, is that the kids on the team that are from the Chicago area are from the some of the top programs in the state, from the two largest classes (out of eight). Schools like Loyola Catholic, Lake Zurich, Wheaton, Wheaton Warrenville South, Stevenson, Naperville North, Carmel Catholic, Fremd, Homewood-Flossmore, Barrington, New Trier and a few others. People, these are big time programs and these kids were starters on their teams. Having seen some of them play in high school, I know that they are class kids and terrific football players. McB, you may have hit something on the head, because something is definately missing. If a kid like Benny Morrison is not starting, I can only assume it means that the kids who are must be better ball players, and if they are, then I know that they must be pretty good, because Benny had a terrific year last year (I believe he got into the starting line up due to injuries of other players) and I know what kind of player he was in high school, as I have mentioned here, previously. Maybe you're right, McB; they've got to start believing.

Cranford "C.T." Traylor is the most exciting player in Drake football history....

I don't agree with you Husker ... maybe if teams were measured by a belief in their own abilities, I might give USD the edge. Let's hope the men start believeing in themselves as much as the fans do. Look at the stats! Had someone shown me the stats without the score .. I would swear this game was a toss up. The fact is the men beat themselves more than anything else. They need to take a collective look in the mirror and grow up. Time slips away very quickly when your around 20 years old or so .. can't get today back. They need a game face and a game attitude. KILL, MAIM, DESTROY !!!! It's really not a matter of whether they can or can not do it ... it's a matter of them getting the RIGHT attitude and executing what NEEDS to be done. Actually it is pretty simple stuff. They need to get their heads together with the CORRECT game attitude and take this season back with a win at Butler! This team has everything to gain and nothing to lose .. a sense of urgency with a true brotherhood and the will to win .. that is what the men need. They should know that fans really do believe in them but they have to remember that winners find solutions and losers make excuses. No matter what it is in life .. that IS the bottom line.

The game was over after the first play .. an interception thrown right to the San Diego defender.

Drake was simply outmatched by San Diego.

Coach went with Ostermann.

Also, Oliver did not start, in spite of the big game he had against Wm Penn.

McVey, Hunt lost to injuries in the first half.

USD's pass defense isn't as good as it's been the past couple of years. Campbell moved the ball on them through the air.

Ingle needs to have the game of his life to keep Drake in the game. No turnovers.

San Diego comes to town Saturday, and it appears they are the same offensive power. Predictions? Hopes? Forecast? Drake has a good defense, but can they stop San Diego? Can the offense provide some help?
