Whom Would You Schedule For A Home Game?

Most importantly, if you choose a team we haven't played AT HOME during the PFL era, explain how (as athletic director) you would convince them to play in Des Moines.

As a PFL team, Drake has had home games against Truman, MST, UNI, Morningside, a Patriot League team, and Grand View.

Why aren't students attending games?

These are my choices, based on observation and, of course, personal bias. (discuss)

Offense

QB Ira Vandever (2002)—set many passing records; scrambling ability countered quick pass rushers.

RB Scott Phaydavong (2007)—best numbers of any DU running back, ever.

RB Jonathan Taylor (2003)—set single-season school rushing record the year before Scotty P. arrived.

OL Sean Coughlin (2000)—multiple year All-PFL first team; went on to coach Grant Knowles and other Bulldog linemen in ’93. Now he’s an assistant coach at Missouri State.

OL Grant Knowles (2004)—Road Paver of the Stars. Where is he now?

OL Matt Haas (2006)—I remember someone saying he was kinda light. Then he went on to be first-team All-PFL.

OL Dave Pammer (2007)—Played every position on the line and played them well.

OL Mark Wilke (2005)—Three time All-PFL.

TE Dan Marx (2007)—the two guys who preceded him (Seaman, Mickley) got more press. Marx was bigger & badder.

WR Aaron Overton (2002)--Vandever's deep threat receiver also returned kicks. Got a quick look from the NFL Titans.

WR Jason Jones (2005)—Once in Overton’s shadow; might have been better than Overton by the time he left.

Defense

DL Mike Foster (2000)—Pass rushing technique made him hard to block.

DL Kevin Jennings (2006)—Possibly the most athletic BIG guy at Drake during the Rob Ash years. (Shawn Rodgers was not a big guy.)

DL Chris Daniels (2005)—Always fought like a Bulldog for victory. Not as good a wrestler as he thought he was…

DL Andrew Asbell (2008)—Fought the law, and the law won. I hope he comes back next fall.

LB Frank Seamer (2001)—If I were a total homer, I’d pick fellow Kansas Citian Jimmy Adams. But Seamer was a remarkable athlete—probably the fastest linebacker I’ve seen at Drake in the last 30 years.

LB Ben Morrison (2009)—Led the league in tackles his first season in the lineup. Pretty much guaranteed to be in the highlight film.

LB Cale Hunt (2009)—First team all-league, and he was better before he messed up his arm.

DB Cederic Stanley (2001)—Good coverage guy.

DB Desmond Carr (2002)—If he hadn’t done anything else, I would consider him solely for his performance in the 2001 Dayton game. He almost pulled that one out for DU singlehandedly.

DB Andy Green (2008)—The word “playmaker” comes to mind.

DB Jacob Craig (2007)—He liked to run into people really, really hard.

Kickers

PK Billy Cundiff (2001)—holds records with Drake, the Dallas Cowboys, and the Baltimore Ravens.

P Ryan Horvath (2005)—Based on consistency, I give him the nod over Brandon Wubs.

I would guess Drake is playing at Missouri S&T next fall. Lehigh is supposed to visit in September.

And there has been discussion of a UNI game in 2011.

Can anyone fill in details on the Bulldogs' future schedules? Where will the 2011 UNI game be played?

With Northeastern and Hofstra dropping football, it looks like CAA teams suddenly have open dates.

PFL applies for an automatic NCAA playoff bid

This was reported on the Jacksonville University athletics site.

I wouldn't expect a bid until such time as the playoff field increases from this year's 20 teams...to 24. And maybe that will happen by 2012 or so.

This is a significant announcement, because the PFL had previously chosen not to be considered for an automatic bid.

Commissioner Patty Viverito (also commissioner of the MVC Football League) had been so adamant about not applying for a bid...I wonder if this signals that she is on her way out with the PFL.

While watching some of the Northwestern football game yesterday, I picked up on the name
Dunsmore as a NW tight end. My curiosity got the best of me and I discovered that Drake Dunsmore is the son of Pat Dunsmore from Ankeny who played college ball at Drake and got in a couple of seasons with the Chicago Bears. Sort of neat to have a Bulldog offspring carrying on the Drake name.

I think a basketball ticket gets you into both games, although making the kickoff might require leaving the Knapp Center a little early.

According to the PFL Website; here are possible scenarios heading into the final week. We can take a share of the league title if we win. Let's win this one.

Butler is the only team controlling its own fate entering the regular-season's final week. Both Dayton and Drake must win and receive help to clinch a berth in the Dec. 6th Gridiron Classic.

After Week 11's action, there cannot be a three-way tie atop the PFL standings if all Week 12 contests are played. The following are the scenarios for the regular season's final week:

If Drake def. Butler AND Dayton def. Marist…
Drake and Dayton tied at 7-1… Dayton won regular-season meeting against Drake, 23-6… Dayton earns Gridiron Classic bid

If Marist def. Dayton… Winner of Drake-Butler contest earns Gridiron Classic bid.

Since we are not going to lose---I am not going to post the other scenario.

2004 PFL Championship 5yr Reunion

The 2004 PFL championship team is having a 5yr reunion next weekend at the Dayton game. It was close to 5 years ago when we went into Dayton and won on a last play goal line stand and then went on to beat Morehead state for the championship. Every one is pumped up, because this years Dayton game could determine the PFL champion. From the replies we have received so far, there could be 30 - 40 players coming back. The tailgating will start at 10am in the Dave's Barber Shop Parking Lot. If anyone wants to come say hi please do!

You will soon see and learn just how terrific Coach Creighton is. I am a Drake Alum 76'. My son has played the last three yaers for Coach Creighton at Wabash so I am well acquainted with him. You have truly a very special Man in your midst.

I will be following Drake football quite closely now. I did not know I could get it on the radio? Where? I did watch the Play by play on the computer. I will not make any games this year as I will be traveling to all the Wabash games....but next year I will be there for some live games.

I'm watching Drake's Oct 31 opponent, Jacksonville, playing in San Diego. JU is winning big.

Part of it is that the Toreros quarterback has played hurt and has looked awful. Part is that Jacksonville is better.

I think JU has improved the last couple of weeks. They have considerable speed and a QB who can run when he sees an opening.

Drake has to have a running game against JU. In other words, they need Cashmore back.
