Drake Dunsmore

While watching some of the Northwestern football game yesterday, I picked up on the name
Dunsmore as a NW tight end. My curiosity got the best of me and I discovered that Drake Dunsmore is the son of Pat Dunsmore from Ankeny who played college ball at Drake and got in a couple of seasons with the Chicago Bears. Sort of neat to have a Bulldog offspring carrying on the Drake name.

An interesting article in the Chicago Tribune about the future relationship between the Ivy League and Patriot League since the Patriot League will now offer scholarships. Could this lead to more Ivy-PFL non-conference games? Could it lead to a postseason alliance between the Ivy-PFL? I hope so, but the one mention of the PFL in the article was a bit cautious due to travel costs.

As much as I like the bowls, I am warming up to the playoff idea. This article suggests 32 teams. I would suggest 40 teams. All Division I conferences would get one bid and there would be 14 at large bids.

Vince Israel and Zach Bosch, a pair of Drake University juniors who play on the football team, stood across the street from Sheslow Auditorium Saturday night and enjoyed seeing their school get ready to spend two hours in the national focus as host of the ABC News/Des Moines Register Republican presidential debate.

Drake went 10-1 during its last year of I-A classification. That was 1981, when 32 teams went to bowls. Drake did not receive a bid.

This year, 70 teams will play in bowls! And Drake can't even get invited to the B division playoffs.

At #55 in FCS, Drake is currently Sagarin's top PFL team. Will it get the Bulldogs into the FCS playoffs? No.

Drake is rated #171 in Division I. I'd love to see them play #170 Tulane. The Turbodog tastes better down there.

Under the coaches' radar in the FCS poll, Drake will almost certainly be left out of the Top-25. Drake had 4 points last week, but will need about 60 for a ranking.

With a win over Drake, Jacksonville probably would have been on its way to a second consecutive ranking in the final poll. Reputation is a strange thing.

We have struggled in the Dayton game over the years, so I am hoping for a fast start. Dayton's record can be deceiving as their losses have all come to good teams. Plus they are a big rival. Anything can happen in this game.

Trivia time. Which of the following goals/descriptions is associated with The Second Mile, an organization made famous by former Penn State assistant coach Jerry Sandusky?

A. "...empowerment of youth in all areas... We support greater economic, political and social opportunities for young people."

B. "...non-profit organization for children who need additional support and who would benefit from positive human contact."

C. "...to serve those who are far less fortunate than we are and to hopefully make a positive difference."

Sandusky was a respected coach who did a lot for the community's youth. Maybe too much. Penn State provided facilities for his community service activities.

I get nervous when a coach--especially with the university's support--focuses on things other than coaching. Even if it seems to be for the betterment of humanity, the product on the field usually suffers--and one never knows the coach's true motives.

I feel sorry for Sandusky's two sons.

As for JoPa, it's time for him to retire.

Moorehead PFL co-defensive player of the week

DES MOINES, Iowa--Drake linebacker Tyler Moorehead has been recognized by the Pioneer Football League for his role in Drake's 23-13 win at Marist Saturday by being named the PFL's co-Defensive Player of the Week. It is Moorehead's first Player of the Week honor and the fifth for Drake this season.

Moorehead sacked Marist quarterback Tommy Reilly three times among his 4.5 tackles for loss yesterday, and on one forced a fumble that was recovered by defensive end Brandon Coleman. The Bulldogs held the Red Foxes to 34 rushing yards and 221 total yards, and intercepted three passes.

"It's definitely a great honor to receive this award from the PFL," Moorehead said. "It's not something I could do without the whole team playing great, so it's a testament to my teammates too. The defense was really on top of its game, and the offense played well too. The conditions were a little hectic (with the snow), but overall we played great as a team."

Drake's leading tackler this season with 66, Moorehead is the heartbeat of a Bulldogs defense that ranks No. 1 in the PFL in rushing yards allowed and tackles for loss.
