I was a freshman on that team in 1979. I was a scholarship player and as you know freshmen didn't play much then.That was the Chuck Shelton era.Man Drake recuited from all over the country. We even had a kicker from Hawaii.

But Dwayne Ball was the number one runningback then. But don't get me wrong Talmage Tanks was on his heels. But did you guys know that he was about 26 when I was there at age 18. He had spent time in the military and played some pro baseball as well.

Yes Frank Busko, Pat Dunsmore, Dennis Mcknight, Felix Wright, were awesome. but you guy must also remember Lance sheilds also played pro ball. I mean Drake put a gang of player into the show, and some that just missed including myself.

But I hate to change the subject matter.But I was surfing the net looking for my old fraternity brothers from Drake. The men of Omega Psi Phi Inc., and came across something that totally stopped me in my tracks. Well searching for my line brother Amero Ware the great. Brentwood Legend Passes!!! This was a total shock to me. The last I knew was that him and his wife Janice was living in Chicago not far from the south suburb where I live.

We stayed in touch with each other and grew even closer.i'm sorry for side tracking, but I guess after 30 years we all have lost friends. Some we knew of their passing and others we didn't.

This is a awesome forum, brings back great memories. So tonight lets call that old college friend and just say; what's up man. Because tomorrow isn't promised to any of us.

I transfered to N.I.U. and in 1983 we won the MAC conference and went on to play Long Beach state in the California Bowl.My father also played for Drake in 1947 with Johnny Brite.Always been a Drake fan and always will.

Aw hell yeah we were all running around screaming!! We were all on our hands and knees in herriot praying on that last drive! When the radio announcer called out the formation we all in the room knew where the ball was going and Augustine made a big play and we won! Now all we have to do is stay hungry and win the rest of our games BIG, and we SHOULD be in the playoffs or close!

John Ware, Wederquist, Dennis McKnight, Rafael Soto, etc was a helluva offensive line. McKnight played 10+ years in the NFL.

The black glove guys were impressive...for their era, better than the current O-line. But don't forget the current Bulldogs (notably Pammer) have a hand in setting rushing records four straight years.

Pat Dunsmore.....his son plays for Northwestern now.....kid's first name is Drake.

I remember they called Drake's quarterbacks the Polish Air Force.....Yagelski, Gronowski and Ostrowski.

Wish I could have been at the game last night.....it sure sounded good on the radio!

True confession.....I wasn't going to listen to the game....I was afraid it could be ugly.....I turned on the radio at about 7:30 to listen to the Cubs game....the station that carries the Cubs in Des Moines had the Drake game on instead......it was halftime, and since it was close, I decided to listen unless Drake got down big. What an ending....and the Cubs won too

This is only second hand hearsay but my understanding is that Paul Morrison called it the biggest win in the non-scholarship era. That is why the SID department said the same thing.

Now - For the game analysis from someone who was there (good thing I am writing and not talking this morning)...

Offense - Started slow. Got some yardage but just enough to move the chains once or twice and keep ISU from winning the field position battle. Got more confidence as the game wore on. Great half time adjustments (score one for Loney) that really made the difference. Second half essentially EVERYONE stepped up and made some huge plays (one over the sholder turn the body around catch for a first down was an AMAZING catch. Both offensive touchdowns were great individual efforts by Marx and Ageyi) A minute and 28 and 95 yards from a winning score? No problem. No one was rattled and just made plays.

Defense - Awsome all game long. Two things that need to be fixed is the running back was all over the place and the middle was open for the pass... BUT when they got down near the end zone, the boys stiffened and held their ground. Also got more confidence as the game went on. Jacob Craig laid some WOOD that cause the middle to get closed toward the end of the third quarter and the fourth..Great job Matt Jeter and the whole defense.

