How does this align Drake with UNI at all?

Yes, they start play in 2008 and have a very nice NAIA schedule and have setup a long term home and home contract with D3 Simpson. I think that is AWESOME! That reminders me of the old rivalry games between MSU-Moorhead/Concordia-Moorhead, St. Johns/St. Cloud State, and Loras/St. Ambrose. I think that will get in the way of GVC ever playing Drake.

GVC also just signed a huge contract with DSM East HS to coop a new all sports facility on the eastside. Great move, great joint effort.

LOL There's lots of attitude when it comes to football...don't know why.

Of course, Penn St. is unlikely to schedule an Ivy because they can't count victories over nonscholarship teams toward the six wins they need for bowl eligibility.

I live in San Francisco and always looked forward to the every other year game at St Mary's. San Diego has real problems hence the Pioneer league match.

I know people at St Mary's and they think the school has lost something with the loss of football. The Alumni to a person believe that.

I would love to see Drake sched more of the Ivy folks but my partner went to Columbia and he sez they will sched Penn State and lose 300 to 0 before they will come to Des Moines.

I share your hopes. However, it takes two to tango. The hangup may be getting those schools to send their teams to Des Moines--after all, they have a lot of playmates on the east coast. Why would they put people on an airplane to play us? For Lehigh, it was a desperate move after another school backed out of an agreement with them. I guess Drake can stumble upon those once in awhile.

I think there's also a difference between an academically strong school and football programs that hold student-athletes to high admission standards. The two aren't necessarily the same thing, and Drake should find opponents that fall into the second category.

Aside from the academic issue, I think attendance at home games would improve if Drake could get more opponents from schools that play D-I basketball. Again, that's a tough one for Drake. The athletic director at South Dakota (now a D-I school) told me they've been trying to schedule Drake for five years. Ask SC about that one, and watch her take evasive maneuvers.

The addition of Lehigh seems like a real plus for the Drake Football schedule. The addition of Upper Iowa and William Penn seems like a step back . There is an obvious geographic advantage in scheduling these games but at what cost ? Will these games be competitive or even remotely interesting ? Both of these teams average less than 700 fans for home games so it is unlikely that this type of scheduling (yawn) will develop any kind of new Metro Des Moines fan base for Drake.
Hopefully future non conference scheduling may include academically strong football programs like William and Mary ,Wagner College ,Columbia and Lafayette .

How does Drake determine its football schedule? I'm sure a number of games are PLF assigned or selected by some type of subdivision, but what about the non-conference games? I've seen reference to payout or payday, and that Drake won't pay, but I'm lost to this concept. Being new to PFL, things are a bit different. Just take me a while to get used to it.

Whether it's called a paycheck or a guarnatee, we're talking about compensation for playing on the road--usually for one game only. "Payday" refers to a really big paycheck...one that covers a significant part of a program's annual budget.

Actually, I think Drake is offering a small guarantee to Upper Iowa...probably to William Penn as well. I expect these will be in the 5k range since they're lower division/NAIA teams and will bus in & out quickly. For the last 10 years, Drake has received paychecks from 30-50k each year to play at a Gateway school. Illinois State in 2007 was the only one of those the Bulldogs won...now Creighton seems to be taking scheduling in a new direction.

Most of the scholarship Football Championship Subdivision (formerly I-AA) teams can get big paydays--$300,000+--by traveling to play a major college program. Under NCAA rules, the FBS/I-A schools need 6 wins to accept a bowl bid, but they can only count wins over certain teams toward those 6 wins. They can include only one win over an FCS/I-AA team...and only if that team gives 90% of the scholarship max. Confused yet? Anyway, that's why Drake won't be offered a big paycheck at Iowa State.

It looks like Creighton is looking for more home-home scheduling (like the series announced with Lehigh). Not everyone is willing to play Drake on even terms, but I like the change in philosophy.

Upper Iowa and Wm. Penn appear to be filler games. Maybe they're looked at as easy wins. Maybe the cost of the guarantees is much lower than this year's share of travel for another home-home would be (Drake is on a tight budget). Only the coach and athletic director know for sure.

The Bulldogs' o-line and running game are getting a major overhaul. The defense must replace the entire secondary. Cale Hunt's arm may not be ready...a number of freshmen made a hasty departure, leaving depth thin...there's a new coaching staff.

Last year must have been rough, but now we enter Year One of the Creighton era. Turnaround may be just a pipedream now, but already a positive, competitive attitude is forming. Several enthusiastic new guys coming on board will just add to the spark. Spring game is just around the corner.

I'm looking forward to be in on the ground floor of what's to come.

This will not be a playoff caliber Lehigh team (5-6 last year). One observer whose football knowledge I respect told me they are "fast and sloppy."

They lost to an average NEC team two years ago. But will Drake even be that good?

ND will be in our first year of transition, and it will be tough for us to come by home games, I believe we are still looking for 3. I'd love to see Drake come to GF, they're a solid program that isn't all that far away. I'd think that UND would be willing to pay a decent guarantee too. From what I've heard, you've already got 6 home games, right?

I agree, USD would be a good game for Drake. Maybe now that they are "transitioning" that will happen.

That's funny. I wouldn't call it "buying" since Drake doesn't pay. Well, maybe the bus ride down and back, but I wouldn't classify this as a pay check game. Don't get me wrong, I don't like this game anymore than you guys do, I guess it's a matter of convinence for the schedulers.

Would or has Drake ever considered Augastana, Sioux Falls, SD or the Unviersity of Mary, Bismarck, ND?

It looks like Drake will attempt to schedule 12 games next year. They're buying an August game with Upper Iowa. I'd guess Waldorf and a scholarship I-AA will be on the schedule too. Platteville won't return until 2009.

And folks, don't think you're going to get too many schools not named UNI to make a return trip to Drake. Indiana State isn't stupid.[/quote]It's because ISU sucks. That's why they won't go on the road to a PFL program. They have a hard enough time recuiting against UI and in state Butler and Valpo. So why go to Iowa to play Drake lose and then have to answer the question about playing Butler or Valpo.

Over the past 4 years, I would say you've seen some pretty good football then. Whatever they're doing (i.e. scheduling) seems to be working.

Know this about scheduling.....FCS teams are now going to scrutinize playing teams like Drake. We helped get Randy Ball fired at SMS. And if it comes to that, Illinois State's coach doesn't have enough chits to overcome losing to Drake. None of the Iowa Conference schools will play Drake.

Leaves you with few choices, doesn't it. I think the Wisconsin D-3 schools are good schools to play. Being there is only 1 scholarship football program in Wisconsin, there's some pretty good talent playing non-scholarship football there. Their facilities, for the most part, are top notch. And it doesn't cost much to play them.

I agree with the poster who said the list of I-AAs willing to visit DSM is short. Getting better is one thing, playing 3-4 paycheck games on the road is another.