Kicking game - WOW. WAS THAT AN IMPROVEMENT OVER LAST YEAR... Two touchbacks is great since the kickoffs are now from the 30 yard line. That was key. The Punter was fantastic and really put ISU in a hole field position wise. This was the biggest improvement I saw from last year.

Adjustments: Now I see what a great coaching staff can do. 0 points in the first half, 27 points in the second half. Enough said.

I think you're talking about Frank Butzko (sp?), Gary Yagelski and all those guys. I remember Talmadge Tanks, but Amero Ware was the star back on the 10-1 team of 1981. John Ware, Wederquist, Dennis McKnight, Rafael Soto, etc was a helluva offensive line. McKnight played 10+ years in the NFL.

My b oyz handle their business! No one in our locker room doubted us winning! we knew it would be hard and we would have to execute! All week the coaching staff preached technique, and those fundamentals helped us win! Coach Loney has given us so much confidence as a team, and it is starting to show! He's a great teacher, motivator, and person!

MH.....did the guys who didn't make the trip all get a chance to listen to the game together. I bet you guys were going crazy. Hell, I was going crazy.

This is the buggiest board I've ever seen. I've changed my handle again because of sign on problems.

I had similar problems on this board previously.....2 suggestions:

1. Use Mozilla instead of Internet Explorer.

2. If you are using IE, clear the cookies.

Those both worked for me when I had problems logging in

Come on Lurkage! .. I was looking for something a lot more upbeat than that! Just because you live so far away that you can't stalk the football players like DUBulldog does the basketball players .... geeeeezzzz.

I would say that this is the biggest win in a long arsh time but I don't want it to go to the player's head. If they can play this well in their first game then I'd think they should be able to achieve some great goals. One game doesn't make a season. But at the same time .. why not celebrate the success so far? .. LOVE IT !!!

As the SID would say, "this is the biggest win of Drake's non-scholarship era." But why are we still making that distinction? For the most part, Drake football stunk from the time Johnny Bright left until Rob Ash became coach.

The 1973-77 teams won a combined 11 games (including two losses to Dayton, BTW). Even the teams I saw in the early 80s--considered by some as Drake's best ever--didn't stand out to me as significantly better than today's Bulldogs. Size and speed have changed the game in last 25 years...Craig Wederquist, for example, was only 6-3, 250 pounds. Phaydavong could run circles around most of Drake's scholarship backs. So why do they have separate records for scholarship and nonscholarship?

Now that I'm done with my rant, here are my nominees for best wins, in no particular order.

--Mississippi State, 1922...capped 7-0 season.

--Fresno State, 1946 (Raisin Bowl)

--Arizona, 1949 (Salad Bowl)

--Colorado, 1979...beat a bad team, but a big name.

--Iowa State, 1985...only significant because it was last game against the 'Clones.

If I had a top-100, I wouldn't put the Illinois State win on the list.

The radio crew called it by far the biggest win of the non-scholarship era. I don't know about that, but I'll go with it. It's great to live in the moment. The win over USF was huge, in front of what had to be the biggest crowd non-scholarship Drake has seen by at least double, but I'm guessing ISU is (supposed to be) a better team than USF was that year.

Wow...great win for the football squad. Wish I coulda made it down I-55, but thursday night games just ain't easy. Bet it's a nice ride home tonight.

Regardless, beating an MVC/Gateway foe is big-time! Especially the crew from Ab-Normal.

What happened? .. I couldn't listen tonight.

Drake trailed 10-0 at halftime.....fought and scratched their way to a 20-17 lead with about 5 minutes left in the game. Illinois St came down and scored a TD with about 1:30 left in the game. Drake had a penalty on the kickoff, and started from their own 10 yard line. After an illegal procedure penalty, Drake faced a 3rd and 15 from their own 5 and about a minute left in the game.....completed a pass for a first down, then another first down....then a 56 yard TD pass to Augie Agyei on a ball that was tipped.

ISU drove downfield in about 2 plays, but Drake knocked down the Hail Mary pass on the last play.
